Summary
It feels like being turned inside out, like every cell in her body is being torn apart and put back together wrong. The warehouse disappears into a blur of color and sound and then she's there, directly between Mira and the demon, close enough to see the surprise in Mira's eyes.
The demon's swing catches Rumi square in the ribs. She feels the impact, feels something crack deep inside, multiple somethings, bones splintering like dry wood, and then she's flying.

Or: Rumi would die a thousand times to keep her girls safe, and that's exactly what terrifies Mira most.

Rumi is trying. Trying to learn how to be comfortable in her skin. Trying to learn how to lean on her friends. Trying to put all those feelings of worthlessness and self-loathing behind her. But it’s not quite as simple as she’d first hoped.
When you’re born a mistake and told your entire life that your very existence is wrong, how do you turn away from that belief? How do you learn to love the marks that make you so different from the people you love the most?

Mira and Zoey love their friend, and they see her trying and they want to help. But old habits die hard, and they’ll need to relearn Rumi’s past as well as their own to coax their friend out of the hardened shell she constructed around herself after years of emotional neglect and learned self-hatred.
But if each girl can reach out a hand in their own way maybe they can create a path toward a new light and a new love together.
