    There's a lot of fanon about Black Widow's acclimating to SHIELD, but I'm interested in Clint's acclimating to SHIELD, and how he deals with his own issues.

    From Nick Fury's perspective, Clint's masking and coping abilities must seem contradictory, suspicious.

    Fury decides to conduct an experiment to see if those contradictions are hiding a cunning psychopath who has tricked Phil Coulson into bringing him in, or something else.

    Today has been strange and, considering the majority of Bucky’s life, when he says strange, Bucky really means that.

    It’s not one big thing that makes it strange. He’s fought giant interdimensional squid monsters while standing on the shoulder of the statue of liberty. Things like that don’t faze him any more. It’s the little things that are making the back of his brain itch. All the little things that are starting to add up. It’s that uncanny valley feeling: everything just a little left of normal, not enough for you to say exactly what's wrong, but enough that you know something isn’t right.

    And he’s pretty sure it’s got something to do with Clint Barton.

    For James Barnes, former brainwashed HYDRA assassin and the world’s longest serving POW, waking up in pain is not unfamiliar. But waking to suffocating smoke, a dozen stinging slices across his skin from flying debris, and now someone shoving him in the sternum with a rifle barrel? Those are a little more unusual.

    Add to that the fun fact that he can’t see or hear anything at all...Well, that's definitely new.
