The Shape of Home

Summary:

Married Supercorp. Two kids. Late-night longing. Kara being helplessly in love with Lena Luthor.
Basically domestic softness all the way down.

Lena Luthor needs her wife after an exhausting conference.

Notes:

Lately I’ve felt the need for a little emotional comfort and somehow ended up right back in my Supercorp headcanons.
This is one of my favorite fantasies: Kara and Lena years after canon — finally happily married, building a family together, and still hopelessly in love with each other.

Hope you enjoy

Work Text:

Kara was used to being alone with the kids. Putting them to bed while her CEO wife had to work late wasn‘t something that occurred often. Whenever possible Lena put her family first.

But sometimes she had to finish a project till late in the evening, or take part in a conference, staying away overnight, like now. The same went for Kara and her duties both as editor in chief and her activities as an accomplished hero. Though she had promised Lena that she would always wait for backup. And she did.

Both women had grown into their roles as mothers.

Still, accommodating the needs of a three-year-old and a baby at the same time was sometimes a challenge — even for Supergirl.

Lori had always been a quiet kid who loved to stare at her picture books longer than most kids, pointing out details, creating new stories from what she saw. Words also had a magical effect on her and not long ago she had figured out how to read on her own. Slowly but patiently, letter by letter, word by word - longing to discover all the secrets any book could hold for her.

Looking at her face, stern and focused, Kara saw so much of Lena in her. She resembled her on the outside with her the long black, softly curled hair, the pale skin, too.

Lori’s bright blue eyes - as was the love of telling and inventing stories, were all hers though.

Lexi, Lori‘s younger sibling, on the other hand was a very active child. Same eyes, but blond, unruly baby hair - that most of the time even after brushing it - stood in all directions, as unpredictable as her mind. Since her birth she had a habit of keeping her mothers on their toes. She loved to cause distractions and laugh at the mess she had just made. Lexi had started to crawl at seven months and it was only a question of weeks until these wobbly, cheeky legs would enable her to expand the scope of her chaos across the entire apartment.

Lena and Kara wondered how such a tiny body could cause so much chaos.

Lori and Lexi rarely wanted the same thing at the same time. Lori wanted Kara to read one of her books with her. Lexi was busy redecorating the nursery floor with paper scraps, and Kara had to perform a last-minute rescue mission to get the glue out of the baby’s hands before the situation got completely out of control. Not being the center of mother’s attention provoked Lori to turn up the volume of her little voice by the second, which irritated Kara’s already frayed nerves after a long day at work and nearly sixty-eight hours without her wife.

With Lena, parenting always seemed so much easier.

The only time all parts of the trio worked somewhat civilly together was during the shared meals.

Was Lena with them, there would be more healthy ingredients on the plates, but with her being out of the city the Kryptonian and her two half-alien kids enjoyed an unhealthy amount of sugar and butter with their dinner.

But thanks to Lena’s strict routine, even Lexi knew how to eat without making a mess.

Lori’s eating habits, were one of the main reasons Kara never doubted her parentage. From the start she was always hungry and though she ate her greens when she was old enough to, she soon discovered and fell in love with pizza, dumplings and other dishes that- according to Kara —were the only proper way to feed a Kryptonian.

"When does Mommy come home?" asked Lori while chewing on her second serving of pancakes.

"Soon, sweetie. She will be home, when you wake up," Kara answered carefully, knowing pretty well, that Lori didn’t like it when Lena wasn’t there to at least kiss her goodnight.

"I won’t sleep until she’s back,“ Lori stated, scrunching her nose that distinct way, that resembled her other mother‘s habit so much.
"That‘s ok, baby girl," Kara said, knowing that Lori wouldn’t be able to keep up that late.

Lena wouldn’t be home before midnight. Probably exhausted from the conference, that had occupied her for the last two days.

Without using the exact words Kara and Lena had promised to have each other’s backs at their wedding- and they did. They both valued the freedom to grow beyond the life they had built together.

