When he’s three years old, Shaggy’s mother holds his wrist to the oven as he cries and writhes and screams. There are four hearts there, only the third one filled in, and Shaggy watches as his skin morphs and falls apart, melting over the ink. It’s not the first time she burns him, and it’s not the last, and the skin stitches itself back together in a collection of ugly, raised scars. But Shaggy can’t remember just quite what it looks like, so he draws what he can remember on a little green sticky note and he folds it up real small, keeping it in his pocket everywhere he goes.
