Summary
Rose volunteers for a nonprofit that rescues sex-trafficked omegas, and Shane thinks it's a great cause. He even attends their fundraising galas.
Then, one night, Rose calls to ask for a favor: She wants Shane to let a recently-rescued male omega live with him. In his apartment.
His name is Ilya, Rose explains, and the thing is, despite omega hormone levels, he acts and smells just like an alpha. He can't keep staying in an omega group home because he's scaring the other omegas and endangering the staff.
But he could live with Shane, Rose insists. "You're a big strong alpha hockey player, so he can't intimidate you physically. But also he needs to feel safe, which he can with you, because you're not like other alphas." She pauses. "You know?"
By which she means Shane has never had a full rut, his scent glands barely work, he can't form a knot, and he has no interest in sticking his dick in anyone. Which, whatever. It's fine.
But if being a failure as an alpha means he can help this omega, Ilya, who's apparently as much of a biological anomaly as Shane is…
Shane says yes.
And maybe it's a stupid decision. But he knows that it's also the right one.

“When you’re feeling well enough, I’m going to let you fuck me. Got it?”
Lestat moans again. “You- you,” he drops his voice, and it resonates deep in his chest, a little wetness in the sound (which makes Louis concerned), “You- k-keep t-t- toying with me.”
Louis takes care of Lestat when the wolfkilling is done; nursing him back to health. (both of them are human, and Lestat is very in awe of Louis)

The Russian pet name set a firework off inside Shane's mind as he heard it cooed from behind him. The intonation was just as he remembered, but the voice was much deeper.He turned and felt himself short circuit. It took every ounce of willpower to not let his jaw drop cartoonishly to the floor. Only Rozanov's hand on his wrist stopped him from crashing into the people behind him. Rozanov's hand was warm on Shane's cheek, fingers softly tracing the lines of his cheekbones. Shane swallowed, the motion difficult - all the saliva had seemingly vacated his mouth. He felt himself blushing furiously.

Shane gets signed to the Boston Bears. Everything's great, except for one of his teammates - an annoying, stuck-up Russian man with a huge ego and habit for irritating the hell out of Shane. Ilya was waiting patiently, or rather impatiently, knowing that this would be a chance he could steal away a moment with him.
Except Shane didn't show up. He freaked out again and he didn't text Ilya until last second. A year and a half passed and now Shane is dating Kelsey Langman, a basketball player. He meets Ilya at the club again and shit is stirred up.

The locks on Ilya’s car clicked, and he waited for Shane to look up at him. “Get in,” he ground out between clenched teeth.
Shane was hardwired to follow Ilya’s every command. It was coded into his genetics, he thought, because the deep pull in the pit of his stomach to follow the accented order couldn’t be normal. He hated that part of him that was so willing, so ready to submit. Maybe it could be explained away by some sort of psychological terminology he was unfamiliar with, a desire to relinquish control, to relax and let someone else take the wheel for once in his rigid life.
And maybe it was just Ilya.
In Episode 4, Shane leaves the nightclub with Rose. In the book, he leaves alone.

He's made quite the life for himself at the 118 with people he loves and not a care in the world (at least, as far as anybody can tell) about his past before the 118. His past that he has historically been a bit vague about. When a blast from the past appears on a call, he is realizing that he might not have gotten away so scott-free from his past occupation. Cue Eddie noticing. Now, Buck has to navigate the collision between his past and his present.
