Usually, the ocean brought Percy a sense of comfort. But today, as he stared at the shimmering waves from the inside of Rachel’s red convertible, he felt a sense of unease. He was filled with conflicting thoughts. For one, he was scared about the upcoming war. It was looming over everything he did, like a nasty reminder telling him, “Hey, you might be dead in a few weeks! Have fun!” He thought about his friends at camp, and felt a pang of regret. He wanted to be at camp with his friends, with Annabeth. Where to begin with Annabeth? He cringed remembering how things went in the labyrinth, how she had kissed him and how she had to deal with the grief of losing him, only to find out he was on a random goddess’s island.

For years Annabeth Chase had always just been someone Percy Jackson noticed in the high school hallways. Someone he had only spoken to a handful of times. Someone who always existed just outside of his life. Someone noticeable. Someone who would never, ever notice him. Never even talk to him unless it was absolutely necessary to do so. No way. Couldn't happen. Right?

Or, alternatively, to set the stage, Percy is entering his junior year of high school and the very girl he only ever really saw from a distance, Annabeth, is suddenly not so distant. She's sat in the seat right in front of him in his first period class.
