Summary
Five months after Shroud’s defeat, Robert Robertson hesitates becoming Mecha Man again. But when a chance encounter with his new neighbor begins to change his life in unexpected ways, a dangerous new threat emerges, forcing Robert and the Z-Team back into action. “Shit, shit--” Your voice sounds tinny to your ears, choked up with dust and magic and maybe blood. You’ll worry about any injuries later, after you survive the impact surely coming in the next few seconds. How high up did you fly before the spell went off? You hope it was high enough to give you time; you pray it was low enough that you survive the fall. You work every bit of artificer trickery and magic that you can think of. You need to activate the Pulse again, to connect back with the suit. Are you above the forest? The cliffs? Or will you fall into the dark and roiling sea and sink? What will kill you first, Mecha Knight?

The Mecha Knight has fallen in battle. The Astral Pulse is lost. Rescued from the wreckage by Sir Blazer, the Sun Knight, Robert embarks on a long and difficult journey to recover it. She will not let him go alone.

Summary
He used to imagine what it’d be like to die in the suit. Alerts would sound and reverberate in his skull. He can't decide whether it'd be cold and cruel, or maybe it'd be warm if he gave in to it. Robert's not like that, though; he fights even when he shouldn't.
“And what do you feel when you imagine that, dying in the suit like your father did?” A voice filters slowly through the space like the faint stream of incense wafting up into the air. Robert watches it fizzle out to nothing, silently praying it’ll accidentally set off the fire alarms.
“Like I’m dying,” he says, flat and dry to match the deadpan stare he gives her.
Unsurprisingly, SDN’s mental health services are well-intended but ultimately useless.

“This’ll be interesting. I haven’t really…” he rubs at the back of his neck self-consciously. “I mean, this was always a holiday I’d just stay in with Beef and drink ‘til I blacked out.” He adds in a distracted murmur, “This and most other holidays, I guess…”
Mandy gives him a look — the one she’s gradually perfected for those moments where Robert says something deeply alarming or depressing about his past and doesn’t quite seem to realize it — and he smiles apologetically and continues, “Yeah, this’ll be fun, I think. Just… might be a little glued to your side at first.”
SDN's sponsoring a high-profile New Year's Eve gala, and both Mecha Man and Blonde Blazer are expected to attend. Turns out Robert's not great with crowds — or fireworks.

In the months following the Red Ring's defeat, Robert has maintained a sterling reputation as dispatcher and rehabilitator of the once-maligned Z-Team. But in the aftermath of one especially intense call, his insistent attempts to rationalize a failure bring him to the verge of self-destruction.
