Not even ten minutes in, Lightning had an arm draped protectively over his ribs and was leaning against the back of the couch. His cheek was turned sideways, resting against the cushion. His eyes were shut, and there was a grimace on his face. And now that Doc was listening, his breathing sounded a little shallow, too.

"Hey, kid," Doc said a little gruffly. Quiet, but sharp enough to wake him from his doze. Lightning's eyes sluggishly fluttered open.

"Yeah? You need something?" He asked, wiping any trace of pain off his face as he straightened up a bit to look at Doc.

"What's wrong with you?" Doc asked bluntly.

Lightning looked a little startled at the question. "What? Nothing's wrong." His brows knit together in confusion.

"You're in pain," Doc said, pointing to his guarded ribs. "You have been all day."

Lightning smirked sheepishly. "Just happens sometimes," Lightning said lowly, in an unconcerned tone. He leaned back into the couch again, one hand still resting over his ribs. "Just get headaches sometimes, or my ribs something act up or something. Just old things. They just hurt sometimes if I push too hard during a race weekend, or sometimes with the weather. It's not really consistent, though. It doesn't happen that often and I forget about it most of the time." Lightning said, shrugging, his eyes drifting back to the TV.

Tears streamed down Lightning's face. "Doc please," Lightning said, sobbing. “I...I need you. I need you, Doc.”

Lightning rested his head carefully on Doc's chest and he sobbed bitterly. Despair and a broken heart were the only things he felt. He didn't feel the pain from the accident. But he hadn't cared about it anyway.

Not too much. The doctor gave me painkillers,” Doc said calmly and Lightning nodded. That was the most important thing. He didn't want Doc to suffer.

"Maybe you're having twins," Doc said out of the blue.

    "What?" Lightning was confused.

“Wouldn’t it be fun?” Doc grinned.

“What do you mean… wait a minute… You heard what I said when you were sleeping?”

"A little. Some things. Your future plans for example.” Doc chuckled and Lightning blushed. Luckily it was too dark to see.

“And you’ll fix that lamp you broke, you clumsy boy,” Doc said with a smirk.

    “Of course. I’ll do that.”

    "And kiddo?”

    “Hmm?”

“I need you too," Doc said, looking at his kid. Lightning smiled.

"Love you, Doc," he said, trying to hide the tears streaming down his face again. Although Doc probably noticed anyway. Doc always noticed everything.

"I love you too, son," were Doc's words before Lightning fell asleep with a warm feeling in his heart and as relieved as he had never been before.

Time passed. No one could put into words how happy everyone was that Doc was feeling better. Lightning was released from the hospital after a few days and went home with the others. But only to get a few things for Doc, because he was supposed to stay another week. Mater still hadn't shown up and Lightning decided to stop at his house. He was still weak but getting better. He could walk short distances well, so Sally let him out near Mater's house.

Mater was sitting on the steps outside his house but didn't seem to notice his friend. He looked down with a hint of sadness on his face.

"Hey," Lightning said and Mater looked up in shock.

“Lightning? Oh... I..." he stammered but didn't know what to say.

Lightning sat down on the step next to him. He winced when he felt his ribs hurt.

"Yeah, it's me," Lightning said. He didn't know what to say either. He had never seen his usually cheerful friend so depressed.

“I think I’ll leave,” Mater said suddenly.

    Lightning frowned.

    What?

    He hadn't expected that.

“You mean… you’ll leave the town?” Lightning asked in shock and to his horror, Mater nodded.

“It was all my fault,” Mater said, his voice shaking. “The cow... I was messing around with the cows again. It went there. I almost killed you two. I'm so sorry. I need to leave.”

Lightning was silent for a moment. It was a difficult topic.

“I need you, Mater. Please… don’t leave me,” Lightning said, looking deep into his friend’s eyes. Mater looked at him.

“You don’t need me. I only get you in trouble.” Shaking his head, he looked back at the floor.

“I do need you. Who will tell me all the stories? Who can I do nonsense with that ends up with cactus needles in my arm?”

That earned Lightning a slight chuckle from Mater.

    “Mater?”

    “Hmmm?”

    "I forgive you."

“You do?” Mater looked hopefully at Lightning again.

"I do. And Doc told me he forgives you too.”

“I…I don’t deserve that. I don’t know what to say.”

"Just say you'll never bother the cows again in the morning until midday, ‘cause that’s practice time," Lightning said and smiled.

Mater smiled back. “I promise I will stick to it. Thanks, buddy.”

Lightning nodded. “You know… I could use some help. I'm supposed to get Doc a few things, two or three books or something. But I’m not allowed to carry heavy weight yet and…”

“Oh yeah, sure thing. I’m in,” Mater said, standing up and holding out a hand to Lightning. He took it and stood up.

“I knew I could count on you.” Lightning smiled and Mater smiled back.

“And I knew I made a good choice,” Mater said. “In my best friend.”

Mater snorted. “Aw, miss Sally wouldn’t do nothin’! She knows it’s all in good fun!”

“Mm-hm, which is why she grounded you two after the nail gun incident.”

