“I’ve been interested in you since I saw you at Tribecca five years ago.” The admission pooled dread somewhere at the base of Xavier’s spine. Wednesday sensed his discomfort and continued, choosing her words carefully. “I thought your performance was so tender and honest. I’m not usually drawn to characters like that. I only went to the screening because I had time to kill before Fresh Blood.” She stirred her half empty cup idly.
He suddenly had a lot of questions, but he could also feel his body tensing up, mentally pulling up the protocol for what to do in this situation, but it wasn’t fully coming to the surface. He didn’t feel like he was in danger. First of all, Wednesday hadn’t jumped at the chance to date him. For this meeting she’d specifically prioritized privacy and safety. And nothing abnormal had happened since he was in her apartment. He took an unsteady breath and realized that she was blushing. “Did you think I’d change my mind because you had a crush on me?” he asked.
“I had a celebrity crush,” she said, letting her words drip with condescension.
He laughed, relieved. “Wednesday. It’s not that big of a deal.”
