    “Conner Alexander Kent,” she said, tone dropping into that deadly quiet parents used right before grounding you for life.

    So that was his name.

    “Hey, Cassie,” Conner said cheerfully—too cheerfully—before casually slipping an arm around Tim’s shoulders. Like Tim was his designated human shield. Or emotional support nerd.

    Tim stiffened, then forced himself not to. Conner was warm. Very warm. Distractingly warm.

    Cassie’s blue eyes laser-focused on Conner. “What happened to studying?”

    The glare she leveled at him could have melted steel.

    Conner’s grin broadened like he’d just been handed a get-out-of-jail-free card. “Well, my new friend here—”

    “Tim,” Tim supplied, because apparently he was now part of the alibi.

    “Tim,” Conner echoed, his smile never dipping for even a second. “Said he would help me with it. ‘Cause I was struggling with some terms.”

    Tim Drake was tired. Tired of talking business with his father. Tired of avoiding attacks from a certain small assassin child. Tired from dealing with the distance his big brother had brought on himself.

    It was because of this all-consuming tired, sprinkled in with some loneliness, that he found himself at his other big brother's door.

    What happens after shows him that maybe the tiredness wasn't so bad, not when he has a big brother that would move the moon and stars to make him happy. Maybe his birthday could actually be happy for once too. Who knew Jason was so good at stalking choosing good gifts.

    OR:

    Tim goes to Jason's apartment in the middle of the night so he won't be alone. He gets more than he bargained for when the best birthday presents ever get dropped into his lap by the most surprising candidate for "World's Best Brother". Happy birthday, Tim!

    “I think I’m allergic to Alfred’s new detergent,” Tim says, scratching, scratching, scratching.

    Unconvinced, Bruce takes Tim’s hand away from where he’s tearing at his neck and pushes up the sleeve. Tiny pink dots freckle across Tim’s skin. “You have chickenpox.”

    He might as well have just told Tim he had testicular cancer with the way his face blanches in horror. “You’re kidding me."
