Work Text:

Intro audio:

Unless we try, baby, try

If I had a dream and it got away
If I found the words
Would I know what to say?
(Try to believe)
If I had a chance to be someone else

Yeah, if I try to believe, try to believe

Cover art. A sunbeam and Papyrus's hand both reach down to Flowey, who's looking up from the flower patch in the shadowed Ruins.

Outro audio:

If I had a chance to be someone else
Yeah, if I try to believe, try to believe

It's so hard to find an answer
It's so hard to stand alone
It's so hard to find a feeling
That was buried long ago
It's so hard to trust another
When it's easier to hide
It's so hard to believe
Unless we try, baby, try

Ooh, try to believe one more time
Oh, and I try, baby, try, baby, try...

Notes:

Thanks for listening!

I love that we get a fic dedicated to revisiting Flowey in this post-canon section of this series, and that it's a dip into his pov again. After all his shenanigans pre-Undertale, and the bits he contributed during the game, and then how he lingered underground with the other flowers in the post-pacifist ending...

It's especially good to revisit with Papyrus returning, after all the ways Papyrus narration stubbornly insisted on seeing Flowey as a friend despite everything. It was really fulfilling to read some of these lines with a tone of tearing up while saying it!

Intro and outro music clips are from Try to Believe by Oingo Boingo. I figured out what I wanted to use for the outro very early on in podding this series, back when I was first listening to the writing playlist and checking out the lyrics. The "hard to find a feeling buried long ago" line especially jumped out at me as relevant, here, to Flowey finally breaking through the trauma- and grief-numbness after all this time since he first came to in the garden.
