Seeing Colors

Chapter Text

Getting dressed up for the first time since COVID had hit the world was actually a weird feeling for you. Not that you got dressed up very often pre covid but during covid you couldn't get dressed up for anything so all your summer dresses were covered in a light dusting. And besides this wasn’t a type of wedding that you could just throw on a summer dress, this was black tie wedding. You had ordered this really beautiful dark navy, as stated online, wrapped dress from this small boutique, the dress hugged your curves and gave your boobs a nice look too which was always a plus, as someone who hated to wear makeup, because why wear makeup when you can’t see colors because you don't have a soulmate at 23, and getting all dressed up in heels and a pretty dress you looked pretty damn good.

The wedding was beautiful, the vows were exchanged, the priest had done a beautiful job, and the groom’s mother, Maddy, cried the entire wedding. Her first son and eldest child getting married was a very tearful event. You had sat with the groom’s family, since you had known them for almost a decade and was considered an extra daughter and sister of theirs. As someone who didn’t grow up in the Catholic church, most of it was not understandable and your mind wandered to if you would ever find your soulmate. You’re at the age when everyone already has their soulmates, and getting married, new jobs, and living life to the fullest.

You, stilling living with your parents, working a retail job,

It's rare to not find your soulmate before you turn 20, you felt exhausted by the questions. You know a couple celebrities that don't have soulmates yet

“Oh (Y/N).” Jacob, the groom, said, grabbing your arm as you were walking by with a plate full of horderves. “I wanted to introduce you to someone I think you’d really like to meet.”

You followed as he walked through the crowd of people, getting stopped almost every step with friends and family congratulating on the beautiful wedding. He finally stopped at a table in the back corner of the room. “(Y/N), I’d like to introduce you to Tom Hiddleston, Tom Hiddleston, (y/n) she’s an extra sister of mine.”

You barely caught your plate from falling to the floor as the one and only Tom Hiddleston stood up and reached out to shake your hand. “Very nice to meet you Ms. (y/n)....” his voice trailing off as he looked you in the eyes.

Color flooded your eyesight, making your knees buckle, you gasped as you looked into the face of your soulmate. Tom’s face was blank, looking at you with no emotions, though his hand caught yours so you wouldn’t fall, Both of you staring at each other for a little while then necessary. “Uh, oh my gosh. I’m a b-big fan.” you said trying to play off that you just met your soulmate and it's none other than Tom Hiddleston, a very sought after british actor who you’ve fawned over since you were 11. You were still looking at each other, wow his eyes were piercingly beautiful.

The groom and Tom Hiddleston's date were none the wiser. You let go of Tom's hand and ran it down your blue dress, wait is this what blue looks like? “I’m so sorry, I’m so rude” you said as you looked over at his date, a beautiful blond-haired woman, with the perfect Hollywood body. “I never got your name?”

She smiled up at you. “ I’m Jane, Tom’s date.” Wow her smile was the million dollar smile.

“So very nice to meet you! How do you two know Jacob?” you asked nervously, trying to stay calm as you looked at your soulmate who was showing no sign of having colors suddenly showing up in front of him. Wait, did he not have the same thing happen to him? Are there such things as a one sided soulmate?

Tom glanced at the groom, who was pulled away by another guest, and looked back at you. “He was an extra videographer for one of my shoots I was doing and we just became good friends….uh how do you know him, he called you an extra sister?”

You looked down at your plate of food, which you noted was sadly going cold, colors showed which food was which. “Well, it's a long story, but Jacob did a video for my family for a our adoption fundraiser of my brother and I stayed in contact with him and now I try to come visit at least twice a year and I stay with his parents and his younger siblings.” Tom nodded, no emotions again showing that he also met his soulmate, and you stood there awkwardly for a few seconds. What do you say when you just met your soulmate who has a person and you're at a wedding and he's a big time celebrity? “It was so lovely to meet you Mr. Hiddleston and Ms. Jane. I see Jacob’s sister who I haven't seen yet that I need to go talk to.” Tom stood up and shook your hand again, you felt your body sing when your skin connected and you looked up to see him staring at you with a look that you didn't know how to describe. You gave them both a smile and quickly walked away, tears trying to form but you blinked them away.

You didn’t lie technically, you did see the groom’s sister and you hadn’t yet talked to her….today. You throw the plate of cold hoduvers, seeing all the colors and different shades almost make it too hard to walk. You make it over to Tiffany, the groom's sister, and grab her arm and smile. “I’m so sorry, but can I steal this lovely lady for a minute?” You asked the group of people she was talking to. “I need to talk to her for a quick minute.” They all nod and you flash them a big thank you smile as you drag Tiff out of the reception room where you just met your soulmate, unknowingly of someone watching you leave the room.

Tiff looked at you confused, “(y/n) what's going on?” you had practically grabbed her arm and ran from the reception room with no explanation. You keep walking quickly and walk out into the outside garden. “Are you okay? What’s wrong?”

You gestured at her to take a seat on the bench right there as you started pacing. “Okay, I-I…” you sighed, scratching your head as you tried to figure out the right way to say this. “Okay, I-I think I just met my soulmate.” you blurted out.

