“When’s the last time someone else stitched you up?” Bucky asked. He was still speaking in that breathy, low tone, like he was afraid something might shatter if he raised his voice.
“I don’t know,” admitted Sam. “Years, probably.”
His answer seemed to physically wound Bucky. For a moment, Sam was worried he might cry. Instead, he just lifted his left hand; touched a single finger to the side of the wound. Sam shivered from the cold touch of the metal.
“Is there anything else I can do?” Bucky said, watching the way Sam’s ribcage rose and fell with each breath. The question, for some reason, made Sam want to slam his head against a wall. He’d heard it often, but in all the wrong places. Never when he needed it. And never like this.

Sam and Bucky have this thing between them, and it keeps getting stronger, and something is bound to break. If only either of them could bring themselves to acknowledge it.

Bucky opened his eyes again, and they were soft and sincere and a little awe-filled. “You catch me when I fall.”
“Always,” Sam promised.*
Torres wakes Sam up in the middle of the night to hand over a drugged-up Bucky. Who is soft, and sleepy, and saying things that he probably wouldn't say if he were sober.

There are a dozen reasons to be scared of going after what he wants, but there are also a dozen reasons to go after what he wants, not the least of which is that Sam, hopefully, really wants him too.
“What if I don’t want to be alone tonight?”
“You won’t be. I’ll be here.”
“But I don’t want to sleep alone.” It’s flirtatious, but there’s a sorrow underlying the words as well, the kind that stirs up memories in Bucky.
It’s been a long time since Bucky felt equipped to take on another person’s burdens, the kind that can’t be easily fixed. And hell, it’s not as if they haven’t shared a bed before. Tonight just might involve a certain closeness, and if Bucky is being honest with himself, he’s missed the way Sam used to sling an arm around him, used to touch his shoulder or rub a reassuring hand over his back or neck.
