    The first loss that Eva Stratt experienced was her childhood dog.

    She was too young to remember what year it was, but old enough that the emotions still stuck with her. The indignation, more than anything. Righteous frustration. The dog was young for how sick she had gotten, not a puppy but still full of life until those last few days. In an instant, she had gone from bog standard goofy golden retriever to a hurt, whimpering thing, limping around with big pleading eyes.

    Eva’s father took their dog to be put down without saying a word to anyone. That was what always got to her. Her beloved dog never got one last day of luxury. She was taken to a sterile clinic and injected without any ceremony.

    They had five days until the launch of the Hail Mary, and their scientists still hadn’t perfected Dr. Grace’s methodology.