“You think or you know?” She asked quickly, a smile already starting to form on her face. She had already met her soulmate and was getting married just a few months after her brother.

“I know.” You stated.

She squealed and got up from the bench and hugged you. “That's so amazing! Who is he and why didn't you point him out to me?”

Your eyes welled up with tears. You paused before opening your mouth, but finding no words closed it again as the tears slipped from your face. “(y/n)?” Tiff’s concerning face came into view again. “What's wrong?”

From an outsider's perspective you probably looked like a fish, your mouth opening and closing not finding the right words to say. To explain to her who your soulmate is. You tried saying it but it came out in a sob. Tiff led you to the bench and rubbed your back as you tried to calm down. “Take your time hun.”

You leaned up against her shoulder as you gasped trying to calm yourself. “It’s….It’s….” you shook your head as you stood up again pacing. “It’s fucking Tom Hiddleston.” you said out in a gasp.

She stared at you for a minute trying to figure out if this is a joke or not. “Tom Hiddleston, like the actor who plays Loki in the Marvel films, the man you’ve had a celebrity crush on since you were like how young?”

You nodded as you burst into tears again. “And i think he has a soulmate, he didn’t do anything when I first saw color. and he’s here with this beautiful Hollywood perfect lady who’s name is Jane and who is near his age I’m sure….oh my god, how am I his soulmate, I’m at least ten years younger than him. Tiff oh my god. What am I going to do?” you rambled, everything finally hitting you at once.

Tiff grabbed your hands pulling you from your mind. “It’ll be okay, how about we just enjoy tonight, Jacob has Tom’s number and if you want I can explain the situation to Jake and get you his number so you can contact him after the wedding can talk to Tom tonight after dinner. I can get you guys into the private area so you two can’t be interrupted.”

You shook your head. “No, I don’t think I’m his soulmate at all. He had no reaction. None whatsoever. I can’t go up to him and just say hey, I'm your soulmate, we need to talk.” You started pacing again. A couple walked past giggling making you and Tiff look up to the windows that looked into the hallway, the back of the couple walking back towards the ballroom. The hallway was long, you could see the ballroom at the end, people mingling waiting for the room to open for dinner, the bathrooms were off to the right closer to the garden, and across the hall was the private room for the wedding party to hide till they’re entrance at the dinner. The men’s bathroom door opened and the man looked up catching your eyes, you gazed into the eyes of none other than your soulmate. You probably looked like a deer in the headlights and you spun around and sat down on the bench next to Tiff. “He just walked out of the bathroom. Is he coming?”

Tiff laughed. “Oh my god, you totally met your soulmate, you are blushing so hard right now.” She turned slightly to see if anyone was looking through the windows. She saw Tom starting to turn away, his face in a frown. “He’s walking back to the reception now.” She glanced down to her watch, “which by the way, dinner starters in like five minutes I need to get back to the wedding party. Are you okay? Can I leave you in the same room as your soulmate? I mean you are sitting with my parents and my dad’s two cousins who would absolutely love you, so you can be distracted.”

You nodded, taking a deep breath. “Yeah, you go. I’ll come in a minute.” she nodded and kissed your forehead, saying something about how it’ll all turn out okay. You didn’t hear her, your thoughts just running continually. First off, you’re over ten years younger than him, second off…..he’s a celebrity, why would he want to even have you even if you were his soulmate. He has Miss Hollywood.

You shook your head and blinked back the tears that started to form again. Nope not happening, Abbie, Jake’s other sister, worked too hard on this makeup saying that if you didn't have at least 10 men falling over themselves for you she’ll grab you and keep you herself. Little did she know that you’d meet your soulmate. You stood up and glanced around the little garden. You realized with a start, that you can see color, you looked over to the flowers, seeing different shades of what you assume pink and purple. You start to walk inside and see darker colors, on the floor, the wall, even the ceiling. You started to get overwhelmed again and walked into the bathroom. You leaned over the sink and took a couple of deep breaths. You looked at yourself in the mirror, your eyes looking a little puffy and red but not too noticeable. You heard the server announce that the dining room was open and to please make your way there. You shook yourself and stood up straight, you’ve got this (y/n), make it through tonight and then see where you should go from there.

You sat down at your designated table and chatted with the groom’s parents and were introduced to Jim’s, the groom’s dad, two cousins. The wedding party did a wonderful entrance, each bridesmaid and groomsmen did their own dance move when walking in together. The couple did their first dance and then the father of the bride dance, and then the mother of the groom dance, not a dry eye in the room after all was finished. Dinner started and all throughout the three delicious courses you could feel a pair of eyes watching you, though you didn’t dare turn to find out who it was.

