Of all the things Hongjoong had expected to happen in his life, being stranded on a deserted island with a siren as his companion hadn't ever been one of them. Even less had he expected to develop feelings for the creature, which left him faced with a complicated decision.

While Hongjoong wished he could dissolve into a puddle and become one with the earth, Seonghwa was staring at the building with pure admiration, not even bothered by the fact that Hongjoong had just secured himself the award for magical fuck-up of the year. It would take the de-transfiguration team weeks to restore the damage he had done.
“I swear, I just wanted to wash the dishes a bit more quickly! I don't know how I turned a three-story building into… into this!”Or:
The great wizard Kim Hongjoong doesn't have issues controlling his magical abilities. Unless it's for cooking. Or washing the dishes. Or whenever he's trying to impress the beautiful herbologist and potions master he only just met. Fine, maybe he has some issues at times, but who would be able to keep their cool around someone as beautiful as Park Seonghwa?

Growing up, Hongjoong had heard whispered tales about the Manyeo, a cult of dark magic users that were stolen as children and moulded to become monsters. Some say that they trade their souls for power, some say that they kill anyone who sees them, some say that they're just a myth to make children behave. Once he became an adult, a pirate captain, Hongjoong had passed the Manyeo off as being figures of fiction.
But the man locked in an enemy ship's brig had all the signs: the tattoos down his back, the dye that stained his fingertips, the clothes and weapons and jewellery. Maybe he really was a Manyeo, and maybe that was why his lips had been sewn shut. You can't cast spells if you can't speak.
If he had been a wise man, Hongjoong would have killed the stranger while he was weak. If he had been a wise man, he wouldn't have looked into the other's eyes and noticed how they seemed to hold all the stars from the night sky. But Hongjoong had never claimed to be a wise man, and he wasn't about to start now.

Summary
"Do you miss being human?"
Seonghwa picks at one of his scales, letting his nail catch the underside of it and push upwards with just enough pressure that it stings. He mulls over how honest he wants to be, knowing that any sign of weakness could easily be used against him.
But nostalgia paints his memories in a bittersweet, rosy glow. The calm before the storm, when all he had to worry about was whether or not he'd get in trouble for sneaking out at night. When his world was so much smaller and his happiness had a name and a beautiful, dimpled smile.
"Of course," Seonghwa whispers. He casts his gaze on Hongjoong once more, swallowing around the sudden tightness in his throat.
Hongjoong's eyebrows raise by just a fraction, but the rest of his expression remains neutral. Non-judgemental. He pulls out his notebook again and flips through the pages until he finds what he's looking for. When he holds it up, Seonghwa finds the same hourglass drawing from earlier. "Would you do anything to return to that time?"
Or: A journey to find the treasure that will turn back the hands of time and reverse the consequences of their actions. No matter the costs.
