Chapter Text
Popsicles
“Tobio!” Miwa called from the kitchen, as Kageyama blearily opened his eyes from his spot on the carpeted floor. “What is it nee-san..?”
He heard footsteps approaching his door, as it was slammed open. Miwa, his older sister was standing, lips pursed and her hands on her hip,
“Tobio, you can't just sleep all day just because it's Sunday. Why don't you go practice or something? Usually you're bending over backwards trying to practice Volleyball every waking second.”
Kageyama grumpily sat up, groaning in annoyance, “Captain said that Karasuno’s court is being deep cleaned or something. And..Hinata has gone out with his family.”
“Well then, if you have nothing better to do, why don't you go to the convenience store and pick some stuff up for me?”
Kageyama contemplated it, on one hand it was sickeningly hot outside, but he should at least get out of the house. It probably wasn't healthy to laze around all day.
“Alright, I guess. What do you need nee-san?”
“Instant ramen, Mochi flour and.. popsicles, whatever flavour you want, and don't buy anymore milk, we have way too much already.” Miwa then left briskly, shutting the door on the way out.
Kageyama reluctantly got dressed up, the heat making him feel woozy. He just put on a pale blue t-shirt, and a pair of black joggers. He shoved some money into his wallet and left to go to the convenience store, four blocks down.
Entering the store through the automated doors, the cool A/C air hit his face as a refreshing feeling spread over him. He faintly heard someone welcoming him as he entered.
Kageyama quickly got the two things that he needed. The only thing left was the popsicles. He walked over to the frozen isle, as he stood in front of the freezers unsure of which flavor popsicles to get.
“Tobio-chan!” Kageyama froze as he heard the all too familiar voice behind him. He gulped, trying to convince himself that he had misheard, and that it was someone else.
“Kawa, stop shouting public”
Kageyama could practically feel his instincts telling him to run, but he steeled himself, so as to turn around, and sure enough his former upperclassmen were standing there, presumably also doing Sunday shopping.
He mentally prepared himself, repeating in his mind like a mantra that ‘it's fine’, and that he wasn't the same person he was three years ago.
Kageyama bowed slightly, “Hello, Oikawa and Iwaizumi-san.”
Oikawa smirked slightly, the same one that he had seen directed towards him one too many times. It promptly sent chills down his spine.
“Tobio-chan~ Long time no see, I must say, I’m surprised to see you here. I thought that you would be practicing, especially after..our last game.”
Iwaizumi smacked the taller brunette on the back of his head.
“Shittykawa, can't you control your tongue. Sorry about him Tobio. How’re you doing?”
Kageyama felt a twisted sense of familiarity, as he watched the scene unfold. “I’m doing good and,” he could feel his throat getting dry,
“I..uh..think I have to go I think.”
He could feel a blush creeping up his neck and he cleared his throat, avoiding Iwaizumi-san’s questioning gaze.
He pulled the freezer door, grabbing two random flavors, shoving it into his shopping basket as he walked as fast as was humanly possible to the checkout line.
The two upperclassmen were left slightly stunned as he had basically ran away from them. Iwaizumi shared a look with Oikawa, slightly confused at Tobio’s strange reaction.
“Trashykawa, I think you scared him away.”
Oikawa rolled his eyes, “Yeah, yeah, whatever. I honestly thought he changed but I guess not. He's still the fumbling little kid he was three years ago.”
“Kawa, stop acting like you're not the whiniest person I know.”

Kageyama paid the cashier, who frankly looked a bit concerned for him. It makes sense as he probably looked like he had just run a marathon. He didn't even bother to take the change. He just wanted to get out of that building as fast as he could.
He was already feeling lightheaded from the heat, and this unexpected encounter wasn't helping his situation.
He reached his house, kicking off his shoes as he dropped his plastic bag on the dining table. He ran up the stairs and into his room, shutting the door.
Kageyama flopped on the bed, breathing heavily. His neck and face was flushed as he tried to calm his thumping heart.
He thought that this…whatever this was..had stopped.
Even after playing against them at the Spring Tournament, he had been able to steer his mind clear of…those thoughts.
But after today-after seeing them up close and talking with them-it came crashing upon him again like a tidal wave. Everything that he had buried deep down, had come boiling up to the surface.
Kageyama’s feelings went beyond physical attraction. There was no doubt, ofcourse, that both of them were attractive.
Oikawa's smile, soft brown hair, smooth pickup lines and Iwaizumi’s gruff voice, piercing green eyes, strong arms would have any high school girl swooning.
In middle school, Kageyama’s admiration for his upperclassmen, had blossomed into a crush. He hadn't quite realized the extent of his feelings until Oikawa and Iwaizumi had graduated from Kitagawa Daichi.
He didn't want to explore what those confusing feelings meant, but regardless it was useless to wallow in self-pity, as he knew their fates were simply…not entangled together.
