Can I have a gin and tonic with ice?

Summary:

What if Kurt knew Sebastian way before he met him for the first time at the Lima bean? And what if the two of them had been closer than ever before Sebastian had to leave for France? And what if Quinn was the shoulder Kurt could always lean on?

Or

Chapter Text

He had been in America for three months when he got a spot in the warblers. Singing and dancing wasn't his first choice of extracurricular, but his parents wanted him to do more than to just play as captain on the lacrosse team.

This was his second time attending Dalton. Just before he moved he went here. He didn't feel the need to do anything more than to play lacrosse, and he was good at it too. The coaches had let him back on the team with pleas from the team. They knew how good he was.

Trent had welcomed him into the group with open arms. He didn't really get the whole being a warbler, pop songs, no trash talk kind of way they were portraying themselves as. Because it was bullshit. Behind closed doors they trash talked anyone who walked through those doors.

He had first been uncomfortable by how strict they were when doing rehearsals and performing at the school. But once they closed the doors and Wes knocked the gavel against the table, Sebastian changed his mind about them.

"First things first. Sebastian, how the fuck did you do that backflip so smoothly?" Wes asked in disbelief.

"Been doing them since like a year ago." Sebastian shrugged. "I had a very sexy French teacher, and I wanted to impress and score." He winked and the warblers chuckled at the statement.

"We lost one of our top singer's this year, and we need to rearrange the group so we can win sectionals." Wes told the group.

"Who did we lose?" Sebastian questioned.

"Blaine Andersson, he was a captain last year." Trent told him. "He had moved here the year after you left and then-"

"He went after his fine ass boyfriend to public school." Thad added. Sebastian glanced between the boys that spoke up. "I would've done the same."

"I'm just shocked Kurt went for him out of all of us." David sighed. Sebastian furrowed his brows.

"I'm confused. Do we like this Blandersson person or not?" He asked the group.

"We like him, at least his voice and his presence in the group. But he was quite manipulative and always got his way. That's why he was one of the youngest captains we've had in years." Wes told him.

"He likes the attention, he wants to be in the center of attention." Trent added. "If he got the attention he wanted he might come back." Trent turned to Wes.

"And how do you propose we do that?" Wes questioned.

"Sebastian." Trent told him simply. Sebastian glanced at his teammate.

"Excuse me?" Sebastian asked in a scoff.

"He doesn't know that we have a new teammate and wants to know everything." Trent shrugged. "And we all know that Sebastian's flirtation game is off the charts." He added with a smirk.

"So, you want me to flirt with a guy that I know has a boyfriend? Who we all like?" Sebastian questioned. "I can't do that to Kurt.."

"Basically, yes." Trent said. "You won't have to actually do anything, you know."

The group agreed in unison that Sebastian would be their secret weapon to get back one of their best voices.

Kurt stepped into the lima bean, sighed as he stepped up to the counter. They had changed the menu once again. Everytime he had started to enjoy an item, they removed it. He shook his head and went for the safe bet of a vanilla latte. It wasn’t his favorite but Rachel had gone on his last nerve and he needed a pick-me up.

The barista wrote his name on the cup and told him to wait further down. He nodded and smiled as he put a few bucks in their tip jar. They were always so kind to Kurt everytime he went there, so he thought; why not give some kindness back?

Blaine had been acting awfully weird lately. Ever since he had gone to Dalton to give the Warblers the tickets. He had at first thought it was nothing, the warblers were like Blaine’s second home. It had been Kurt's second home once too. But there was something different this time around when he came back to school. There was something he couldn’t put his finger on.

“A vanilla Latte for Kurt.” The barista called out, breaking him from his thoughts.

“Thank you.” He smiled and turned around to find a table to sit at.

“When I lived in paris-” Kurt heard in the distance. He scanned the tables to find the voice. “When you lived in-” He finally found the table he was looking for. He saw a boy with an overly gelled head of hair and a boy with a dalton blazer.

“Look, Sebastian, I have a boyfriend.” He heard Blaine say. Kurt scoffed at the words. You don't sound so sure about that, Blaine. Coffee with Wes.. What a liar. Kurt thought to himself.

