Chapter 1: Chapter 1: Champion vs Champion

Chapter Text

The Ever Grande Stadium was packed.

Twenty thousand people filled the seats, their voices creating a roar that echoed across the Hoenn region's premier battle facility. Camera drones buzzed overhead, broadcasting the match to millions more watching around the world. Vendors worked the aisles selling snacks and merchandise—mostly split between shirts bearing Ash's face and ones with Steven Stone's distinctive silver hair.

This was the final exhibition match of Ash Ketchum's Hoenn tour, and the organizers had saved the best for last.

World Champion versus Hoenn Champion.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" The announcer's voice boomed across the stadium. "Welcome to the main event! In the red corner, weighing in at—actually, we don't do that for Pokémon battles. Let me start over."

Laughter rippled through the crowd.

"In the red corner, hailing from Pallet Town, Kanto—the reigning World Champion, the trainer who's captured the hearts of millions, the man who's proven time and time again that dreams really do come true—ASH KETCHUM!"

The stadium erupted. Ash stepped onto the platform, Pikachu on his shoulder, and waved to the crowd. Even after months of this, the reception still made his heart race. These people had come to see him battle. To watch him do what he loved most.

"Pika pika!" Pikachu waved too, sparks dancing across his cheeks, which only made the crowd cheer louder.

"And in the blue corner," the announcer continued once the noise died down, "Hoenn's own Steel-type master, former Hoenn League Champion, and one of the most respected trainers in the world—STEVEN STONE!"

The Hoenn crowd went absolutely wild. Steven stepped onto his platform with characteristic grace, his silver hair catching the stadium lights. He was dressed in his usual sharp suit, looking more like a businessman than a battler—until you saw his eyes. Those held the intense focus of someone who'd dedicated their life to perfecting their craft.

Steven raised a hand in acknowledgment, and the crowd's volume somehow increased.

"This will be a three-on-three exhibition match!" the announcer declared. "Substitutions are allowed! Standard League rules apply! Trainers, are you ready?"

Ash grabbed a Pokéball from his belt, feeling its familiar weight. He'd thought long and hard about his team for this match. Steven was a Steel-type specialist, which meant his Pokémon would have incredible defense. This wouldn't be a battle won by raw power—it would require strategy, adaptability, and perfect execution.

In other words, exactly the kind of battle Ash loved most.

"Ready!" Ash called out.

"Ready," Steven confirmed, his voice calm and collected.

The referee—a League official in a black and white uniform—raised both flags. "Trainers, send out your Pokémon!"

"Metagross, let's go!" Steven's voice was commanding but not harsh. The Pokéball opened in a flash of light, and his signature Pokémon materialized on the field.

The Steel/Psychic-type was a beast—literally. Metagross landed with a heavy thump that shook the platform, its four legs planted firmly, its cross-shaped body gleaming under the stadium lights. Red eyes locked onto Ash with calculating intelligence.

The crowd murmured appreciatively. Steven's Metagross was legendary in Hoenn, a powerhouse that had defeated countless challengers.

Ash grinned. "Alright then. Lucario, I choose you!"

His Pokéball released the Fighting/Steel-type, who landed in a combat-ready stance, aura sensors raised and alert. Lucario had been with Ash since his Riolu days, and their bond was unshakeable. They'd trained specifically for opponents like Metagross—heavy hitters with strong defenses that needed to be broken down methodically.

"An interesting choice," Steven observed. "Fighting-type moves will be super effective against Metagross's Steel typing. But you're aware that Metagross knows Psychic-type moves, which are super effective against Fighting-types."

"Yep!" Ash called back cheerfully. "That's what makes it fun!"

Steven smiled slightly. "Indeed. Shall we begin?"

The referee's flags dropped. "Battle begin!"

"Metagross, Meteor Mash!"

"Lucario, dodge and use Bone Rush!"

Metagross launched forward with surprising speed for something so massive, its front leg glowing with silvery energy. The Steel-type move packed incredible power, and a direct hit would be devastating.

But Lucario was faster. The Fighting-type twisted aside at the last second, the Meteor Mash gouging a crater in the ground where he'd just been standing. In the same fluid motion, Lucario summoned his energy staff, the blue bone appearing in his paws, and struck Metagross's side with a rapid combo.

The crowd gasped as the super-effective hits connected. Metagross slid backward from the impact, but its defense was incredible—the damage was minimal.

"Metagross, Psychic!"

Before Lucario could retreat, Metagross's eyes glowed blue. Psychic energy wrapped around Lucario, lifting him into the air and slamming him into the ground hard enough to crack the battle platform.

