I’m excited to get some sleep.
His chest suddenly feels like it's sinking, collapsing in on itself, heart squeezed between his ribs as it speeds up and beats at a steady thump, thump, thump, so hard he can feel it in the soft column of his throat. He freezes, looking down to see he had subconsciously started twisting Rika’s ring on his finger, the jewel glinting every time it caught the lighting at a certain angle.
I don’t want to be alone.

“Yuta!” Maki’s voice breaks through the night like a gunshot.
There’s a car pulled over on the road in front of her flashing its hazards, a fancy one—a Ferrari, candy apple red, smooth and shiny like glitter. The driver’s side door hung open, bleeding light onto the side of the road and in the puddle cast by the car’s lights crouched Yuta, phone in one hand and head in the other, tearing at his hair.

Summary
There had been a point, even when he was laying flayed open on her table, that she didn’t believe it. Maybe it was a ploy to convince the higher-ups he was dead, and he would resurface a few weeks later. Maybe it was a decoy body, and he had been taken elsewhere—anything but the idea that he was actually dead. He always seemed—and quite literally was—untouchable. But he ended up in her morgue for autopsy anyway. It was something they always joked about together, her getting to dissect him.
It was just a joke! She had wanted to scream. She never actually wanted this to come to pass. Maybe he was laughing at her from wherever he was now. He made good on his word, now she has to make good on hers.
