It's a Matter of the Winds

Summary:

Link blinked, this Vaati guy looked kinda evil, but he was a wind mage and he kinda needed and actual tutor...

Notes:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY VIO! Hope you like this! <3

Work Text:

Link honestly had no idea what to think about the new ghost that decided to follow him home after his adventure through time.

It was one of the Smithy's ghosts, he was sure of it. The Hero of Winds could remember this purple haired ghost just about cackling every time the shortest member of their group faced any kind of minor inconvenience, or how he grumbled in annoyance when Four's luck continued to be good. Which, thanks to being the Hero of the Minish along with the Hero of the Four Sword, meant that this ghost had been grumbling at the Smithy a lot

Under normal circumstances, Link would have been willing to leave the ghost be. The most this ghost really seemed to want was to cast minor misfortune upon people. Something that, much to the ghost's displeasure, was very much unable to do. He wasn't actually hurting anyone, and overall seemed unable to. Hell, Link was sure that he hadn't even noticed that he could see him yet. But for some reason, Link couldn't seem to just let the ghost be.

Luckily, or maybe unluckily, the ghost didn't want to let Link be either. Following him as he traveled on Tetra's ship, and around any island that he happened to be on. Offering up a sarcastic commentary on Link's daily life that would have made the Veteran proud, but instead left Link trying not to laugh.

For a few months things stayed like that. Link continued on with his normal life, sailing with Tetra and her Crew, helping out in various islands when needed, and over all continuing to look for a place to rebuild the once great country now sucken beneath the waves. All the while, a purpled-haired ghosted followed him around for seemingly no reason than he was the most interesting thing going on, offering commentary and minor ill-wishes all the while.

At the very least, Link was glad that he was alone when this ghost finally said something that actually made him want to talk to him.

"Even if this sailor knows wind magic, it's still nothing compared to what I would be able to kick up."

"Wait, you knew wind magic when you were alive?"

" Frick, you can hear me?!?! "

"I can see you as well, but more importantly, did you just use Frick? "

"Yes, unlike some people , I have standards. I won't sully my mouth like you pirates do."

The ghost rolled his eyes at Link’s attempts to restrain his laughter.

“But to answer your question that so rudely startled me,” the ghost sighed, “Yes, I was quite talented at wind magic back before I was slain. I once was capable of much more than the small feats you are able to achieve with that children’s toy of Channeling baton.”

Link, finally having managed to calm his laughter, was actually interested. Other than the few gods he’s met, he’s never really met anyone else that was able to use, or had once used, wind magic. Even if this guy very clearly had the biggest ego, there was still a chance that he might be able to learn from them. But, knowing these kinds of people, just asking him outright wouldn’t work. No, Link needed to get this guy to offer to teach him a few things.

Link smirked, a plan coming into form inside his head.

“Oh really? How come I’ve never heard of you then?”

The effect Link’s words had on this ghost were perfect. Near instantaneously, the ghost's vision snapped to Link, and his expression was near appalled, as though the sentence had given him a great offense.

“Surely you have heard the tales of the Great Wind Mage Vaati?”

Oh yea, Link thought, Four mentioned this guy a few times.

“Nope, not ringing any bells.”

The ghost's, Vaati's, face warped into one of pure disgust.

Link shrugged, "Sorry, but I've never heard of you. Haven't heard of any Wind Mages really. Either history has it out for Wind Mages in general, or you just weren't as good as you claim you were."

" I have you know I was once able to rebuild whole towers with nothing more than the power of the Wind!

"Look man, I've met plenty of ghosts that have lied about who they were in life, it's no big deal," Link raised his hands in mock surrender. "And since you can't use your magic, history is the only way to really know if you are telling the truth. Unless you know of any kind of location that you could show me, or hell, even any spells that you could teach as proof, I have no choice but to be a little skeptical."

“Oh, you want to learn some of my spells?” Vaati said, “I can teach you a few of my spells. Take out that little channeling baton of yours, you won’t be getting anywhere fast without that for now.”

Link grinned, his plan had worked perfectly. Villain or nor, a tutor was still a tutor. Taking the Wind Waker out of his pocket, he was ready to learn a few new tricks.