“Doesn't bother me if it doesn't bother you.” Sebastian smiled. Kurt pressed his lips into a straight line.

“No, I mean, I really care about him.” Blaine tried again. Kurt sighed, this was going nowhere.

“He doesn’t need to know.” Sebastian told him in a smug tone. That’s when Kurt had had enough. He started walking towards the table, pretending he hadn’t heard the entire conversation.

“I just - Never want to mess my thing up with him. In any way. He’s really great.” Blaine stuttered. He noticed that Sebastian had started getting to him. More than usual. Kurt knew Blaine was weak when it came to flirting and hot guys, but come on. They met yesterday.

“Who's really great?” Kurt spoke up as he reached the table. Blaine jumped slightly and glanced up at him. Kurt’s eyes were stuck on Sebastian. He glanced down at Blaine for a split seconds before locking eyes with Sebastian.

“I- You.” Blaine burst out, followed by a nervous laughter. Kurt saw how Sebastian tensed up as he let his eyes travel over his body. “We were just talking about you.” Blaine's nervous voice continued. Kurt saw how Sebastian swallowed slowly and eyed his body. There it was. The fire. The dark dark green in his eyes.

“Sebastian, this is Kurt.” Blaine introduced them. “My boyfriend.” He felt Blaine grab his hand. Sebastian let a smile that lit up the room fall onto his lips before he let out a chuckle. This was ridiculous.

“Right.” Sebastian said firmly, never letting the smile leave his lips.

“-Who I was just-” Blaine continued. Kurt mentally slapped him.

“Got it.” Sebastian tried to get Blaine to stop talking.

“Wow.” Blaine sighed. Didn’t plan this did you, Blaine? Kurt thought. Sebastian glanced down at Kurt’s outstretched hand. Oh, so we’re doing this? Kurt tightened his jaw and forced a smile. You’re on. He saw how tense he was. It was probably not in Sebastian’s plan either for him to show up. Sebastian grabbed Kurt’s pale hand.

“Pleasure.” Kurt smirked. Sebastian couldn’t form any words as their skin touched. Kurt wanted to play the game.

"The pleasure is all mine." Sebastian smirked.

Kurt rolled his eyes and turned to Blaine. “And how do we know Sebastian?” He asked and heard Sebastian scoff on the other side of the table.

“We met at dalton.” Sebastian spoke up tensely. Kurt scoffed at his comment.

“I asked Blaine, Bas.” Kurt smirked and sat down. Sebastian scoffed and licked his lips.

“He looked at a loss for words, I was just helping him out, babe.” Sebastian winked as Kurt sat down.

“Don’t call me that, Bas.” Kurt told him.

“Then don’t use that nickname, babe.” Sebastian smirked.

“Bas? Babe? Wha- what's going on here?” Blaine asked in confusion.

“You were so keen to talk before so why don’t you tell my boyfriend what’s going on here.” Kurt smiled. Blaine glanced between them. Kurt knew he had come back this fall. His dad had told him. He thought he would hear it from Sebastian himself, but apparently the little cocky bastard still lived inside the warbler.

Sebastian broke eye contact with Kurt and turned to Blaine. “We grew up together.” He said softly. “ Harmless .” Harmless. Yeah, okay, harmless, if you want to call it that. Blaine smiled and he glanced at his boyfriend who smiled back at him.

“Harmless, Blaine.” Kurt reassured him. A harmless summer filled with everything not harmless.

“You got yourself a boyfriend, did you?" Sebastian asked in fluent french before he took a sip of his coffee.

“I couldn’t wait around for someone that disappeared without a trace. ” Kurt shot back in french. “ Could I, Bas?” He added and licked his lips.

You know what that nickname does to me, sweetheart ,” Sebastian smirked and sent Kurt a wink. Kurt sat there frozen. This wasn’t supposed to happen. He was supposed to stay in France and never come back.

"You were supposed to stay in Paris." Kurt said shortly, retorting back to English. "I told you to leave."

Sebastian stood breathing heavily in front of Kurt. This fight wasn't supposed to break them. It wasn't supposed to do anything . They were supposed to be Kurt and Sebastian, forever.