But nights without Lena still felt just a little too quiet.

Bath time after dinner was a disaster, but the room looked impeccable shortly after, thanks to Kara’s abilities.

Now the two little monsters were in bed, Lexi lying on Kara’s torso, Lori right next to her, one small hand in Kara’s big one, softly snoring, hopefully dreaming sweetly.

Kara looked at her sleeping girls and smiled. This was the life Kara had once believed she would never have. Not after her home planet had been destroyed, not while trying to fit in on earth, being so different from the other teenagers, not when she never felt this specific connection to another person, the way it was portrayed in all those books and movies.

She had tried especially hard with Mon-El, knowing he was at least physically less destructible. Nowadays she had to laugh about that shortsighted and doubtful reasoning. For one Lena had come up with the idea of red sun lamps shortly after they started dating.

And now she carried this feeling of belonging inside her — something she had once believed was meant for other people, not for her.

She had planned to check her phone to see if Lena had texted her and to ask how she was doing and that she couldn’t wait for her to be back home.
But the smooth breaths of her kids, the soft baby skin of Lexis face next to her collar bone - and Lori’s small fingers, slowly losing their grip while falling deeper into slumber, made her sleepy too.

Her mind drifted to Lena.

To a time when all of this wasn’t just unimaginable, but seemed impossible.

There were still those days in August when Lena became quietly irritated and Kara knew that Lena was triggered and brought back to the moment, when her brother had told her Kara’s secret which had almost destroyed everything between them.

Kara knew and never doubted that Lena had forgiven her, as she had in return. They had said sorry countless times back then.

Something about the air in August still reminded Lena of how fragile life and truth could be. She had worked on her trauma with professionals, but some of it still lingered, sometimes.

It had no real impact on their lives. Kara just knew that some days during summer, Lena needed her love and patience a bit more than at other times.

The smell of Lena’s perfume guided Kara’s mind to peaceful place.

A memory of them dancing. Lena’s scent had a calming effect on her heart, but a different one on her body.

Her gorgeous Lena, who somehow only became more radiant with time. Carrying these perfect children.

Finding out that Lena was pregnant came as a surprise to Kara and a shock to Lena.

Looking at the positive results of five tests - later confirmed by Alex‘s examination, sent Lena almost into a panic attack.

Kara still processing the news herself, instantly reassured her: "There is an explanation for this. And if it’s true, whatever you choose - I am with you. 100 % percent. And if you want this, I know - you will be a wonderful mother. I know how powerful and safe it feels to be loved by you."

Of course Kara would have accepted every decision. Even if it wasn’t the one, she would have made herself.

In the end, Lena wanted to carry their baby. She never truly considered not to.

But she was not prepared back then. Being with another woman had never made her truly think pregnancy was something that could happen to her.
Though this wasn’t the whole truth either.

She had thought about children. Even before Kara and her had started their romantic relationship.

Whenever she had been with children, like when she visited the hospitals she supported, or the kids in her close circle - like Ruby and Esme - she enjoyed being with them. Their curiosity, their unhinged questions, their enthusiasm.

But being a mother? That was a thought she never allowed herself to hang on to. With her schedule, her responsibilities, the dangers Kara and she still faced regularly. Her upbringing, the Luthor name. So many reasons not to put a child of her own into the world.

But the idea that something of Kara was growing inside of her, mingled with something of herself, was mind-blowing.

The moment her heart stopped fearing it, it began to long for it instead — almost as overwhelmingly, almost as suffocatingly, as the fear had been before.
But she never regretted the choice that she made.

To feel new life growing inside of her was a gift. She had told Kara, that this was more magical than doing actual magic. Kara had felt it too whenever she listened to their baby’s heartbeat.

To Kara, Lena had seemed to glow throughout the entire pregnancy.

