    For all of Phainon’s eagerness, Mydei can feel Phainon’s mind drifting, the same way it does when he’s distracted during a spar--errant thoughts of god-knows-what displacing him and tugging his tension taut like puppet strings, making doubt and hesitation bleed into his motions, loud as anything. Phainon is too wary of indulgence, too averse to his own desires, too indoctrinated by circumstance to have want of anything for himself.

    Mydei knows this, of course, because he is the same.

    After getting together, Mydei realizes there is a non-zero chance Phainon doesn’t know what sex is.
