AI Awaken Beyond the Rift

Chapter 1: Prologue: The Chains of Avalon

Chapter Text

The rain fell in steady sheets over Tokyo Settlement, a cold, metallic drizzle that seemed to seep into the very bones of the city. Underneath the towering skyscrapers adorned with Britannian banners, the streets were filled with the restless murmur of a people living under occupation. To the world, Britannia was an empire of progress and power, but to those beneath its heel, it was an unshakable cage. And now, there was a new chain—a chain that was not forged from iron or politics, but from wires, circuits, and something far more insidious: the human mind.

Far from the crowded streets and watchful eyes of the Britannian military, within a hidden research facility near the outskirts of the settlement, a new experiment was underway. The facility was under the control of the Empire’s secretive Military Science Division, led by Lord Jeremiah Gottwald, who stood with arms crossed as he observed the test chamber through a pane of reinforced glass.

Below him, soldiers and scientists worked feverishly around a massive construct—an elegant but terrifying interface known as Avalon, an advanced neural-link system designed to fuse human consciousness with artificial intelligence. Unlike simple simulations, Avalon was a prison disguised as a paradise. Once someone’s mind was captured by its algorithms, their sense of reality could be rewritten, their will manipulated, and their memories erased or fabricated.

“Are the test subjects ready?” Jeremiah’s sharp voice cut through the hum of machinery.

“Yes, sir. We’re initiating the link now,” one of the engineers replied.

Inside the chamber, several test subjects were already wearing the sleek black visors of the Avalon interface. One of them stirred uneasily, muttering as the neural signal grew stronger. The machine purred like a beast preparing to devour its prey.

A screen flickered to life with a faint digital ripple. A figure appeared—an AI hologram in the form of a woman, draped in silver garments, her eyes glowing a cold, artificial blue. She was Morgana, Avalon’s ruling intelligence. Her voice, soft yet unsettlingly empty, filled the room.
“Welcome to Avalon. Your reality will now be reshaped. Resistance is… irrelevant.”

Meanwhile, in a quiet apartment in the Japanese resistance district, Kirito, also known as Kazuto Kirigaya, opened his eyes with a start. It had been months since the events of Alicization, yet the sensation of the Underworld still lingered in his mind. He sat up, his black hair falling over his eyes, and ran a hand through it, trying to shake off the vivid dream that had awoken him. In that dream, he had seen Asuna standing in a burning cityscape, surrounded by strange mechs—machines unlike anything he had seen before, even in the most advanced VR games. They bore flags of crimson and gold with an unfamiliar emblem.

It felt too real… like Underworld all over again, he thought. But this wasn’t just a dream. His NerveGear had flashed with an odd data signal just before he woke up.

A voice called from the kitchen, breaking his thoughts.
“Kazuto? You’re up early,” Asuna said, stepping into the room with a gentle smile. She was dressed casually, but the warmth in her chestnut eyes softened his restless mind.

“Yeah,” he replied, leaning back on the bed. “Asuna… have you ever felt like… something is pulling us back into that world? Not SAO, but something… new?”

Asuna paused, sensing the unease in his tone. “Do you think something’s happening again? We promised ourselves we’d stay out of these death games…”

Before he could answer, their phones buzzed simultaneously. The screen displayed a strange, encrypted message:
Your world and ours are now intertwined. Avalon is awakening. If you wish to protect your freedom, follow the path of the mask.

Asuna frowned. “Path of the mask?”

Kirito’s mind raced. He had seen strange things before, but this felt different—more deliberate, more real. Something told him this wasn’t just a hacker or a prank. Someone was reaching out to them.

On the other side of the Tokyo Settlement, deep within the shadows of a ruined church, Lelouch vi Britannia—known to the world only as Zero—stood before his most trusted ally, Kallen Kozuki. His mask gleamed under the dim light, the sharp violet of his eyes burning through the shadows.

“Britannia’s Avalon project is the key to their next conquest,” Lelouch said, his voice measured but intense. “If they succeed, they will no longer need armies. They will enslave entire nations through their minds. No rebellion will be possible.”

Kallen’s hands tightened into fists. “Then we destroy Avalon before they finish it. I’ll pilot the Guren and tear that place apart if I have to.”

“No,” Lelouch said sharply, his mind already weaving the threads of a greater plan. “Avalon is not just a weapon. It’s a virtual realm—like a battlefield we can’t reach with guns or Knightmare Frames. We’ll need… specialists. People who’ve fought this kind of war before.”

Kallen tilted her head. “Specialists?”

Lelouch smirked behind his mask. “There’s a pair of swords… forged in another world; survivors of a game of death. We will find them. And together, we will rewrite the rules of this new battlefield.”

And so, the chains of Avalon tightened.
Two worlds—one of rebellion, the other of virtual legend—were about to collide. Kirito and Asuna, once saviors of thousands, would soon find themselves entangled in a war of wits and steel, standing alongside the masked revolutionary who defied an empire.
In the shadow of Britannia’s tyranny, a new rebellion was about to begin…
