Summary
"Hey, I need to go back to my office and get my wallet," he says, opening the classroom door for her. "But it's kind of out of the way. There's a courtyard… right here—" He opens a door at the end of the hall that goes out into a little courtyard in the center of the building. Nothing fancy, just a few trees, a couple of wrought iron benches, and some pitifully neglected flower beds that have more weeds than flowers, but it's shady and quiet, which are the most important qualities he's looking for right now. "You want to wait here a minute while I run back and get it? Five minutes, tops."
She gives him that sunlight-bright smile again, and nods. "Yeah. Thanks."

Summary
Some nights were, naturally, worse than others.
Nights where Frank laid in bed for so long, staring at the ceiling, that it made his heart start to race with anxiety and his back ache and ache and ache no matter how he positioned himself. Nights where his thoughts spiraled out into worst-case-scenarios that seemed so vivid and inevitable that he would have to get up and go to the bathroom, just to turn the light on and look at himself in the mirror to remember what was actually real.
Those were the nights when he wanted the pills again the most: alone in his guest bedroom, trying to wring sleep out of his body like the last few drops of water out of a dirty dishcloth.
He tried not to call Mel on nights like that. He did not always succeed.

Summary
For a moment that seemed to draw on for an hour, nobody said anything, the awkward shock of whatever the hell had just occurred settling between them all. Garcia turned toward Frank slowly.
“What the fuck is up with ER Barbie today?” she asked. “Did Poison Ivy over there key her car or something?”
Santos had to cover her mouth to stifle the laugh that burst out. She would think this was hilarious. He bit his tongue so he didn’t say anything he’d regret - they were just beginning to tolerate each other.
Frank stared out the closed doors. “I have no idea.”
or: the one where an overconfident intern openly flirts with Frank, and unleashes a side of Mel nobody has seen before.

Summary
All of Mel's boyfriends.
Mel would never presume that Frank Langdon is boyfriend material.
Those were the words Princess had used once—though in a very different tone, after she’d stared a little too long at the new radiologist who’d come down for a consult.
“What about me?” Frank had said, winking at her like a dog begging for a treat.
It had made Mel feel inexplicably sad.
Set some time after season two.

Summary
Loving Mel is strikingly different from loving Abby, as much as he hates himself for even making the comparison. She had been keeping herself and her sister afloat for years through college and medical school, all while maintaining a bright attitude that drew him to her in the first place. She was grounded enough in reality for him to know that she was not wholly innocent, but there was a brilliant allure to the way she interacted with the world despite knowing how cruel it could be. Her polite exterior was mistaken far too often for fragility, even though she may be the toughest person that he has ever met.
When he takes care of her, he knows that it is only because she has allowed him to, not because she expects him to. There is a difference between those notions.