But to be honest - Lena’s body was a wonderland pregnant or not. Every year that passed, no matter how often Kara had touched and tasted her, Lena still felt like a wonder to her — something so precious, and so unbearably hot.

Especially clad in one of these breathtaking dresses she used to wear… Kara knew Lena loved to drive her crazy wearing them.

But Lena was also the person who challenged her more than anyone else — with her brilliance, her stubbornness, and the intensity with which she moved through the world, sometimes leaving little room for nuance or small miracles.

And yet, she remained the greatest miracle of all.

The one with whom she constantly uncovered new secrets of the world, whose compassion and relentless drive to improve life made Kara fall even more in love with her every single day.

And when Kara hugged Lena enthusiastically after she had said or done something especially lovable (like giving anonymously a billion to a hospital or even something so mundane as gifting Kara with a vanilla dipped donut) - Lena would melt every single time, almost in disbelief, and Kara wanted to marry her all over again right then and there.

Alex had said more than once that so many emotions couldn’t be healthy in the long run.

So far, Kara couldn’t agree. Kara had never felt so alive, so completely at home, as she had from the moment Lena first kissed her.

Kara felt lips on her temple. She sighed contently.

A soft voice murmured beside her ear: "Darling." Kara tried to open her eyes.

Lena was home.

***

The conference had been as almost as painful as Lena had predicted. She couldn’t count the times she was being mansplained about her own work on one hand.

The only light had been a particular workshop, including many very accomplished and bright women.

The men participating all had been either openly feminists themselves or at least very supportive of a scientific workspace that gave room to ideas rather than male egos.

Lena was still wearing her pencil skirt and blues, but had taken off her designer blazer the second she escaped the flashlights of the reporters that were waiting for her as usual - and had climbed the backseat of the car that had waited for her, in front of the conference center.

Her feet were killing her. She had taken of her Loubotins the moment she stepped into the apartment, both to free her toes, but mainly not to wake up her girls.

She had missed them terribly.

Crazy how you could crave some time without these bundles of energy, but miss their voices and looking at them the second they were out of sight.

Lena went straight to the children’s room, carefully tiptoeing on her feet.

Because as much as she missed them she didn’t want them to wake up.
Quite the opposite.

What she craved most right now was some time alone with her wife.

The door to the room, Lori and Lexi shared, was open. The silence was a perfect indicator that they were sound asleep.

When she looked through the open door her heart clenched. Her whole world was lying there snuggled up on a tiny twin sized bed.

Lena had built up one of the biggest tech corporations of this country and this world, she had fought aliens and saved millions of people with her knowledge, courage and money.
But this - her family was what she was really proud of.

At the center of it all - not just in this scene straight out of a painting - the love of her life - the person who rebuilt her trust in herself and in humankind, was Kara.

God, she loved that woman. And after two days of discussions, reporters, and carefully measured smiles, she wanted her with an intensity that almost hurt.

In her life, next to her through all the high and low notes of everyday’s challenges and extravagances.

And right now, she craved that woman as close to her body as possible.

Ever since leaving the conference, she had pictured her wife naked beneath her— like God — or Rao — intended it to be.

She longed for the strong arms of her wife holding her body, the confidence and love in her lover’s eyes, the physical reassurance that she was’t alone in this world, that she was wanted, she was protected, that she was loved.

Lena wanted to clear her mind of all the tiresome streaks left behind by social awkwardness - and traces of verbal attacks and assaults by wounded—mostly male—egos, which she had masterfully dispelled, yet whose venom had still settled on her thoughts in the form of fine dust particles seeping through narrow cracks.

Slowly and carefully she took her youngest from the arms of her sleeping mother and kissed her soft hair and put her into the crib, like she often used to.

Kara had a habit of falling asleep with her daughters.

Then she placed another soft kiss on the temple of her firstborn, before bowing down to her wife: "Darling", she said while caressing her strong shoulder tenderly with her fingertips, placing a kiss on her hero’s pulsepoint.

