Summary
At 13 when the tests show that Yuuji’s a Filament, he believes everything the Sorcerer in the old-fashioned clothes who smells of incense and mosquito coils tells him. That it’s an honour, a privilege. That his life will be dedicated to the greatest purpose possible: bringing light to one born into darkness.
At 18, he’s perceptive enough to know that being a Filament isn’t an honour, it’s to be a paid captive. That the state will require him to serve as someone’s guide dog for the rest of his life whether he likes it or not, because he happens to have the rare gift of being able to share his sight.

His eyes are a colour Yuuji’s never seen before, like the blue sky shot through with diamonds, like stars in the daytime. “Oh,” says Yuuji, breath catching.