During the last course of the meal (before desserts) the maid of honor and best man did their speeches, everyone cried at the best man speech when the Jake’s brother, Steve couldn’t make it through his speech when trying to tell the bride and groom how proud he was of them and how grateful God had made sure these two were soulmates. You saw Tiff look over at you and you smiled at her to let her know you were okay at the moment. The bride and groom walked onto the dance floor and announced that the dance floor was open, and if you wanted dessert you had to dance for at least one song. Cha Cha Slide started blaring from the speakers after a couple of songs had played. You squealed, one of your favorite songs to dance to at weddings and grabbed Tiff’s hand and dragged her onto the dance floor laughing. You started following the song and dance moves, laughing as you made mistakes. You danced for a couple more upbeat songs before going back to your seat to rest your feet and a slow dance started, besides a piece of cake was calling your name. You sat down and took a bite of the wedding cake, which was delicious.

Maddy leaned over and said in a loud whisper. “Don’t tell the guests but this wedding cake is from Costco. Cheapest wedding decision ever, got two of each flavor and it was less than a hundred dollars.”

You smiled, taking a sip from your wine, “ I love Costco cake so much. It's so delicious and it's so cheap too.”

Maddy nodded and took another bite of her cake and went back to talking to her cousin in law. Another slow song started and you slowly ate your cake, not paying attention to anything but the cake. You may have been a little tipsy but god the cake was really good, I’m going to find the person who made this recipe and worship them. You thought

You heard someone laugh behind you and you whipped around, Tom stood right behind you, looking perfectly handsome in his black suit. “There’ll probably be a line by the time you find the baker. Because I’ll be the first one to find them and worship them myself.”

You almost choked down the cake that lodged itself in your throat. “Uh….” You didn't know what to say. What should you say?

Tom reached out his hand. “Another slow dance just started, dance with me.” He gave you a look that made your tispy mind agree to move your hand into his and you stood and walked onto the dance floor with him.

He put his hand around your waist and moved your hand to his shoulder and took your other hand in his and started moving to the music. You didn't know where to look, his face, his eyes, his hand? His shoes looked like a good spot to stare at. He leaned down into your ear. “We need to talk.” he said just loud enough for only you to hear.

You swallow the lump that had suddenly formed, staring at the dance floor, the patterns looked really pretty especially since the colors were popping. “Y-Yes we do.” He nodded and kept dancing with you, spinning you out and back. You two continued to slow dance without speaking to each other, though your thoughts were racing a mile a minute. You were dancing with Tom Hiddleston, the man who plays your favorite Marvel character. you were dancing with your soulmate, though you might not be his soulmate. You met your soulmate tonight, in a different state, you flew half away across the states to get here. Does he even live in the states or does he just rent a place in New York every time he visits.

The song ended and an upbeat song came on and during the movement of bodies coming onto the dance floor, Tom grabbed your hand and walked out of the ballroom and led you to the garden just two hours earlier you had sat with Tiffany. He let go of your hand and walked to the edge of the garden, the music muffled while you stood in the entrance of the doorway leading out into the garden.

You folded your arms and leaned onto the wall. You stood there, not knowing what to say, while Tom stood with his back towards you, looking down at the flowers you could just barely make out in the darkness of the night. You cleared your throat, “So…’re my soulmate.” you mustered the courage to say, probably due to the multiple drinks you had.

You could see Tom stiffen at the words, he nodded before turning around. “And...I am yours.”

You let out a little laugh, whether that was from relief or terror neither knew. “What do we….I’m….” you trailed off not knowing what to say. You swallowed. “Don’t you have a soulmate already?”

He looked at you confused. “No.” You looked at him confused. “Why would you think that?”

He let out a loud laugh, throwing his head back, eyes crinkling. “That’s my cousin, she came as my plus one tonight.” He looked at you grinning.

Your face turned bright red, “oh” was all you said.

“You are my only soulmate.” He said.

You smiled in relief, though it fell off quickly. You walked to the bench and sat down and ran a hand over your face. “I-I’m much younger than you. You can't possibly think that this is a good idea.” you moved your hand in between the two of you. “Us.” you ended lamentably

Tom didn't say anything for a long while, which made you feel like you stopped breathing. “I mean, I-I…” he trailed off. You went to get up to get out of the conversation, not wanting to hear your soulmate reject you.. “(y/n) wait please...I don't know what to do. I mean, you're my soulmate. It’s just, can we have this conversation at a different time? After we’ve had time to digest this? I want to talk about this, I so want to talk about this with you. It’s just...I don’t know what to think. All night I've been trying to process it. I can’t think of anything.” He sighed, and then looked up at you. “I’m here all week, at the hotel near here, I’ve got a couple auditions while I’m here. Let's get each other's numbers and meet up somewhere in two days. I’m sure tomorrow won’t be enough time to wrap our heads around all of this, especially since we’ve been drinking some and it’ll be a late night tonight.”

He walked over and sat down on the bench next to you and you immediately looked at the sky, the stars twinkling. “(y/n)” he said softly “look at me please.” he waited patiently till you got the courage to look into his striking eyes. “I will not skip town. I promise. I want to talk to you about this when I’ve had time to think and wrap my mind around it as you should too.. I don't want to say something wrong because I'm tipsy and you’re tipsy and I just don’t want something to go wrong before something good can happen with us. Can you wait two days?”

You sighed, you had the same idea running through your mind as well, “Yeah, I’m just freaking out, if this got out, and people start attacking you for all this I just don’t want to ruin your reputation.”

