    It was late in the evening by the time Ilya finally opened his eyes again. Shane was sitting in the chair across the living room from him, flipping through the newest issue of The Hockey News. He saw Ilya stirring and set it down on the table next to him.

    “Hey sleepyhead,” he said quietly. “You feel better?”

    Ilya rubbed the sleep from his eyes and blinked several times trying to get Shane’s features to come into sharp focus. The blur didn’t quite resolve. This had been his usual the last couple months. The headaches, sleeping too much because of the headaches, the constant fuzziness in his vision that didn’t get better with sleep. He completely missed Shane at the airport yesterday. Didn’t even recognize it was him standing there until Shane touched his arm and scared him half to death. He had a feeling he knew what this meant, but he wasn’t ready to deal with it yet. And he definitely wasn’t going to say anything to Shane about it. He’d be on the phone with his own optometrist the next morning, making that appointment for him that he'd been dragging his feet on.

    Shane realizes through a series of events that Ilya needs glasses but he's being a little stubborn about it.

    Ilya and Shane marry after Rookie season

    Due to Shane being a little more aware of himself thanks to Yuna, over-prepared mamma bear, explaining all types of sex/attraction to him from a young age (“He needs to be prepared for anything! I am not pigeonholing my son!”), Shane knows he’s crushing on, if not falling for, Ilya.

    The butterfly effect occurs; this has only one outcome really. It’s a small thing. Tiny. When Ilya is not there for Shane’s Rookie of the Year award after-party, Shane is worried, needing to track down the other man, instead of slightly annoyed/upset that he would be without Yuna’s lessons.

    This in turn leads him to not doing shots with Scott Hunter.

    Which means only one thing: other than the whole ‘definitely being aware of falling for your rival’ tiny thing. It shouldn’t change much.

    He is not drunk on that balcony with Ilya.

    The Russian pet name set a firework off inside Shane's mind as he heard it cooed from behind him. The intonation was just as he remembered, but the voice was much deeper.

    He turned and felt himself short circuit. It took every ounce of willpower to not let his jaw drop cartoonishly to the floor. Shane would recognize his individual features anywhere, even after 5 years. But it was as if someone had snapped their fingers and the smug, silly Russian boy who had been attached to Shane's hip for 3 summers was transformed into some sort of fucking Adonis right before his eyes.

    “Ilya-” was all Shane managed before strong arms were wrapped around his waist and lifting him off the ground in a greeting all too familiar from years ago.
