Finally reminiscing about the past

Summary:

Sun, Luna and Earth finally have the dreaded Proto and Theia conversation

Notes:

Sweet mother of pearl, I’m finally done with this fic
My brain hurts lol
This took me weeks to finally finish
(Would’ve been done sooner but I’ve been binge playing the game REPO tbh, I even got to level 18 and then I died >:/)
Sorry if it’s ooc and stuff being slightly repeated, my brain is running low on sleep lol
I wish that Sun or anyone could finally talk about Proto and Theia to Earth and Luna ;-;

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It’s been a long while since Sun has truly looked at Earth and Luna.

Was it because they came from the collision of two of his precious planets? Was it because every time he looks at the two, he gets reminded of Proto and Theia and his failure to keep them apart?

Was it because he sees resemblances of the two every time Earth laughs/smiles or when Luna cries/gets mad?

Sun doesn’t know anymore.

When has he ever known anything that happens in his solar system? The Grand Tack? The Moon Revolution? Planet X getting kicked out because of Jupiter and Saturn? The multitude of problems that go on with the planets and the moons?

Has he ever been a safe space for his planets to talk or to confide in?

Sun sighed deeply. “I really messed up.”

He especially messed up when he decided against telling Earth and Luna about the planets that came before them, well, their “parents” in a sense for billions of years. Like they have been put on the shelf hidden away from Earth and Luna except for the other planets and Sun.

Once the others come back (or if he gets the others), he should really get everyone together to talk about it. To talk about them even though it might bring up some messy feelings. Messy feelings are a lot better than unheard ones, that’s for sure.

As Sun continues to look at the two, it's almost unsettling with how much they remind him of Proto and Theia. Earth and Luna were truly the perfect combination of the two deceased lovers.

“You both remind me so much of them,” Sun said fondly but sadly as he looked away from the sibling duo.

“What do you mean?” Luna asked, curiously. But in the deepest parts of their mind, they knew exactly what Sun meant by that statement. They knew that Sun was talking about the planets that came before them.

Earth knew exactly what Sun meant, considering that he had already met the two.

He’s had to go on a whole journey to find the answers for why he wanted life and coming to terms with learning about Proto's and Theia’s collision.

But what about Luna then? Luna didn’t go on that journey to find answers about life or to learn about the planets that came before them. They only got the flashbacks; they didn’t get that chance like what Earth had. Not even getting to see them first hand either.

Earth understood why he didn’t get answers from anyone, considering that Theia’s name was a trigger word for him, but they could’ve at least told Luna in privacy. It was a little aggravating to say the least.

“Sun, I-I know why you guys didn’t tell me about them, about Proto and Theia, but the very least you guys could have done was tell Luna! It’s Luna's story too!” Earth huffed angrily on Luna's behalf.

“Earth it’s-“ Luna was just about to say that they were fine but then decided against it after realizing the others had put them through pure stress when their planet left his orbit and almost froze to death.

It especially made them mad when the others even left them out of the loop. Theia’s name didn’t even trigger them, and they still got refused on answers.

“You know what! It’s not fine! I had every right to know!” Luna said furiously as they crossed their arms in anger.

“We had every right to know who Proto and Theia were!” Earth added.

“I know that now, and I’m sorry for not telling you-either of you.” Sun apologized regretfully. Earth and Luna were right, though; they did have every right to learn about them. Proto and Theia created the two after all.

“You could… try telling us more about them,” Luna suggested in hopes that Sun would actually give them answers they needed instead of the half assed ones they had been provided.

Any answer they were given has either been half assed or basically no answer given at all. It wasn’t right at all.

Sun let out a quiet sigh.

“Alright, I'll tell you two about them,” Sun said, motioning for the two to get comfortable because this will be a long story.

“Who first then?”

Earth and Luna turned to both look at each other like they knew who to pick first.
"Theia," they said together.
Sun let out a hum and then answered.

“Theia, she-”

Sun swallowed his tears when the memories of her started to resurface; he can’t cry now; he promised to tell the two about Proto and Theia. There’s no time for tears right now.

“She was kind, passionate, and wanted to learn about everything in this universe, but did she have a spitfire, Heh!" Sun chuckled tearfully.

“She loved questions and wanted to find the answer for everything. She even refused to stop until she found the answer she was looking for," he added as he continued talking about

“What about Proto?” Earth asked. Proto's story needed attention too.

“Proto liked to play and joke around a lot. He was always with Mars. Those two were practically inseparable.” Sun smiled back fondly at how those two always got along so well.