Tom huffed and looked down to his hands smiling, “(y/n) you’re worrying about me and my reputation when it really should me worrying about you and what you think of me. Are you okay? How are you processing the colors and all that.” He asked, waving his hand.

You smile and look at him. “I’m good, let's stop talking all about soulmates and such and let's get back to the party and celebrate Jacob and Betty and enjoy that Costco cake.” You grabbed his hands. “I’m so grateful that you are letting me….us think about this for a few days.”

He stood up and gave you his hand. “Shall we join the festivities?” He smiled that beautiful brilliant smile.

You smiled back. “Yes lets.”

Chapter Two

Two days later (y/n) was sitting at a table in the local coffee shop that Tiff recommended,   holding the ceramic mug in her hand as she looked out the window watching the few people that were walking past, trying to finish their afternoon shopping. She breathed through her nose and out through her mouth, anxiety coursing through her veins.

(y/n) was thankful that Tom had suggested you both wait a day before talking about everything. She had spent the previous day with Tiff and Maddy learning the colors and trying to wrap her mind around the fact that she has indeed met your soulmate and that it is in fact Tom Hiddleston. She had spent hours weighing the pros and cons with Tiff, she cried in fear, happiness, and had lots of wine with Tiff. (y/n) was so caught up in her thoughts that she didn't see Tom walk in.

He walked over, looking at her with fond sweetness. He spent the whole day yesterday thinking of (y/n),  trying to learn colors since he was holed up in the hotel all day yesterday. He even ended up googling the colors to see which color was which. He did drink wine while doing that so he doesn't remember much. Trying to wrap his mind around that he finally finally met his soulmate, he was still on that ‘just found my soulmate’ high.

“(y/n)?” He laid his hand on your shoulder, making her jump, “Oh I’m so sorry (y/n). Didn’t mean to scare you.”

She gave him a tight smile, “Oh it’s okay, I’m jumpy all the time.” (y/n)  stood up and gave him a hug hello, “Hi Tom.”

Tom sat down across from her, “How are you doing?” He asked as a waitress came over to get his order. He quickly scanned the menu and ordered a drink. She gave him a bright smile before taking the menu away saying that she’ll bring that drink right out. Tom sighed and looked back at (y/n), “Really, how are you?”

“Tom, really I still don’t know how to process this.” she glanced up at him, “But I’m just glad you're here to talk about it with me. How are you doing all of this?” she asked, taking a sip of her coffee.

Tom glanced down at his phone, pulling up something on his phone, “This is what I did all day yesterday.” His google history showing every color that you can imagine had been looked up. He smiled happily, “I’ve never even heard of three-fourths of these colors!’’

(y/n) laughed as she took a sip of your coffee again, “Yeah, I did that too, with Jacob’s sister and mom. It’s crazy, it's overwhelming at times. It was actually fun to do it with Tiff and Maddy yesterday, though in hindsight I shouldn’t have drunk that much wine.”

Tom grinned, “Same here, I did that too.” he laughed.

The waitress came over with his coffee, placing it on the table in front of him. She went to walk away before turning back around and asked in an exciting voice for a picture with him, saying how big of fan she is. Tom stood up, leaned close and took the selfie with the waitress. She shook in excitement, and thanked him profusely before heading back to work with a huge smile on her face. Tom sat back down with a happy sigh, “I’m sorry about that, I try to give the fans pictures, I know it makes their day or week.”

(y/n) suddenly turned shy, finding a loose string on her clothing, “Do-Does that happen a lot when you’re out?” She asked as she looked at her sleeve.

Tom grimaced, “Depends on what I’m looking like to be honest, sometimes if I wear a disguise I think I’ve only got recognised twice. But when I don’t it’s almost every time, either I have fans or the paps trying to take a picture of me.” He shrugs. “I’m used to it.”

She nodded, “So.” (y/n) dragged out. “We should...” you trail off.

“Talk about all this, yeah.” Tom finished, “Listen, before we do, did that make you uncomfortable just now with the waitress? Because we could go back to my hotel room if that makes you more comfortable or somewhere we can't be interrupted. I’m sorry about that, I should’ve asked if it was okay.”

(y/n) shook her head, “No! If a fan comes up for a picture you don’t have to ask me. It’s not like I’m your girlfriend and we’re on a date. It’s just me.” She talked quickly.

Tom’s expression changed too quickly for (y/n) to catch, “Except we’re….soulmates.” He added quietly. She shrunk into herself.

“Yeah, I’m sorry about this. I’m still trying to understand that I actually have a soulmate and that it's you, is a lot to take in.” She look’s up at him, “Really, that didn’t bother me at all with the picture….it just reminded me that you're a celebrity and a big one at that, I mean you’re one of Marvel’s biggest characters, and I can’t just say okay we’re soulmates let's move have a whole unique life that I have to take in.”

Tom nods solemnly, “I apologise that I’m your soulmate. This isn’t right for someone like you, you’re young, still have a lot of life to live and….” He pauses, “wait, how old are you?”

