Though he didn’t sleep a wink when the bell rang he was just as dazed and confused. Grabbing his stuff and rushing to his next class felt alien. Max rationalized it as Luis playing hooky for his first class of the day, good for him. If his sickness had inspired Luis to drop the goody goody act, then Max could get into it.
Classes passed and eventually it was lunch. Max was only interesting in learning one thing and it was the first thing he asked his lunch table. “Where’s Madrigal?”

“I mean... I see her point,” Pink continued softly after a beat. “You did use her as bait, Red. And then you ignored her to spend time with Luis...” She paused, searching her older sister’s face. “She just wants to help. She cares about you. I’ve seen the way she looks at you—no 'best friends' look at each other the way you two do.”
Red stiffened, the air trapping itself in her lungs. “We’re just friends, Pink. We’ve had a rough couple of days, that’s all.”
“Friends?” Pink let out a soft, sympathetic chuckle, shaking her head. “Red, I’ve watched you around other people. You build a ten-foot wall and dare everyone to try and climb it. But with Chloe? You let her walk right through the front door. And when she looked hurt tonight, you looked like your entire world was falling apart.”

“Looks like your moves don’t work anymore,” Max taunted, craning his neck up at the taller boy.
Luis only smirked back, unfazed. “Drop the act, Max. You and I both know those moves worked on you just fine. No one’s buying the cold shoulder.”
“Oh, so the big boy can speak now?” Max pointed a finger off toward the distant hills. “What do they feed you up on that mountain, Madrigal? Extra hay?”
Luis scoffed at his ex-boyfriend. God, it was pathetic how much he still missed him. “Why don’t you just keep it moving, Hatter?” He stepped directly into Max’s space, leaning down so his breath brushed Max’s cheek. “I’m sure this prep has plenty of chaos waiting for you to cause, right, Maxie?”
