Work Text:

Aonung had come across a certain darker na’vi sitting on the rocks multiple times, but this time the figure seemed much shorter than the one he was used to. It’s the youngest Sully. The one that Aonung can’t remember the name of for the life of him.

“What are you doing out here?” Aonung questioned, making the small Omaticaya na’vi nearly jump out of her skin. “Oh, it’s just you.” The little girl sighed after calming herself down. “What are you doing here?” Aonung repeated, crossing his arms. “Neteyam comes out here a lot at night, I wanted to see why.” She explained, turning back to look out at the water.

“He comes out when he can’t sleep. Now why would you come out here alone so late, you know how much he worries about you.” Aonung said, standing more firmly now. “I know I know. I just wanted to see what he sees.” The little na’vi mumbled as her ears dropped. “Well now you’ve seen it, so hop your way back home-or bounce or whatever you do. Doesn’t matter just go back to your marui.” He huffed, tapping his foot on the ground.

“I still haven’t seen what he sees, though.” She argued, keeping her back to him. “Look up then.” Aonung grumbled, the young Omaticayan did as told. “Wow…” She whisped as she stared at the beautiful stars that were glistening in the dark sky.

“I come out here to see the stars as well.” Aonung began as he too looked up at the stars. “Neteyam is the biggest star.” The girl hummed as if she was in his mind. Aonung said nothing about the comment. “That’s what Mommy says. She says he will always shine brighter than the rest.” The Omaticayan added still staring at the bright stars. “And you believe that, too?”

“Of course, everyone with common sense does.” She stated, matter of factly. “Guess so.” Aonung sighed, sitting down beside the little na’vi girl. “See even you agree, Nung.” She huffed, pridefully. “Nung? My name is Aonung.” He clarified. “I know, it’s a nickname.” She smiled at him and his shoulders untensed a bit.

“Alright,” He cleared his throat. “You need to head back to your marui, now, Taki.” Aonung said, standing up. “It’s Tuk, Tuktirey.” Tuk scoffed as she too got up. “Sure, now go back to your marui, Ta-Tuktirey.” He sighed. “I don’t know how to get back in the dark.” Tuk confessed her ears dropping as she pouted.

“Then I guess I’ll bring you there.” Aonung exhaled. “Can you carry me there? I’m cold.” Tuk batted her big eyes at him and he complied.

“Here you are, don’t go off on your own anymore.” Aonung lectured as he placed the girl down. “If I do, I’m sure you’ll bring me back.” Tuk smiled cheekily. “Just go inside before-” Aonung was cut off by the curtain cover opening to reveal Neteyam.

Neteyam momentarily looked eyes with Aonung before averting his gaze to his baby sister. “Tuk!” Neteyam whisper yelled as he pulled his siter into his arms. “Hey..” Tuk sheepishly smiled, wrapping his arms around her brother. “Where did you go? Why is Aonung here?” He asked, lifting his limps to inspect for any injuries.

“I found her out by the rocks. I walked her here after we talked for a little while.” Aonung explained. “By the rocks? Why would you go there by yourself and so late?” Neteyam questioned, still inspecting her. “I wanted to see what you see when you go out late at night..” Tuk mumbled, avoiding her brother’s gaze. “How did you know I go out there?” Neteyam mumbled, glancing over to the Metkayinan, who raised his arms in defense.

“I asked Kiri where you went the other day and she told me that you go to the rocks late at night.” Tuk explained. “How..nevermind. Let’s get inside before mom or dad wake up.” Neteyam said, putting her down and ushering her toward the certain. She did as told and went in, leaving Aonung and Neteyam outside by themselves.

“Thank you, Aonung. I hope she didn’t cause too much trouble.” Neteyam sighed, giving the other a slight bow. “Don’t mention it, I know how it is to have a sneaky little sister.” Aonung smiled, placing a hand on his hip. “Tsireya? Sneaky? Yeah right.” Neteyam huffed with amusement. ”You don’t know her like I do.She’s definitely sneaky.” Aonung shook his head.

“Guess not. Well, good night then.” Neteyam gave a little wave as he began to open the certain. “Good night.” Aonung nodded, returning the wave.

“What’s this?” Aonung questioned as he stared at the shell necklase in his palm. “It’s for bringing Tuk back home safely.” Neteyam smiled. “I told you not to mention it.” Aounung whispered as he eyes darted around. “No one’s here, calm down.” Neteyam huffed, placing a hand on his hip. “...Thank you for the necklace.” Aonung mumbled, closing his hand around the necklace. “Thank you for returning Tuk home.” Neteyam smiled, making Aonung’s stomach churn in a way it never has before.

“Guess you really are the brightest star.” Aonung sighed, shaking his head. “Am I? I think Tuk or Kiri would fit better.” Neteyam hummed. “No, you fit just fine.” Aonung smiled.

Notes:

This ended up being way shorter than intended, but in the future, I plan to make longer fics. Constructive criticism is welcome and if you would like to talk to me, my Twitter is @Justandie3. Have a good rest of your day and remember to drink water and eat if you think you can!

Also side-note this was originally going to end with angst, but I wasn’t listening to The Smiths so I decided against it.