(y/) took a deep sigh, this topic was one she didn’t want to have on your guys first talk, which she had sobbed to Tiff about most of last night. She remembered what Tiff said to her. He’d be a fool to leave you because of a bit of an age difference. Good grief, think about the Kardashian’s ex who dates all those barely legal girls and nobody says a thing about that! You are mature for your age, you have gone through so much shit most people haven't in their entire lives. You’re not wanting him because he’s famous or because of money you want him because he’s your soulmate and if he can’t see that then kick him to the curb!

Looking up at Tom, seeing a calm look on his face, makes (y/n) feel a bit more confident. He’s seen you multiple times, you look young too. So if he hasn't’ run for the hills yet, he probably won't now. “I-I’m 23 years old, and listen, if the age gap is too big, please tell me now. Because I can’t be strung along just for you to drop me if this gets out and people say stuff about it and you can’t handle it. I-I can’t deal with that.” She blurted out, taken aback with what she just said herself. She stares at him as he processes what she just said.

He nods, takes a sip of coffee before replying. “I-I mean, first off I would never ever start a relationship with someone younger than me and then leave them because of an age gap. Second, I understand your panic about the age gap. I mean, I’m forty, that’s about a seventeen year age gap. But listen to me, I would never, ever, ever leave you because of the age difference. If I, heaven forbid, left you, it will not ever be about that okay. I promise you.”

(y/n) blinks quickly to push back the tears that tried to escape. She smiled at him, “Are you positive that you want me as your soulmate? Even though we both saw colors when we met doesn’t mean you have to stay with me. I’ve heard stories of people leaving their soulmates for someone else. If you want to, I'm letting you know that it's okay. This is your ticket out. You could find someone who’s closer to you.” You don’t know where to look so you look anywhere but at him.

He hangs his head and takes a deep breath before reply, “(y/n), I want to continue this with you. I want you as my soulmate. Are you not wanting to be mine, is this why you’re telling me this? Because if I’m too old for you, you have every right to leave right now and pretend this never happened.”

She shakes her head quickly as she brushes her tears away that escaped, she huffs a laugh, “god, we’re so silly. We both don’t want each other to get into this relationship if the other doesn't want to, but we both do. It’s just so many things that need to be discussed that might start more of this, it’s not a fight, what’s the right word for it?” She thought for a second, snapping her finger, “Anyway doesn’t matter, what if we write out what we are worried about and then give it to each other and then we can go from there?” She questioned.

Tom nodded in agreement, reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a piece of paper. “Already did that.” He smiled, (y/n) laughed as she pulled her piece of paper out from her purse. “Great minds think alike,” he added, “Actually, great soulmate’s think alike.”

She grinned, this great beautiful grin that made Tom stop breathing. He blinked, realising (y/n) was saying something. “Sorry?”

“I said, do you want to read it aloud or just swap and talk after?” She repeated, trying to make her paper spin on the table with one finger.

“Oh uh yeah, yeah, sorry.” He unfolded his paper and handed it to her as she did the same. “Ready?” She smiled and nodded. They both fell quiet as they read each other's papers.

1: Age Difference???

2:How public does she want to be with me?

3: Does she like dogs?

4: What is her situation for being a soulmate right now?

5: What are her thoughts on, further down the road, about moving to London?

1: Age gap????????

2: Does he want the whole world to know or keep it a secret?

3: CATS??

4: Is he even able to have a soulmate rn?

5:What about living situations?

They both laughed, looking at each other as they folded up the papers and handed them back to one another. Of course they’d have similar questions. They are soulmates for god’s sake, but this is a tricky situation to be dealing with. One’s a normal person and the other is a world renown superstar, who has everyone falling for him whether they have a soulmate or not. To go about this relationship was already hard enough, gotta add this into it makes it even worse!

(y/n) spoke first, “Do we wanna start from question two since we’ve already covered question one?”

“Yeah, usually I let ladies go first, but I can go first if you want.” Tom said. (y/n) gestures for him to go ahead, “Okay, number two was about how public or private we want to be. I would be okay to wait if you are, I would like for us to either figure out what we are doing or even never. I like my life private as much as possible with stuff like this.”

(y/n) agreed, “oh thank god, I’m so grateful that you don’t want it public, I don’t want to deal with that right now.” She grabbed her coffee mug, wrapping her hands around it.

“okay, number three for me is if you like cats? I have two cats, their names are Bucky and….and” (y/n) paused trying to hide an embarrassed laugh, “Loki.” She covered her hand with her mouth and started laughing, Tom along with her.

Tom leaned back into the booth, “I love cats, I have a dog who’s been around cats. Have you’re cats been around dogs?”

(y/n) nodded excitedly, “They’ve been around dogs before, my two older sisters both have dogs and bring them over all the time to my parents house. Yeah, my second older sister’s dog is just super friendly with the cats and just wants to play with them and gets upset when they don’t want too. It’s hilarious watching her whimper at the cats and they’re just trying to take a nap and he wants to play chase.”

