Summary
At the end of Mayday, Varian chooses to side with Eugene and Rapunzel.
Now a part of Rapunzel’s traveling party headed for the Dark Kingdom, Varian tries to convince himself that he made the right choice in the end.
But that’s a little hard to do when the shadow of what he’d done still hangs dark and heavy between them, and neither he nor Rapunzel are willing to talk about it. But hey, if no one’s bringing it up, then it must not matter. So why rock the lifeboat they’d offered him?
Besides, Rapunzel said she'll try to be better, and so Varian will do the same. He just has to have faith in the process, and everything else will follow.
...Right?

While getting ready for the inevitable full-out attack on Old Corona, Varian accidentally damages his automaton-inspired mech and is unable to repair it before the Royal Guard and Rapunzel arrive.
Luckily, Varian is nothing if not prepared, and so he moves on to Plan B: execute a tactical retreat and rally again another day.
Unfortunately for him, Eugene and the rest of the crew are hot on his tail.

In the wake of turning against and defeating the Saporians, Varian realizes that those words can only mean one thing: parole. His freedom, in exchange for his services.
Varian has no plans to endanger his newfound tentative freedom. He'll do anything to stay out of the dungeons and away from Andrew, anything, and that means doing whatever Rapunzel wants.
So what if he never gets enough sleep? So what if he flinches every time someone raises a hand too quickly? So what if his father constantly looks at him with worried eyes?