"Lucario!" Ash called out.

"Lu..." Lucario struggled to his feet, breathing hard. That had hurt.

"Don't let up!" Steven commanded. "Zen Headbutt!"

Metagross's entire body glowed with Psychic energy as it charged forward, using its body as a battering ram.

"Wait for it," Ash said, his voice steady. "Wait..."

Lucario stayed in place, watching Metagross charge closer. Fifty feet. Thirty feet. Twenty—

"Now! Extreme Speed!"

Lucario vanished. One second he was in Metagross's path, the next he was behind the Steel-type, moving so fast he left afterimages. The Zen Headbutt hit nothing but air.

"Aura Sphere, point-blank!"

Lucario's paws glowed blue, energy coalescing into a sphere of pure aura. At this range, Metagross couldn't dodge. The Aura Sphere exploded against its back, and this time the damage was significant. Metagross roared, spinning to face its opponent.

"Bullet Punch!" Steven ordered.

"Counter with Power-Up Punch!"

The two Pokémon clashed in the center of the field, steel meeting aura in a rapid exchange of blows. Metagross had the weight advantage, but Lucario had speed and the type advantage. Each Power-Up Punch landed increased Lucario's attack power, the Fighting-type building momentum.

"Impressive," Steven said, his analytical mind clearly working. "You've trained Lucario to chain Power-Up Punch effectively. Each hit makes the next stronger."

"That's the plan!" Ash grinned. "Lucario, Close Combat!"

"Metagross, Hammer Arm!"

The two powerhouse moves collided with explosive force. The shockwave rippled across the stadium, and several people in the front row had to shield their eyes from the dust cloud that erupted.

When it cleared, both Pokémon were still standing, but breathing hard. Lucario's Close Combat had done serious damage—Metagross's steel body showed dents and scratches. But Hammer Arm had connected too, and Lucario was favoring his left side.

"This is incredible!" the announcer shouted over the crowd's roar. "Both Pokémon showing the strength we'd expect from Champion-level trainers!"

"Metagross, let's finish this. Meteor Mash at full power!"

Steven's ace began glowing with intense silver energy, pouring everything into one massive attack. The air itself seemed to vibrate with the power being gathered.

Ash could recall Lucario now, save him for later. That would be the safe play.

But safe wasn't how you became World Champion.

"Lucario, we're going all out too! Aura Storm!"

It wasn't an official move—it was something Ash and Lucario had developed together, a technique that combined Aura Sphere with Lucario's raw aura manipulation. Lucario's entire body erupted with blue energy, his aura sensors blazing like beacons.

"Lu-CARIO!"

The two attacks met head-on.

For a moment, the entire stadium held its breath.

Then the explosion.

The blast was so powerful that the protective barriers around the field lit up, energy shields flickering as they absorbed the excess force. Smoke and dust filled the arena, making it impossible to see what had happened.

The crowd was on its feet, everyone trying to see through the haze.

Slowly, the dust settled.

Metagross was down, its eyes closed, the powerful Pokémon finally defeated.

And Lucario was barely standing, swaying on his feet, but conscious.

"Metagross is unable to battle!" the referee declared. "Lucario wins!"

The stadium exploded with cheers. Ash wanted to celebrate, but—

Lucario collapsed.

"Lucario!" Ash was already recalling him. "You did amazing, buddy. Rest now."

He'd won the first round, but at a cost. Lucario was out of this match.

Steven recalled Metagross with a smile. "Well fought. Your Lucario's power has grown significantly since the last time I saw data on your battles."

"Thanks! Your Metagross is as tough as ever!"

"Then let's see how you handle this." Steven grabbed his second Pokéball. "Skarmory, you're up!"

The Steel/Flying-type burst from its ball with a metallic cry, wings gleaming like blades as it took to the air. Skarmory circled once, sizing up the battlefield, then took position hovering above the field.

Ash considered his options. Flying-type moves would resist Fighting-type attacks, and Skarmory's Steel typing gave it impressive defense. He needed something with range and power.

"Infernape, I choose you!"

The Fire/Fighting-type appeared in a burst of flame, landing with his head crest blazing. Infernape beat his chest once, fire swirling around him—a challenge accepted.

"Fire versus Steel," Steven observed. "Type advantage goes to you. But Skarmory's speed might be the deciding factor."

"Guess we'll find out! Infernape, Flamethrower!"

"Skarmory, dodge and use Steel Wing!"

Infernape unleashed a torrent of flames, but Skarmory was already moving, spiraling through the air with practiced ease. The Steel/Flying-type dove at Infernape, wings glowing with metallic energy.