Tom chuckled, “I’d love to see that, Elle, my dog, she’s fine with cats too. She doesn't hate them, she just ignores them or licks them while they’re napping. I’m excited for you to meet Elle, she’ll love you.” He took a sip of coffee before continuing, “okay question number four is how our life is right now for a soulmate. Well, I’m doing a couple auditions for some Broadway plays, since I loved doing Betrayal here in the states. If I do get one I’ll be in New York for a long while, I don’t have anyone in my life in the dating sense. I did date a couple of people but we’ve broken up and then they’ve all found soulmates after, which I’m so happy for them all. What about you?”

(y/n) took a large sip of her, now cold, coffee. “Well, I don’t have anyone in my life to be considered a ‘boyfriend’,” she said using air quotes, “I….I, uh, work in retail and as a PCA part time, so I’m working a lot to help pay the bills. I-I still live with my parents.” She added quietly, as if embarrassed.

Tom leaned forward and took her hand in his, “(y/n), please understand I would never think of you any less because of your job or living situation, look at me.” He said sternly, waiting for her to look him in the eyes. “I will never ever think like that of you, understand?” You nodded as he rubbed his fingers over your knuckles. “Talking about living situations….I know this is very early on to talk about but since it was on the list...would you ever consider coming to London? No pressure, just want your honest thoughts.” He waits patiently for you, his hand still holding yours.

“I-I would love to come visit?” She squeaked out after a pregnant pause, “I’ve never been away from my family for more than three weeks, I went on a mission’s trip to Ukraine, I made so many friends over there, thank god for instagram to stay in touch. Sorry rambling, I-I mean, I would love to move to London, but it’s just the thought scares me, but I don’t want to live in two different countries but I would never ask you to move closer to me. Oh my god I can’t move to London, I have two siblings with special needs that I will have custody of when my parents pass. I can’t move to London, oh my god, oh my god, i-if something happened to them and I was on the other side of the world..” she started to hyperventilate.

Tom grabs her hand, “(y/n) it is not a problem, okay? We are just starting out, we barely know each other. We can wait a couple months before we discuss anything like that, okay?”

(y/n) nods as she wipes away some tears, “Thank you.” she whispered, “I’m so sorry.”

Tom shakes his head. “Don’t be, okay. Don’t worry about moving anywhere right now.” He glances at the list, “looks like we went through the questions.”

They both fall silent, (y/n) took that time to look around the coffee shop, realising how long they’ve been there. Night had fallen and the coffee shop was empty, besides the waitress, who was wiping down the tables, it was just the two of them. (y/n) dug for her phone that was stashed in her purse, turning the phone on to look at the time. She panicked at the time, releasing that it was now too dark to walk back to Maddy’s mom’s house, especially since she doesn’t live in this town it wouldn’t be wise to walk back. Shit.

“ (y/n)? Everything okay?” Tom questioned.

She swallowed, “Yeah! It’s just I didn’t realise how late it was and I walked here and I’m not from around here either, I’ll just text Tiff to come pick me up once we’re done.” She put her phone away.

Tom shifted in his seat nervously, “D-Do you want me to drive you there? I could bring you over and I’m headed that way, my hotel is past their house anyways, I’ve been to their house a couple times to drop off some things for Jacob so I know where they live.” He looked at (y/n) with questioning eyes.

(y/n) smiled at her hands, “Are you sure? I wouldn’t want to bother you.”

Tom shook his head. “It’s no problem, then we could talk some more in the vehicle on the way. If you’re ready, we could leave now,” he looked at his watch, “It’s almost time for the coffee shop to close anyways.”

(y/n) shrugged, looking down at her empty mug, “Yeah, I’m done here if you are.”

He nodded and stood up from the booth, as (y/n) grabbed her and his mugs and brought them over to the waitress, Tom following, flashing the waitress a smile. “Nice to meet you again, ma’am.” He waved to her as they left the coffee shop. He dug through his pocket for his keyfob and walked up to his car, unlocking it. He stopped in front of his vehicle and opened the door for (y/n), helping her into the car, before going to his side and getting in. He drove off, silence between the two once again falling between the two.

(y/n) cleared her throat, “ So Tom, have you told your family yet?”

He shook his head, as he turned his blinker on to move into the next lane. “No, I wanted some time to figure out what we are going to do before I said something. Did you?”

She also shook her head. “No, it’s such a complicated situation that, like you said, we have to figure out. I’ll tell them when I fly back home and get a good night's sleep in my bed.”

Tom nodded, slowing the car down as they got to a red stop light. “A good night's sleep in your bed at home to help figure out problems.”

By the time Tom had pulled into the Anderson’s driveway they were in a deep conversation    about why do people love dogs more than cats, especially pet stores, there are much more options for dogs with food, treats, toys, clothing than cats. She never understood why people love dogs more than cats. When, in her experience, all the cats she has had in her life were the best cats she could ever have. Especially in her bouts of depression, they always knew and always gave extra snuggles during those times.

Hours flew by with them talking about just mundane things in the car, until (y/n)’s phone chimed with a text from Tiff. “Oh my god, look at the time. It’s almost midnight, I’m sure Tiff is wondering where I am.” She looked down at her hands, twisting them nervously, “Thank you for being so patient with me today Tom. I’m sure it’ll still be hard at times until we all figure it out, but today was so wonderful to get a few of the worries I...we’ve had about this.”

