Summary
Damian is a physician returning to America after years of working overseas. He has spent his life traveling from place to place, providing medical care wherever it was needed, never staying longer than necessary. He was content with that life, even if he sometimes wondered what it would be like to have a place to call home—something that had always felt out of reach and long accepted as such.
Now working in a hospital in New York due to a shortage of doctors, he finds himself closer to his past than he has been in years. Being back in the same country as his family and in a city like New York brings old memories to the surface. He wonders, briefly, if they will ever meet again.
Most likely not.
His family never cared for him to begin with.
And that was fine… He would continue to cherish them from a distance, even if it was never reciprocated. As long as they were healthy and happy. There was nothing more he could ask for.
So, what if he was suddenly needed in Gotham?
He should have known the moment he stepped off that plane.

He heard the yells from outside. Saw the civilian's face turning to ash as they realized they had just given out their positions. The quiet unlatching of something in the distance. The canister dropped in the room and rolled on the ground.
Only when it released Scarecrow's fear gas all over the small, badly ventilated room did he manage to move again.

When a confrontation with a powerful magic user goes awry, Damian is cursed, robbing him of his voice. Or, communicate without a fresh bruise appearing, that is.
What begins as an inconvenience quickly spirals into something far worse, as he finds himself struggling with the mounting realization: no one has noticed. As his silence deepens, so do the rifts with his family. He’s not helped by the many more sinister theories the people around him assume because of his new temperament.

Damian : Don't be ridiculous, he is my bodyguard. My father is the richest man in Gotham, getting kidnapped is unfortunately an often routine.
Jon "The Bodyguard" Kent : *whisper* since when?
Reporter : Does that mean Bruce Wayne doesn't care for your safety? Shouldn't your Father hire more qualified bodyguards for you?
Damian : Kent here is the only bodyguard I need. Show them, Kent.
Jon : ???
Damian : *pull the hem of Jon shirt revealing Superboy's muscle* he is very qualified in protecting me.