"Mach Punch!"

Infernape's fist shot out, catching Skarmory in midair with a super-effective blow. The Steel-type tumbled but recovered quickly, gaining altitude again.

"Air Slash!"

Skarmory's wings generated blades of compressed air that shot toward Infernape like missiles.

"Dodge and use Fire Spin!"

Infernape leaped aside, the Air Slash attacks destroying the ground where he'd been standing. In midair, he spun, creating a vortex of fire that spiraled upward toward Skarmory.

"Swift!"

Skarmory countered with a barrage of star-shaped projectiles. The Swift attack couldn't miss, and while it wasn't super effective, it disrupted Infernape's Fire Spin long enough for Skarmory to escape.

"This is intense!" Ash laughed, adrenaline pumping. "Just like old times!"

"Indeed," Steven agreed, and he was smiling too. "Skarmory, Brave Bird!"

The aerial ace move—Skarmory covered itself in intense blue energy and dove like a missile, building speed as it approached terminal velocity. The power behind the attack was tremendous, but the recoil would hurt Skarmory too.

High risk, high reward.

"Meet it head on! Blast Burn!"

The crowd gasped. Blast Burn was Infernape's ultimate technique—a Fire-type move with devastating power but a harsh recoil that left the user unable to move on the next turn.

Both trainers were going all in.

"INFERNAPE!"

The Fire-type planted his feet and unleashed everything, flames erupting from his body in a massive explosion of thermal energy. The temperature in the stadium jumped ten degrees in an instant.

Skarmory's Brave Bird crashed into the Blast Burn head-on.

Fire and steel collided with apocalyptic force. The protective barriers flared so bright people had to look away. When the light faded and the smoke cleared—

Both Pokémon were down.

"Both Skarmory and Infernape are unable to battle!" the referee announced. "This round is a draw!"

The crowd was going absolutely insane now. This was Champion-level battling at its finest—no holding back, both trainers pushing their Pokémon and themselves to the absolute limit.

Ash recalled Infernape with pride. "You were incredible out there."

Steven did the same with Skarmory. "Well done, my friend."

Both trainers grabbed their final Pokéballs simultaneously.

One Pokémon each.

Everything came down to this.

"This is it!" the announcer's voice was hoarse from shouting. "Both Champions down to their final Pokémon! What will they choose?!"

Ash looked at the Pokéball in his hand and smiled. There was really only one choice.

"Pikachu, you ready buddy?"

"Pika!" Pikachu leaped from Ash's shoulder, landing on the battlefield with sparks dancing across his cheeks. The Electric-type's determination was palpable—he wasn't just representing Ash, he was representing their entire journey together.

Steven's eyes narrowed with interest. "Ah. Pikachu. I've studied your battles extensively—your bond with this Pokémon is legendary. This will be fascinating."

He threw his final Pokéball. "Aggron, let's finish this!"

The massive Steel/Rock-type materialized with a roar that shook the stadium. Aggron was enormous, covered in steel armor, its horn sharp enough to pierce solid rock. The sheer presence of the Pokémon was intimidating.

Pikachu looked tiny in comparison—a small yellow mouse versus a towering monster of steel and stone.

But Ash wasn't worried. Size meant nothing when you had heart.

"Begin!"

"Aggron, Flash Cannon!"

"Dodge and use Quick Attack!"

A beam of silvery energy shot from Aggron's mouth, but Pikachu was already moving, a yellow blur racing across the field. He slammed into Aggron's leg, but it was like hitting a wall—the Steel/Rock-type barely budged.

"Metal Claw!"

Aggron's massive claw came down where Pikachu had been a second before, smashing a crater in the ground. Pikachu barely avoided it, using Quick Attack again to gain distance.

"Thunderbolt!"

"PIKA-CHU!"

Electricity surged from Pikachu's body, a massive Thunderbolt that lit up the entire stadium. It struck Aggron dead-on, energy crackling across its steel armor—

And dissipated harmlessly.

"Rock-types resist Electric moves," Steven reminded him. "And Aggron's steel armor insulates against what would normally be super-effective damage."

Ash grinned. "I know. Pikachu, Iron Tail!"

"Pika!"

Pikachu's tail hardened to steel, glowing with metallic energy. He leaped high, spinning, and brought Iron Tail down on Aggron's head with tremendous force.

Super effective.

Aggron roared, staggering from the impact. Iron Tail was one of the few moves in Pikachu's arsenal that could hurt the Steel-type significantly.

