Summary
Getting settled on a new planet has all kinds of ups and downs, Ryland Grace knows this. Eridian's are very different, not to mention simply their method of speech.
Grace may have forgotten to mention that some forms of sound, sudden and sharp, are painful to humans. It never came up, and after nearly a year on Erid, it had sort of slipped his mind. Not to mention, being on a space craft for nearly five years must have brought an issue like this to light, but it seems that he and Rocky had just gotten lucky.
The alternative, the pain of new sounds is discovered the hard way, with a bit too much blood as a result.

“Very blob-like.”
I laugh lightly. His voice is still off, but at least he’s respecting my wish to lighten the mood by making jokes.
“Blobs need to be flexible, don’t they?”
“Yes. Endoskeleton very fascinating.”
“For sure. Also, at the end of my spine, I have a tailbone. It’s a vestigial feature, meaning it’s something human ancestors once needed but modern humans have absolutely no use for.”
I hear him shift again, then he makes a note that I’ve come to realize is an Eridian’s version of ‘ugh’.
“Not fascinating. Inefficient.”

Grace grows severely emaciated towards the end of the journey to Erid. He uses this as an opportunity to teach a worried Rocky about the structure of his bones in a poor attempt to distract Rocky from the severity of his malnourishment.

The world feels right again with Rocky back aboard. As right as it can these days anyway.
The loneliness that lurked in every corner of the ship is once again replaced with the chittering sounds of Rocky, who is always tinkering with something. Or asking questions about Earth's life.It’s soothing. He really did miss having him around.
Good thing he's got his own portable Earth thinking machine now.
He’s going to need it.

“Rocky, I…” his voice trembled, small and fragile. “I don’t know if I can do that anymore… I don’t know if I want to live anymore…”
He felt Rocky’s hand stutter against his back.
“What Grace talking about, question?” Rocky asked, something wary slipping into his tone.
Ryland hesitated, teeth pressing into his lower lip. He didn’t know if he should say it, didn’t know if it was right, introducing something like this to a species that might not even have a concept for it.
But Rocky felt safe. Like he could say anything, and Rocky would stay.

three months on erid but ryland still struggles with food, he figures out perhaps it isn't really from the scarcity of it.