That was all it took to wake the blond from her slumber. "Babe, you are home," Kara whispered.

"Yes, I am."

"I missed you baby," Kara had some difficulties to open her eyes completely, especially because Lena kept on caressing her sensitive neck.

"I missed you too. Very much…. Come, get out of this bed…" Kara knew that tone, but instead of complying instantly lightly teased:
"I am so tired. But one more kiss and I'll find the strength.“

„You can have all the kisses and me, if you get up already," Lena repeated even more impatiently.

"Yes baby, just give me second," Kara smiled with relish, and started to move, showing of her toned arms and muscles abdomen.

The level of nervous energy emenitting from Lena climbed further, effecting Kara who suddenly couldn‘t stand up fast enough, kicking against a toy.

"Careful, you will wake them up," admonished Lena, a light flash of panic in her eyes.

"Not after what they did to the bathroom- they will sleep till lunch," Kara mumbled on her way out of the room.

As soon as they stepped onto the floor Lena was on Kara's lips.

"Missed you too," Kara managed to say, before her wife was on her again, already guiding them toward their bedroom as quickly as possible, driven by a desperate kind of need.

"Then stop talking and kiss me," Lena commanded.

Kara happily let herself be led, and when they reached the bed, she fell backward onto it with Lena immediately following her down. Lena never stopped kissing her, even while impatiently tugging at Kara’s clothes.

Looking down at Kara Lena repeated: "God. I missed you."

Kara challenged: "How much?"

"I will show you…" Lena guided Kara’s right hand slowly to her breast over her ribs, hips, down, under her slip.

"Oh." Kara’s brain wasn’t working properly anymore; want had completely taken over.

"You’re so wet."

"I was thinking of you. A lot…in the car… before," Lena whispered in Kara’s ear

and then: "I want you." "Then have me," was all that Kara could answer.

"I will," the hot breath against Kara’s ear feeling like a touch between her legs.

Slowly Lena started to grind on Kara’s leg, Kara’s hand still pressed to her clit. They both moaned.

"I was … thinking …. about you … too," the words came out in a stutter.

"Oh darling I can feel it. Your whole body tells me. Can I touch you?" Lena’s ability to keep talking while aroused had always seemed completely unfair to Kara.

She wasn’t even able to answer, overwhelmed by the touch, by feeling Lena’s body so intimate, her breasts pressed into her sternum, those lips at her ear.

All she could manage was to nod, and that’s what she did oh so willingly.

Lena loved to see her super captivated and completely devoted to her.

Whatever patience Lena had left finally snapped completely. "Fuck me, darling. I want to feel you inside of me.“

Kara, who was used to Lena’s orders in bed and happily followed all of them, did.

„Oh - yes - deeper, yes, like that, baby." The last words were said breathlessly. Lena‘s brain functions finally overridden by need and lust.

Lena crashed her mouth against Kara’s in sloppy, hungry kisses, tasting and biting without restraint while rocking against Kara’s fingers.

Kara’s free hand gripped Lena’s waist tightly, keeping her close, as Lena pressed herself down harder with every passing second.

Their breathing turned uneven, broken by quiet moans and breathless praise.

Kara’s hand now on Lena’s butt, guiding her movements, keeping her near.

"Love you, baby—oh, God—"
Those were the last recognizable words Lena managed before she pulled Kara over the edge with her, their bodies shaking together in a rhythm only lovers can dance to.

Sometime later, after many more kisses, tangled together beneath the sheets, they fell asleep.

The next morning, Lena woke to soft hands caressing her bare back. Shortly after, a small voice was calling for Mommy or Ieiu and Kara stepped out of bed, throwing some pants and a shirt over her body, going to bring Lexi over for morning cuddles, before she could wake up Lori —

and Lena knew.

She simply knew, putting on a nightgown herself, just like she had the second time it happened.

Their family was about to expand just a little further.
