It’s different, Mel realises. A heavy feeling in her chest, pressing down on her just as surely as she presses down on the energy contained between her palms. Caitlyn hovers across from her, newly ascended – still more idea than law, a concept created by mortals. Mel can see the echoes of that idea in the wisps of her half-formed body – partnership, understanding, compromise, but also anger restrained for when compromise fails.
Caitlyn is a new type of law, and Mel, who has existed before land and seas bore life into the world can’t help but marvel at the possibilities revealed by her ascendance.
The energy in her hands pulses once and Mel feels as it pushes against her, struggling to break free, but she’s done this many times before and her hands stay as they are, unmoving. Then, release. She holds up the newly formed star to Caitlyn who leans forward, eyes wide and curious. That’s when Mel feels it again, the pressure.
Caitlyn’s eyes are as blue as the star she just formed, or the star she just formed is the same hue as Caitlyn’s eyes. Mel releases the star when those eyes meet her own. It drifts away, as they always do, off to find its own space in the universe. Mel watches Caitlyn who watches the new star and feels herself changing.
