“Is that Maria?” Ellie asks incredulously from the kitchen, having seen their unexpected guest through the window even as Joel goes to open the door for his sister-in-law.
Even before she opens her mouth, he knows the news is bad; her face is paler than he’s ever seen it, her jaw tight as she deliberately doesn’t meet his eyes.
