Summary
A fantastical short story full of mysterious fae, allegory, and gender exploration. Original work inspired by a dream.
The MC simultaneously faces what many trans folks experience over the course of their lives: rejection by family/social circles, homelessness/hunger, loneliness in a sort of exile, suicidal thoughts, and a persistent dysphoria throughout forcing themselves to act within the confines of the gender they were socialized to perform from birth. Don't worry, there is a happy ending.
The King--to me--felt like a figure split between representing the constraints and rigged-games of the Patriarchy in the modern world, but also a monolith representing a queer, mystical escape from them. What are the fae but our creative manifestations of everything considered "queer" or deviant by trad-minded folks?Song recommendation: I had fun bumping "Always" by Vioflesh during the duel scene. It's kind of sexy but also foreboding in a fitting soft-dark fantasy way.