“How was he with Theia? Did they ever hang around each other?" Luna questioned Sun with a curious glint in their eyes.

“Hah! No! They couldn’t stand each other at first!” Sun laughed as he remembered the very first interaction between the two. Theia trying to talk while Proto rudely interrupts her.

It really was a terrible first impression. Not wrong if they wanted to steer clear of each other.

“Theia would hang around Venus while Proto had Mars but...over time..." Sun stopped and looked away, with tears in his eyes.

“They started to talk to each other and figured out that they were trying to obtain the same dream."

Earth spoke up to finish Sun’s sentence. “To create life in the universe by either them or a planet to host life and a moon.”

Sun looked to Earth flabbergasted. “How does he know that?!”

“As I said, when I went unconscious I talked to them. They told me just about everything, from you talking about life to pushing them apart when they knew what exactly they wanted," Earth shrugged.

“I never wanted them to risk their lives over it!” Sun cried out.

No matter how hard he tried to separate Proto and Theia, they still ended up together. He never wanted a collision to happen; He never wanted them to die.

“It would have happened whether you liked it or not, Sun. That’s how…life is. It’s unpredictable. It’s chaotic. Entropy and all that,” Earth chided.

“It’s what they wanted, not you, not Venus, not Mars. Not anyone. They chose it for themselves," he continued as he steeled himself so he wouldn't end up crying.

“I know,” Sun for once in his life said quietly.

“Sun?”

"Yes, Luna?” Sun asked nervously.

Luna played with their fingers nervously before asking their last question.

"I have one last question? Do you think Proto and Theia would’ve liked us? I mean- we accomplished their goals, their dreams.”

“I can’t say for certain, but I think they would be proud of you both. Sun said while smiling sadly.

Despite that many years have passed, Sun still can’t help but choke up in tears when talking about the two. He doesn’t think he’ll ever get over their deaths. They were his precious planets after all.

But, oh earth, he hardly knew them, and yet he can’t help but choke down the lump in his throat to stop the tears that wanted to flow out of him.

Who knew hearing that someone would be proud of you would actually make you cry?!

He thought that he would’ve been totally fine and not cry…until the inevitable came and heard the one sound he wished that he would never want to hear.

Oh, Luna.

The slight cries coming from them were honestly breaking his core. He didn’t expect them to cry?!

He doesn’t even know if Luna would want it, but he held his hand out in case they wanted comfort from him.

He kind of expected Luna to refuse the offer and compose themselves like they usually do; not crash into his chest and hug him.

Although he guessed that he needed the hug too since he started to feel tears sliding down his face with no way of stopping.

Luna could squeeze a little tighter as Earth began to slide, his arms around them, and hug them as they both cried together.

Heh, I guess that they’re both being an emotional wreck right now.

In the meantime, as they cried, Sun looked away from them and didn’t look back until it resorted to hardly a sniffle between the both of them. Let them sort their emotions on their own.

By the time the duo stopped crying, Sun started to turn back around and noticed that Luna was sitting close to Earth while Earth had an arm slung around Luna's shoulders.

Both holding each other up and looking completely content while still having red rimmed eyes due to the crying they’ve done.

The time Sun had to himself, he finally realized something. Something he should’ve said long ago.

“You know? Their collision was one of the worst days of my life.”

"But... it brought life into the universe. It gave me you two." Sun smiled, with tears in his eyes.

“Even though you, specifically Earth, have been close to giving me a core attack multiple times," Sun said as he squinted his eyes and lightly scolded Earth.

“Hey!” Earth cried out, putting his hand on his chest like he was absolutely offended by Sun’s statement.

“I speak only the truth, Earth,” Sun chuckled.

Earth still couldn’t help but gasp offendedly. How dare he?! But to be fair he couldn’t help but look sheepish for being called out.

“Pfft-“

Sun’s and Earth's argument was cut short when they both looked to the direction of what made the sound.

Lo and behold, it was actually Luna, trying not to laugh at their antics but failing miserably.

“My own moon, my own sibling laughing at me!” Earth gasped dramatically.

“You’re supposed to defend me, not agree with him!” He added.

“It is true though,” Luna said smugly, with evidence of laughter still on their face.

Earth pouted as he looked away from the traitor he called his moon, his sibling. But he couldn’t stay mad long, as if he were mad in the first place.

Sun continued to watch the two goof off and let out a quiet sigh.

(These two… Proto, Theia, you would’ve loved every bit of them.)