“Of course (y/n), and thank you for being so thoughtful of me.” He said, before getting out of the car, going around the car and opening the door for (y/n). He gave her his hand and helped her out of the car, “I will call you tomorrow and we can try to get together again before you fly home? I have an audition the next two days” He said as he walked her up to the door.

The Anderson’s house was mostly dark, the family room being the only light on in the house. (y/n) sighed before turning around to face Tom. “I’m so grateful that you’re my soulmate. I can't wait to see you again.” She said.

“Goodnight (y/n), I hope you have a wonderful next few days.” Tom said as he leaned down, kissing her check softly.

(y/n) froze before looking up at him with a soft smile, “goodnight, Tom. I’ll text you tomorrow?”

He nodded, and slowly walked backwards away, “I’ll probably text you tomorrow first.” he said with a smile.

(y/n) smiled back before nodding and going inside, tackled by Tiff immediately. She bombarded (y/n) with questions, pulling her into the family room. “Tell me all about it. How did it go?” She asked as she sat down with (y/n) on the couch.

(y/n) sighed. “I want too, I do but I want to go to bed. I’m exhausted, but I promise to tell you every single detail tomorrow morning.”

Tiffany grinned. “Every single detail, down to the tiny details missy.”

(y/n) stood up. “I will tell you this, he kissed my check goodnight.” She left the room, laughing at Tiff’s face. “I’ll tell you everything tomorrow!”

As soon as (y/n) got to her room she was staying in at the Anderson’s house, she laid down on the bed and immediately fell asleep.

(y/n) sat up suddenly, her blankets falling to the floor. “W-What the hell?” She mumbled, pushing her hair out of her face. “Tiff, I know I said I’d tell you everything today but it's” grabbing her phone to look at the time, before sighing heavily. “It’s seven thirty in the morn…..” she trailed off as she looked at Tiffany. “What’s wrong?”

Tiff shuffled her feet, looking nervous before sighing and shoved her phone into (y/n)’s face. “I don’t know a way to tell you.”

(y/n) pulled back and squinted at the phone. A big bold article staring back at her with a picture of her and Tom holding hands at the coffee shop.

Chapter Text

(y/n) had been pacing for 30 minutes, she kept running her hands through her hair, her hair a tangled mess now. Tiff biting her fingernails in nervousness, (y/n) hadn’t said a single word since she was shown the news article hours ago. Once she read and reread the article which was incredibly detailed, she had grabbed her phone. Multiple texts messages and phone calls from her parents, friends, and Tom, who had called the most. She put her phone on Do Not Disturb and sat or paced in silence. She sent two texts, one to her parents saying that she'll explain when she gets home, but that she was fine and safe. The second text was to Tom saying ‘I saw it.’ Since then, it was either crying, sleeping or sitting quietly with Maddy or Tiffany, who kept coming in trying to make her eat something. Abbie even had come in and offered to bring up the Nintendo to play some Mario Kart, but saw how she was and just sat next to her on the bed and talked about her job and how annoying it can be sometimes. After Abbie left (y/n) rolled over in bed, hiding under multitude of blankets, and flipped her phone over to look at her phone notifications and seeing Tom had responded and texted multiple times since then, she had to call him and get this conversation over with. Tiff, still in the room, saw and patted her leg as she left the room, knowing this was a private conversation, but letting her know that she was right outside if she needed anything.

Tom answered before the first ring ended.

“Are you safe?” he asked before you could even open your mouth.

“Yeah, I’m safe, and I’m okay. I just finished crying for 20 minutes for the fifth time today though, so I don’t really know how okay I am. But that’s a….” You trailed off, clearing your throat. “Are you safe and okay?”

“Yes, my agent made sure I was able to stay here underwraps until this all blows over…..” he paused, taking a deep breath before continuing, “Speaking of which, we need to talk about this.”

(y/n) closed her eyes, feeling tears threatening to fall again. “I know.”

Tom rubbed his face, “First off, has anyone figured out where you are?”

“No, I’m still staying with Jacob’s parents, I’m supposed to leave in a week. I gotta figure that out.” she replied.

“Okay, I mean the picture was kinda blurry so if you wear your mask the entire time you’re in the airport not even take it off to eat, and wear a hat, wear your hair differently you can probably go undetected.” He informed her, some of the ways he was given when he first became famous and wanted to fly under the radar. He heard her sigh and bit his lip. “I’m sorry, I should ask how you are feeling about this. Be honest please.”

(y/n) thought she was fine, but really, how can you be okay when something like this happens. She cleared her throat and pushed through the panic that tried to stop her. Her thoughts got the best of her and started talking.