"You can't do that." Kurt whispered.

"I can't do what? Love you?" Sebastian scoffed. He let his arms fall against his body. That’s all he ever wanted to do. Love Kurt. Be loved by Kurt. Sebastian put his hand over his mouth, trying to cover his harsh breathing.

"You can't say that you love me and then leave me like it's nothing." Kurt pushed him roughly and Sebastian grabbed ahold of his arms. Holding him close.

"I don't have a choice. You know that." Sebastian told him, searching for something in his eyes. Something that told him that this wasn’t it. That this wasn’t ruining them.

"You do have a choice." Kurt corrected him and pulled himself away from the body he wanted to hold him.

"It's not that easy." Sebastian whispered.

"But leaving me is?" Kurt let out a broken laugh. "You know what?" He wiped away the unshed tears. "Just leave. Forget I ever existed."

Kurt waited for a response and turned to leave. The rain was pouring down on them. Sebastian grabbed a hold of Kurt's hand. "Leaving you will be the hardest thing I'll ever have to do."

"And yet, you're still doing it." Kurt whispered and pulled away his arm. He broke down crying as he ran away.

"Plans change." Sebastian frowned and shrugged. Plans did change. All the time. Just like they had done that summer. Kurt had been heartbroken for weeks. Quinn had been the only one that could pull him out of the heartache that the french boy had caused him. The three of them had grown up together. They basically had done everything as if they were attached by the hip.

He's not actually your boyfriend, is he?” Sebastian asked in scoff and glanced at Blaine with a smile. The French was making Blaine more irritated by the second.

Everyone thinks we are together. I just play along .” Kurt sighed as he shrugged. He had never liked lying to the person in front of him. “ What if he was? Jealous?” He tilted his head in question.

Does he know that this is just a game? ” Sebastian smirked and gestured to Blaine but kept a harsh glare towards Kurt.

“English please.” Blaine spoke up in a sigh. Kurt turned to Blaine in shock, not prepared that he was going to speak. He shook his head and stood up.

“I- I shouldn’t have come here.” Kurt said and picked up his bag. “I’ll text you later.” He added and walked away, not specifying who he was going to text later.

He hurried out to his navigator and closed the door with a slam behind him. This was not what he was expecting when he walked into the lima bean today. He wasn’t prepared for his heart to be ripped out of his chest. Kurt had kept his cool, been the tonic to his gin. Just like old times.

You’re the tonic to my gin, babe. Gin on its own is disgusting, but a good gin and tonic hits different” Sebastian had smiled as they drove through the town. Quinn had popped her head to the front.

“What about me, Bas?” Quinn smiled.

“You’re the ice, gorgeous. You keep us cool.” Sebastian winked and grabbed Quinns hand and kissed it gently. “Gin and tonic with ice, please.” He added and the three of them laughed.

In that moment, in that exact moment as Sebastian drove through their hometown, that’s when Kurt felt complete. With his best friends.

He picked up his phone and dialed the only number he could think of. His trembling hand put his phone to his ear.

“Kurt?” Quinn answered. “What’s up?”

“Gin- He- I- Lima Bean- Blaine-” Kurt struggled getting the words out.

“Slow down. Kurt. Please, I can’t understand you.” Quinn said through the phone.

“He’s back, Quinn. He’s back from France.” Kurt got out.

“Shit.” She swore. “I’ll meet you at your house.” She said and hung up. Kurt nodded and took  a few deep breaths before turning the key and driving away.

Quinn got to the Hummel's first and she opened the door with her spare key. She knew that this would be a disaster from start to finish. Kurt had settled for Blaine. He was somewhat happy now. It had gone one full year since they had seen the third person in their trio. Or even heard from him. He had gone A-wall. Kurt was happy now, he couldn’t ruin that.

“Quinn, darling. I haven’t seen you in a while.” Caroline called out as she saw the blonde entering the kitchen.

“Carole.” Quinn smiled and walked over to hug her. She had dated her son, but she was first and foremost Kurt’s friend. Best friend. Screw Rachel Berry. She would if she could - beside the point. Quinn loved Carole like she was her own mother. She had been there for her when she needed a mother figure the most.

