‘You could come out,’ Shane said eagerly.
‘What?’
‘Come out, you know, tell everyone that you’re in a relationship with a man. Then you wouldn’t be able to go back to Russia, and your family would leave you alone.’ It was perfect.
But Rozanov was shaking his head. ‘Risk is too big,’ he said. ‘Without Raiders contract, my visa will change, maybe I do not even get to stay in America. If I burn bridges with Russia, could be very bad.’
‘Oh.’ Shane thought for a minute. ‘What about Canadian residency? Then you’d get healthcare and be able to play for any of the leagues, or do something else entirely if you need to.’
Rozanov looked confused. ‘I would have to play for Canadian team, maybe, to get Canadian citizenship, live in Canada, I don’t know how many years would take. Would be dream only.’
Shane was terrified and excited at the same time as the rest of the idea fell into place in his mind. ‘What if we got married?’ he asked, stomach fluttering. ‘You’d get a Canadian passport, you’d be safe, no matter what happens.’

Summary
It's 2014. Hayden loves his life. He's got a wonderful wife, two twin girls, and the job of his dreams - one where he spends his free time playing hockey and hanging out with his best friend in the world. But when he hears Shane getting himself off in the bed next to him late one night, his brain (and his dick) are suddenly far more interested in the proceedings than he thought. And when Shane catches him getting off too, they suddenly have a lot more to discuss.
This is an AU, a sort of 'what if Shane and Hayden also had each other' perspective. Eventual poly-fic, most major plot points stay the same, up until 2017 or so. Then it's up to Shane, Ilya, Hayden, and Jackie to figure out how they move forward when their lives are far more tangled up than they thought they were.

“Hollander. I do not reply to your boring texts. I tell you to go away. Not because I am asshole…”
The next words get caught in Ilya’s throat, he feels heat rising in his face as tears prick at the corners of his eyes.
“Because this is Russia. Because I never forgive myself if something happened to me… if something happened to you. If..” Ilya sniffs, clearing his throat in a vain attempt to regain what little composure he has left, unravelling in the mens bathroom of the departure gates of Sochi airport. The acrid smell of piss and toilet cleaner and stale cigarette smoke lingers in the air. This is not the place to be having this conversation. Not this room, this airport, not this fucking country.
‘If what?” Shane asks. His voice trembling, barely above a whisper.
Ilya opens his eyes. Fuck it, he thinks. If this is how it crashes and burns, if this is how it ends, not with a bang, but with a whimper, in a disgusting, reeking, mens’ bathroom in Russia. So god damn be it.
“If I lost you.”

Summary
Shane Hollander has the highest hockey IQ in the NHL...and actively pretends he doesn't. He's already set himself apart in many ways, and he doesn't need "absolute hockey nerd" added to the list.
Keeping this secret gets harder as he stops hiding other parts of himself from those around him. He comes out to the Voyageurs (who don't take it very well), he starts hanging out with the Raiders (though no one has a clue about him and Ilya being anything beyond friends), and he feels as if he is losing parts of himself in the expectations others hold for him.
Ilya notices, and resolves to create a space that his boyfriend can thrive in, even if that means getting him the fuck out of Montreal.
Set during The Long Game, where Shane and Ilya have made their plan, Shane's parents know about their relationship, and they've started telling people they are friends, but before Ilya officially transfers to Ottawa. That's right folks, this is a "Boston steals Shane Hollander" fic. We need more, and I am here to contribute☺️🫰
