This was fun to read. Thank you Laure for your participation and your volunteer work.
Here's a questions for your consideration.
When translating for the site, even if it's largely admin or news documents, are there some words describing the fanfic or contents here that don't translate well into other languages like French? If so, how do you decide whether to swap in an "adjacent" version of the word or stick with the English word?
Thanks a lot SierraIndigo! And also thanks everyone who commented <3
There are plenty of fandom words that don't play well with translation yep ^^" What we do with them is discuss a whole lot and research whether there's already an appropriate term coined. If there isn't, we have to decide whether to invent one (that's rare), or to keep the English. One of my colleagues gave me the example of the word… "fan". At first we used the translation "aficionados", but it sounds really weird in French, so we decided to keep fan in the end. It's used enough in French to be understandable! The other problem we can encounter is how to judge which form of a word is widely used in the French fandom. Because many of us engage mostly with the English side of fandom, and are simply not used to French in a fanfic context. I hope this answers your question a bit!