Lightning scowled. “I wasn’t grounded. I agreed to take things easy for a while after that.”

“Nah, we was grounded,” Mater said, thinking back with a frown. The expression quickly flipped. “Totally worth it though.”

    “It so was.”

With another snort of laughter, Mater finally got that noogie in. “And that’s why we’re best buds!”

    Bookmarker's Notes

Doc opened his eyes and rubbed them. He stretched and looked at the clock. It was 8:45. Not bad he thought. He looked over at Lightning’s bed. He still had his racing suit on. The headphones were right next to him, and he laid on the edge of the bed, a pen near his hand. Doc got up to go to the bathroom. When he was done he grabbed the notepad and looked at it. There were a bunch of sloppy drawings of Lightning himself. Some drawing attempts at his car. And a few of Doc. That made him smile. He looked down at Lightning and watched him for a bit. His back rose and fell as he breathed. His hair looked like a mess. His mouth was slightly open so there was no doubt there was drool there. Doc looked away and put the notepad on the desk.

He turned the Tv on, making sure the volume was low. He clicked through the channels before stopping on a racing one. It talked about yesterday’s race and upcoming interviews with Lightning. Doc smiled and kept looking through the channels. He found a show that looked interesting and started to watch it. Really he was just waiting for Lightning to wake up, so they could get breakfast. Doc managed to watch almost one episode of his show before he heard Lightning groan.

He rubbed his eyes and yawned.
“Ugh… I have a headache.” He mumbled. “What time is it..?” He looked at Doc. Doc looked at the clock.
“9:16.” He replied. Lightning nodded and slammed his head back into the blanket.
    “How you feeling, rookie?”
“Okay.” He said. “My head hurts. Also I'm not a rookie anymore.”
“Eh whatever,” Doc shrugged. “You want some medicine or something?”
    “Yea…”
Doc got up and went through his bag. He pulled out some aspirin he had packed.
“Here.” He threw the bottle at McQueen. Which hit his arm. He lifted his head up and grabbed the bottle. He opened it up and took some. He popped them in his mouth, and threw the bottle back at Doc.
“Water.” Lightning said, rolling on the bed to the nightstand. He found his cup from last night with a little bit of water in it. He drank it.

“Wanna go get breakfast?” Doc asked Lightning.
“Sure.” He shrugged. They got ready for the day, before heading out.
“Oh, bring those. You never know when you’ll need them.” Doc pointed to the headphones.
“I think you can connect your phone to it and play music through them.” Lightning shrugged with a slight smile, and put them around his neck. The two men made it to a restaurant and ordered breakfast. Doc had eggs and sausage, while Lightning had pancakes.
“So, did those headphones work well?” Doc asked him.
    “Yep.” Lightning says, smiling.
“Good.” Doc says, with a small smile.

“Uh..” Lightning started, fidgeting with his fingers.
“Thank you for these. I don’t know if I said that already. But, I like these a lot.” He said.
“No problem kid. Just wanna make sure you’re not too upset y’know.”
“Yeah. Thanks for that.” Lightning says, smiling.

Lightning doesn’t know what he’d do without Doc now. He’s surprised he'd lived so long without him. He grazed his fingers on the headphones, and smiled even more. He looked down at his pancakes and began to eat them.

    Bookmarker's Notes

It’s late when Doc gets home, almost midnight and counting. He and Sheriff were in an intense round of chess and got slightly carried away, Red was simply an onlooker and referee so they wouldn’t get too out of hand. He only realized the time when Sarge and Fillmore came around, asking what was taking them so long and reminding them bitterly that Lightning was home today.

It had completely slipped Doc’s mind.

They’d finished up the game as quickly as possible and went their separate ways, with Sheriff promising to help Red clean up the mess they made and Doc rushing to get home.

He assumed Lightning was out cold by now, judging by the muddled conversation he had with him over Mack’s cab radio, the kid sounded out of his mind exhausted. So, the sound of the TV in the living room was certainly shocking to hear when he quietly slipped in the front door with slightly more grace than Lightning did when he decided to climb out his bedroom window in the middle of the night.

Doc slips his shoes off, avoiding the shoes the kid left haphazardly in the middle of the hallway, not even noticing the extra set by the door. He makes his way towards the living room quietly.

“What are you doing up, ki-” Doc cuts himself off immediately when he's greeted with the sight in the living room.

Lightning is asleep, but so is Sally. They’re curled up beside one another, clinging to each other like a lifeline, and they both look content and unbothered by the TV that’s blasting some movie only a few feet away from them.

Doc smiles, they look happy and warm, and very overjoyed to be together. The house is cold though, so he takes it upon himself to collect a blanket from Lightning’s room and throw it over the two.

He shuts off the television and the hallway light when he leaves, leaving them cuddled in the dark and silence. They’re good for each other, and he’s happy Lightning’s job doesn’t seem to fray their relationship.

Plus, it was nice hearing both sides of their excitement, with Lightning buying her little gifts after races, talking about how ecstatic he was to see her, and Sally gushing about the movies she set up at the drive-in for them to watch on dates when he got home.