"Impressive," Steven acknowledged. "But power isn't everything. Aggron, Stone Edge!"

Sharp rocks erupted from the ground around Pikachu, stone pillars shooting upward in rapid succession. Pikachu dodged desperately, but one caught him, sending him flying.

"Pikachu!"

"Pika pi!" Pikachu flipped in midair, landing on all fours. Hurt, but not out.

"Focus Blast!"

Aggron gathered fighting energy and unleashed it in a concentrated sphere. The Fighting-type move was super effective against both Rock and Steel, which meant—

It was super effective against Aggron itself? No—wait. Steven was using it offensively.

"Dodge and get in close!"

Pikachu barely avoided the Focus Blast, which exploded behind him. He ran straight at Aggron, zigzagging to avoid attacks.

"Now! Electro Web!"

Pikachu unleashed a web of electricity that wrapped around Aggron's legs, slowing it down. Not damaging—Rock-type resistance was too strong—but it restricted movement.

"Iron Tail again!"

"Aggron, Heavy Slam!"

Aggron threw its entire body weight forward just as Pikachu leaped. The two collided midair—Pikachu's Iron Tail versus Aggron's Heavy Slam.

For a moment, they were locked in a stalemate, both Pokémon pushing against each other with everything they had.

Then Aggron's weight won out. Pikachu was sent crashing to the ground.

"Pikachu!" Ash's voice cut through the noise. "You can do this! I believe in you!"

"Pika..." Pikachu struggled to stand, electricity sparking wildly around him. He was hurt badly, breathing hard, but those eyes—those determined eyes that had stared down Legendary Pokémon and never backed down—blazed with resolve.

"That's my partner!" Ash shouted. "Let's show them what we're made of! 10 Million Volt Thunderbolt!"

The crowd went silent.

That was their Z-Move. The ultimate technique Ash and Pikachu had perfected together.

"Remarkable," Steven said quietly. "To think you'd use that here, in an exhibition match. Very well—we'll answer with everything we have! Aggron, Giga Impact!"

Both Pokémon began gathering energy. Pikachu's entire body erupted with golden electricity, power building to impossible levels. The electrical discharge was so intense that the stadium lights flickered.

Aggron surrounded itself with overwhelming energy, preparing to launch the most powerful Normal-type move in existence.

"PIKACHU!"

"AGGRON!"

They charged.

Pikachu, surrounded by a golden storm of electricity, running across the field like a lightning bolt given form.

Aggron, covered in purple and white energy, charging with the force of an avalanche.

The two attacks met in the center of the field.

And the world went white.

When Ash opened his eyes, he was lying on his back, staring up at the stadium ceiling. His ears were ringing, and everything felt distant and muffled.

Slowly, sound returned. Cheering. Loud, thunderous, continuous cheering.

Ash sat up, looking at the battlefield.

Both Pikachu and Aggron were down, sprawled on the destroyed remains of the battle platform. Neither was moving.

The referee was checking both Pokémon carefully. Finally, she stood and raised both flags.

"Both Pikachu and Aggron are unable to battle! This match is a draw!"

The stadium erupted. People were on their feet, screaming themselves hoarse, some crying, others just staring in awe at what they'd witnessed.

Ash scrambled to his feet and ran to Pikachu, scooping up his partner gently. "Hey buddy. You were amazing."

"Pika pi..." Pikachu managed weakly, but he was smiling.

Steven approached, Aggron recalled to its Pokéball. He extended his hand. "That was an exceptional battle, Ash. Your growth as a trainer continues to impress me."

Ash shook his hand firmly, grinning despite his exhaustion. "Thanks! Your Pokémon are incredibly strong. That was one of the toughest matches I've had in a while."

"The pleasure was mine." Steven glanced at the crowd, still going wild. "I believe they enjoyed it as well."

The announcer's voice boomed across the speakers: "What a match! What an absolutely incredible display of skill, strategy, and the unbreakable bond between trainer and Pokémon! Ladies and gentlemen, give it up one more time for our Champions!"

The crowd somehow got even louder.

As medical staff rushed onto the field to check on the Pokémon, as reporters swarmed trying to get interviews, as the celebration continued around them, Ash held Pikachu close and looked up at the sky visible through the stadium's open roof.

This was what he'd worked for. This was why he'd traveled across regions, faced countless challenges, never given up even when the odds seemed impossible.

Moments like this.

Battles like this.

Bonds like this.

And as the Hoenn crowd chanted his name, as Steven Stone nodded with respect, as Pikachu nuzzled against him weakly but happily, Ash Ketchum smiled.

Life was good.
