Gizmo & the Counter

Summary:

“As Nat’s hot puffs of air on her neck lull her to sleep, Callie couldn’t help the smile that spread over her face, content with the life she’d built, the one younger Callie would never dreamed of, the one where the love of her life lay in her arms most nights and two little critters she gets to help raise. And if she woke up with the same smile on her face, what could she say? She was happy.”

Work Text:

“Mama!” came two small shouts and the patter of little socked feet on the floor.

Callie looked up from where she sat on the couch, working on paperwork, just in time to see two little figures sliding on the hardwood towards her. When the two little children made their way to their mama, Callie was engulfed in a hug. She was unable to do anything else but smile and wrap her kids in her arms.

“Annie, Luke, what have we talked about sliding on the hardwood,” her wife laughed from the entrance to the living room, an amused smile plastered on her face. She was only met with giggles from both younger kids.

After pressing a kiss to both Annie and Luke’s heads, Callie looked up and couldn’t help but smile at her wife.

“C’mon guys, don’t we have homework to do?” Callie asked in a soft voice, eyes never leaving Nat’s. Luke seemed to perk up at the mention of something else to do, while Annie groaned. Callie huffed as both kids removed themselves from her grip, grabbed their backpacks and headed to the kitchen table where they almost always did their homework. Callie followed closely behind until they reached Nat. When she reached her wife, Callie gently lifted a hand to cup Nat’s cheek and kissed her very softly. Before Callie could pull back Nat wrapped her arms around Callie’s waist.

“Something wrong?” Callie asked, worry etching into her voice.

“What am I not allowed to show love and affection to my wife, now?”

“No, but your wife knows something’s up,” Callie spoke softly, before pressing their lips together once more.

Nat hummed into the kiss, head then falling onto the other’s shoulder with a sigh. Callie pressed her cheek onto her lover’s head.

“Moooom, Gizmo’s on the counter, again,” Luke groaned from the table in the other room.

“I don’t know how many times I have to tell him that it’s not a big deal for Gizmo to be on the counter,” Nat sighed into Callie’s shoulder. Callie hummed in response.

After a minute had passed Callie spoke softly, “C’mon, we gotta make dinner and one of them is bound to have a question in the near future.” Callie pressed a kiss to her wife’s head before untangling herself from the other’s arms and lacing their fingers together.

As soon as the pair entered the kitchen Annie said, “Mom, I don’t understand this question.” Nat untangled their hands and made to sit next to their daughter. While Nat was preoccupied Callie made her way to the fridge and pulled out the head of lettuce they had. Carrying the lettuce over to the counter beside the fridge, Callie pulled out a plate from the cabinet above to put pulled off pieces onto. While bringing the plate down, Callie caught one of her favorite sights; Nat, Annie and Luke sat at the kitchen table, Luke sticking his tongue out as he concentrated on his homework, while Nat was pointing and explaining something as Annie nodded along. Callie couldn’t help the fondness that grew in her chest along with a small smile.

“C’mon Mama,” both kids whined from the couch. It was Friday night which meant movie night, which Callie couldn’t lie it was one of her favorite nights, having all her favorite people in the same room.

“I’m coming, I’m coming,” she assured them, “Why do you guys pick out a movie while mom and I finish the dishes?”

She was washing the dishes and Nat was drying them, since they didn’t have many dishes from the day. They stood shoulder to shoulder the whole time they repeated the cycle. After Nat was done drying the last of the dishes, she handed Callie the towel to dry her hands and placed a kiss on Callie’s cheek before turning for the living room. And if Callie was blushing like she was a teenager again, no one could tell.

After she was done drying her hands, she turned to head into the living room when she spotted a Calico sitting contentaly on the counter. Callie huffed at Gizmo’s antics and scratched his head on her way into the living room.

When Callie made her way into the other room, Nat was situated on the couch with both kids on the ground in front of the coffee table and the play menu of Anastasia. Callie sat down and pulled her wife into her arms. Nat wrapped her arms around Callie’s waist as Callie leaned back against the armrest of the couch.

Once everyone was situated, Luke grabbed the remote and hit play.

Once the movie finished it was nearing 10pm or somewhere around there considering that both kids had fallen asleep in their respectful positions. After untangling themselves from each other both women got up to pick up their children. Callie with Luke and Nat with Annie, they walked both kids to their bedrooms.

After both kids had been tucked into their beds, Nat and Callie plopped back onto the couch. The sigh Nat had let out hadn’t gone unnoticed.

“What’s up, love?” Callie asked, looking over to her wife.

Nat only sighed in response. After a few moments Nat inhaled sharply, “Some assholes at work.”

Callie placed a hand on Nat’s cheek to turn her face towards her. “I love you,” Callie whispered before pulling her into a kiss.

The kiss was soft and sweet at first but as time progressed the kisses turned heated with tongues and teeth clashing. As Callie straddled Nat’s lap, Nat trailed her hands up to Callie’s shoulders. As Callie’s mouth left Nat’s, she moved the hand on Nat’s face to her hair and tugged, causing the woman beneath her mouth to fall open with a moan. Callie then moved the other arm around the other woman's shoulders. As Callie’s mouth began to work on Nat’s neck, a small “Mama?” could be heard from the staircase. Being taken by surprise, Callie quickly pulled away from Nat and both women turned to see Luke on the stairs peering at them through the railing.

“What’s up, sweetheart?” Callie asked as quietly as possible as to not wake up Annie as well.

“I woke up and can’t get back to sleep.”

“Do you want me to read to you to sleep?” Callie asked.

Luke only nodded before retreating to his room again.

Callie looked down at Nat.

“I’ll meet you back in our room?” Nat asked with a hopeful smile.

Callie smiled and nodded before planting another kiss to Nat’s lips and disappearing upstairs.

When Callie finally opened the door to the shared bedroom Nat looked up from her phone.

“You finally get him to sleep?” Nat asked.

“Yep, finally.”

Callie made her way over to the bed, plopping down next to Nat. Callie wrapped her arms around Nat’s waist as she lay her head on the other’s shoulder and closed her eyes. Nat rested her head against the head on her shoulder. Both sitting there, taking in the other’s presence, they began to sway.

After what felt like 30 seconds if Callie was being honest, Nat tapped her hands, mumbling, “should get t’ bed.”

Humming in response, Callie removed her arms from around the other’s waist. Both scooted up the bed towards the pillows, Nat threw back the comforter, allowing the pair to slide underneath. As soon as Callie’s head hit the pillow, Nat already had her arms around the other woman’s waist and face buried in Callie’s neck, along with being asleep in seconds.

Callie sighed to herself as she buried her face in her wife’s hair and wrapped her arms around the sleeping form’s shoulders. As Nat’s hot puffs of air on her neck lull her to sleep, Callie couldn’t help the smile that spread over her face, content with the life she’d built, the one younger Callie would never dreamed of, the one where the love of her life lay in her arms most nights and two little critters she gets to help raise. And if she woke up with the same smile on her face, what could she say? She was happy.

Notes:

So, I posted on my Tumblr that Halo and Phoenix were cat moms and I saw a prompt that was something like sliding across hardwood floors with socks on which is how this fic came to life. Anyways, hope y’all liked it, I’ll try not to fall off the face of the Earth again. I do have more ideas for fics not Just top gun related but more fandoms like musical theater based bc I’m a nerd okay? Thanks for reading my rant and I hope to be back soon!
