Summary
A frustrating experience during a battle causes Julien and Occtis to reassess the argument that they had outside Obrimus Manor.
“What the fuck was that?” Julien’s voice was loud and clear and, most of all, more furious than Occtis had ever heard it before.
He grimaced slightly, but he wasn’t the one being yelled at, not this time, so he decided to take a few steps away from the group to begin the process of re-summoning Pin, who’d been destroyed in the battle.
“What was what?” Thimble asked, and she sounded genuinely confused. Human-sized again, and Occtis had almost gotten used to that. “Kattigan saved your life back there. Why are you so angry about it?”
It was an odd little reminder that Thimble hadn’t been along during Occtis’s trip with Julien to the old empire. She didn’t know Julien, not really. She knew some version of him that he’d been before his father had been murdered, but she didn’t know him now.
“I didn’t need any help,” Julien said, and Occtis could see him glaring around at the others. “I was fine.”

Summary
Two thick ugly cuts, identical places carefully parallel on his shoulders stood out in stark bloody contrast.
Fresh.
Clean.
Carefully placed.
Not the wild slash of desperation. The practiced precision of routine. Murry could hear blood rushing in her own ears.
She realized, dimly, that she had stopped breathing.
"...Azune."
He wouldn't look at her. His eyes remained fixed somewhere over her shoulder. His voice was barely more than a whisper.
"One for Teor and one for Cyd.”
---
Murray accidentally uncovers Azunes gruesome way to remember.

Summary
“He hasn't saved - you know what, never mind.” Occtis sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Julien has a particular set of people he’s very protective about. I happen to fall into that category because he needs me to get back at my family. That’s it.”
“Get back at your family.” Thimble repeats flatly. “The same family he let get away right now to burn himself for you?”
Or: Thimble realizes Julien isn't as nonchalant about Occtis as he'd like to claim. Whether or not *she* is, is absolutely besides the point

Summary
They are on the road when the rumours first reach them. Dol-Makjar is in chaos, in uprising, and this newborn revolution already has its first martyr. They say that when it became known what the Halovar had been trading away to the hells that the people surged in protest to their gates, and the Halovar lost control of their demons. They say that Captain Nayar broke ranks with the Sundered Houses in defense of the crowd, and many of his guard followed. They say that he rallied them with a display of sorcery so fierce it could only be old-blooded, that as he fell you could see in the smoke and sparks the form of a dragon roaring in anguish. The bold, excitable and perhaps foolish talk of lost great Houses, speak the name of Obridai with breathless eager voices. Risen from the ashes in Dol-Makjar’s, and perhaps Araman’s, darkest hours.
Julien and the others have barely had time to steady themselves after this new loss when two pigeons arrive, speaking with Murray and Hal's voices.
“We’re sending the stupid brave fucking idiot to you. Hide him ‘til he’s recovered. Tie him down if you have to.”
“Please take care of Azune, don’t let him hear it all at once. Poetic licence may have gotten the better of me.”
