Summary
Halfway between the ruins of Tau Ceti, and L’howon, the human survivors of the Marathon are woken from cryostasis to preform necessary labor on the Narh’Lar, the new ship they never had any say in joining. Helmed by an AI overlord who makes it abundantly clear he cares not for their comfort or happiness, and the feeling is mutual.
Everett, a repair technician, now separated from everything and everyone who made his life make sense, struggles to find connections with others. Until a random volunteer job winds up earning a newfound respect, and insight into their captain. And again, the feeling is mutual.

Both wanted to help, but couldn’t… Though John could have simply been applying human qualities it didn’t have.

Summary
A hand pressed against its back, pressing under the spikes of its spinal strut. It was offending. The heat felt searing against its metal body, moreso than the fire and the pressure was pushing at a feedback ghost that lingered towards pain. Reflexively the robot flared its plating up to reject its presence, before turning to apprehend the limb. A harsh metal grip seized a small, and almost absurdly soft hand. Yanking it away, and earning a loud gasp.

Summary
The ability to question orders had always been in the robot. They understood it well, its presence there to allow a better fulfillment of the task, rather than to inspire disobedience. If the order was ‘shoot them’, it would of course adapt to whatever external circumstances presented themselves. Locked doors, barricades, opposing fire power, and similar obstructions. However if shooting became impossible, the robot would think. Dig to the root desire of the order, the desire to end a specific life. Perhaps another route would be favorable. Perhaps an airlock, or a fist could accomplish the same goal without disappointing its commander.
It was a core function. One that arose in times of difficulty, and yet… the human it found itself in employ to found it easy to trigger such a previously seldom used function on a daily basis.
Will Robinson wants to apply human qualities to his alien robot friend, however doesn't quite understand the cultural differences there are between them.
Alternatively, the Robot doesn't understand what these orders mean.Series