“How are you? What are you doing here?” Carole asked as they let each other go.

“I’m good. Cheerios practice is kicking my A-S-S. But it keeps me in shape.” Quinn shrugged. “I’m here in a bit of an emergency.” She scrunched her nose. “He’s back.” Carole’s eyes widened. She had known about everything that had happened that summer, so she knew exactly what she meant by him . “And Kurt is freaking out.” She added and walked over to the freezer and opened it.

“Top drawer.” Carole told her without glancing back. “Behind the frozen pizza, in the frozen peas bag.” She guided her.

“Ah, there.” Quinn got out the bag and threw it away. She uncovered a bottle of gin. “Knew he still had it.” She muttered.

“He hasn’t touched it in a while.” Carole told her. Quinn looked down at the bottle and saw the label. The label that Sebastian had to have on the bottle when they were printing labels for fun at Quinn’s summer job.

Gintastic,

tastes of skinny dipping

and long drives to nowhere

"He hasn't had a reason to." Quinn sighed. She grabbed the towel in front of her and a couple of glasses. "I'll wait for him in his room." And started to walk away.

"You have school tomorrow." Carole called after her.

"You know we're responsible." Quinn said and walked back to kiss her on her cheek. "Thank you for looking after us." Before running upstairs.

Kurt drove slowly home, he couldn't get himself to speed. He turned the radio on to let it take over his thoughts, but then a familiar tune came on and his thoughts clouded his mind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Txq-8GBDdPA

They had just finished a walk to remember and Sebastian glanced outside. The rain was pouring down. "Let's go out."

"Bas, it's pouring down." Kurt told him.

"So? It's in the middle of the summer, it's gonna be warm." Sebastian said as he tugged on Kurt's hand. "I'll be your Landon Carter."

"That would mean that I'm the one dying." Kurt sighed and rolled his eyes.

"But I'm the bad boy and you're the ‘too good for this world’ boy." Sebastian smirked and winked at him. "Come on, we can dance in the rain." He tugged on his hand and pulled him out of bed with a sigh.

"Fine, fine." Kurt sighed and gave in. He did think it sounded like a sweet idea. He just didn't want to give Sebastian the satisfaction of being right.

They ran out of Sebastian's house barefoot and spun around in the rain. "This is amazing." Sebastian called out in glee.

Kurt glanced at him in laughter. "Yeah, it really is." He told him. "Summer rain is the best."

"No." Sebastian said and walked closer to Kurt. "I mean this. Us. You and me." He smiled.

"What- what do you mean, ba-" Kurt started but was cut off by Sebastian's lips on his. They had kissed before, it's what Sebastian did when he was drunk; He kissed Kurt.

Something about this time was different. It could've been the setting. It could've been that there was no alcohol involved. It could've been the pure need of having another person so close that you could feel their heart beating on your heart. But it wasn't.

Their lips moved together like they had been doing it for years. Kurt's skin vibrated against Sebastian's. They held each other, not wanting to let go until they had to. When they had to come up for air their eyes caught each other.

Sebastian looked frightened. Like he had destroyed everything with one simple kiss. Kurt was his savior, the one that understood him more than anyone else. He searched for the sign that it was okay in Kurt's eyes, but it was lost in the confusion that clouded his iris.

"I-.." Sebastian tried to form a sentence but it died as quick as the words formed in his head.

Kurt stood there in Sebastian's embrace; scared and confused as to what would happen next. The boy in front of him was the boy he had known for years.

"I- I have to go." Kurt said after a while. Not really knowing where to go. He pushed away from Sebastian's embrace and turned to walk away from him.

"Kurt. Wait." Sebastian called out after him. Kurt walked away with pain in his heart. "Please. Kurt." Sebastian was panicking. "I love you, damn it." He exclaimed, which made Kurt stop dead in his tracks.

The song stopped and the radio announcers started talking about their day. Kurt zoned them out and parked his car outside of his house. He sighed and fiddled with the keys.

He should be happy that he's back. He wanted him to come back for so long, but now that it was actually happening and it was his reality; he panicked.
