Its side door opened, and a child jumped out and staggered onto the grass, wincing as his knapsack thumped against his bruises. He shut the door. The truck roared away as his gaze darted across the yard, and seeing no one, he ran and crouched behind a tree. He wiped at the dirt and dry blood on his chin.
