Chapter Text
It was as though the events of the day caught up with her and her legs finally gave way. She lowered herself gingerly onto the platform in front of the Arc.
The light of her life.
Ava.
The love of her life.
Ava.
Gone.
Ava.
She had realized it all too late.
Ava.
“I love you.”
She whispered to herself again in a daze. She kept waiting for the pain to kick it but she was oddly free of pain. Any sort of pain.
Is this what being numb feels like?
“Because things change when you realize not everything is about you.”
Ava.
“I’m sorry, Bea.”
Ava met Beatrice’s gaze straight on. The amount of pain in those brown eyes rendered her speechless.
“But that’s the Warrior Nun’s job right? They die so that everyone else can live.”
Ava.
“Ava, don’t.”
“I’m doing this so you can live your life. So, live it. Okay?”
Ava.
“I won’t.”
“I can’t.”
Beatrice was fighting every instinct inside her to grab Ava and run. Regret bubbled inside her as the memory of Ava asking her to run away with her back to the Alps welled to the surface. She knows deep down when they did not find the Arc at the South Annex that Ava was pulling a Shannon.
“You can.”
Ava was resolute in her belief that this plan of hers would save the world. Her world. Beatrice.
“I can’t.”
Beatrice made a sloppy attempt to grab the Crown. Ava sidestepped, captured the offending hand and pulled her close. In a swift motion, she leaned in and kissed her.
Ava.
Beatrice feels like she is no longer sitting in front of the Arc but a mere spectator of her own memory of what had happened.
No, stop her you idiot. STOP HER. Stop looking at her all wide eyed, kiss her back. This is the only chance you get.
She began yelling at the Beatrice she is looking at in her memory.
Ava.
Kissing Ava was like coming home after a long day. Beatrice finally understands what home meant. Being kissed by Ava on the other hand, felt like Ava was wrapping herself around her. The love she held poured off her in waves. Warm and protective. Beatrice never needed to be protected, being an accomplished strategist and martial artist has rendered that need moot. Yet, in that kiss, she had never felt more protected in her entire life. She knew there and then that Ava would burn the world down and risk it all just to protect her.
Ava.
She could almost feel it. That last kiss Ava planted on her forehead. So soft. So final.
“In the next.”
Ava breathed out. Her voice broke as she tried to keep herself together before phasing into the ground.
Ava.
Her memory fast forwarded. The fight to Ava in the basement. Watching Ava detonate the Divinium in a dead Miguel. Feeling her heart stopped when the shards of Divinium pierced her.
“I love you.”
She whispered again.
“Let me go.”
Ava looked at her. Beatrice could see the amount of pain she was in. She could see the love Ava has for her. She could also see Ava’s heart breaking because she knew what was coming.
“Be free.”
She steeled herself.
Ava looked at her. In that split second, Beatrice prayed to every divine being she has ever known existed for a way to keep the woman in front of her. To be able to hold Ava in her arms for a while longer. She stroked her cheek, a reminiscence of their earlier kiss.
“I love you.”
Ava sobbed out as she leaned back into the portal. Stunned, Beatrice’s hold loosened and Ava disappeared to the other side.
“I love you.”
Beatrice breathed out. But it was too late.
Ava.
“I’m doing this so you can live your life. So, live it. Okay?”
Ava’s voice rang in her head again.
Ava.
How do I even begin to live my life when my world is gone. Where do I even start?
Beatrice thought of Madrid and how Ava was all excited about visiting the various attractions in the city. She thought about how Ava tried to sneak tourist attractions into their finding Mother Superion and Camilla.
Ava.
“I love you.”
She whispered again even though she knows Ava could no longer hear her. She had missed her chance.
Ava was gone, but the words live on and they never go away.