“Tom, listen, I don't know why I thought this was a good idea to continue being soulmates. Look! I can’t do math above algebra, I don’t know any other languages, I only graduated high school, don’t know how I did that even, never went to collage. Hell, I work retail for just over minimum wage! I don’t have over $3,000 in my bank account, I don’t have the Hollywood body, or skin. For fuck’s sakes I live with my parents still, I even share my closet with my youngest sister! I don’t know how to cook or bake, I burnt my wrist one time taking cookies out of the oven. I can’t play any instruments, I can’t act, nor can I sing. I don’t know anything about Shakespeare, which, isn't that like one of your favorite things in the world? I’m not at all cut out for you and the world is letting it be known. We enjoy completely different everythings!  They are right and you know it, god how could you even think I’m right for you?!  I thought soulmates are supposed to have similar views or likes on everything. We are completely different from each other, ” She sighed heavily, sitting down on Tiff’s couch. There was silence for a long while, she bit her lip in worry realising what she just word vomited out and added a timid, “T-Tom?”

She heard Tom make a slight noise before silence fell over the phone again. She rubbed her eyes with the heels of her hands as she waited, a stress headache coming on. She didn’t know what to do, the comments, the talk shows, the blogs, basically on every social media, everyone was talking about the comparisons, or lack thereof, between the two and how in the world are they soulmates, and the age gap that’s the main topic for everyone.  Why did she think that continuing this soulmate was a good idea with Tom, everyone in the world are against it. She didn’t even get to tell her parents about this, god this is awful.

Tom cleared his throat quietly, “(y/n), is this how you really feel?” His voice was timid, almost sad. He was sitting in his hotel room alone. He didn’t dare go out right now, thankfully able to move all his auditions virtually so he didn’t have to go anywhere. He knew if he stepped one foot out of his hotel he’d be swarmed by paps and fans. He wanted to be with (y/n) so much, to help her through all this, but because of this godforsaken waitress had to post a picture of them on every social media. For someone who’s never been in the public eye, this is the worst way to be introduced to the world, being seen holding hands with Tom Hiddleston, one of the public’s heartthrobs, even worse. He took a breath and continued, “I’d understand if it is, but if this is because of this whole fiasco, please don’t do this. Just wait a week...or two    and all this will blow over and something else will take everyone’s interest off of this.”

“Tom, you don’t know how tumblr works, I do. I’ve been on that godforsaken site for over 5 ½ years.” She quipped, “nothing is ever forgotten.”

He rolled his eyes at that before widening, “You have a….nevermind doesn’t matter right now. No I don’t know, but listen to me (y/n) I can put out a statement to leave us alone as we try to figure this out. Anything, just….” he stopped, clearing his throat and running his hand through his hair, “please don’t leave me, you are my soulmate. I want to be with you, okay? Not anyone else, I swear.”

“What about Betty White?”

“Okay, well if Betty White has suddenly become my soulmate then of course.” he replied back.

“I’d kill you, you know, if you chose me over Betty White. She’s a national treasure, I’d give you up for her, if I was her soulmate.” She softly laughed.

“(y/n), I’m serious, you are my soulmate and I yours, I want to get to know you. I want to see you again, I want to be able to wake up in the morning, in the future, and see you sleeping next to me. I want to bring you coffee every morning, I want to give you a kiss goodnight every night before bed, I-I want to meet your family, and meet your two younger siblings, I want to meet your two kittens. I want to see what your favorite movies are, I wanna show you my favorite Shakespeare play. I want you to know everything about me and I want to know everything about you, just...please, just don’t leave me before we have a chance to be with each other.” He heaved a sigh.

(y/n) fell silent, she couldn’t reply. How can you say something, when you don’t know what to say or even think anything. She stood up from the couch and started walking the length of the room, her eyes filling with tears. “I-I…” she started to hyperventilate

Tiffany paced past the door, backtracking and peeped in, seeing (y/n) trying to not sob on the phone and her breathing erratically. She rushed in and took the phone from her. “Tom? Can I have her call you back in five minutes? She’s hyperventilating.” Before he could reply he heard a click on the other end.

Tom slumped back into his chair and rubbed his face, a minute passed before he slammed his phone onto the desk that was in his hotel room. Tom stood up and walked to the window that overlooked Central Park. After their coffee shop date he had to go down to NYC for a week for more auditions and he was going to try and go back to where (y/n) was staying to see her one more time before they both went back home. He looked down over Central Park, summer was turning into fall so all the trees were just starting to turn. He took a deep sigh and stared at the multitude of people walking in the park. The horse drawn carriages with couples sitting in them on the road, the loved up couples holding hands walking through the park, the families playing in the field, the people having picnics, everything was reminding him of (y/n) and what could be lost if she didn’t want this. If she didn’t he would let her go and be okay with it, well not really but would be okay in time. But if he could just get to her and be able to talk face to face and be able to just---

The phone started to ring interrupting Tom’s thoughts. He dived for the phone, tripping over his computer cord. He flipped his phone over and saw (y/n)’s name staring back at him. He clicked the green button and brought the phone to his ear. “(y/n)?”

“I’m so sorry Tom.” Her voice filtering through his phone. “It all just hit me at once.”

He shook his head, even though she couldn’t see him. “Are you okay?”

She smiled into the phone. “Yes, I’m fine. Tiff was able to help me calm down.” She fiddled with her fingers, still nervous. “To-Tom, I want to continue this, I-I just am not knowing how to feel. I know we had the conversation at the coffee shop, but I didn’t even get 12 hours to think about it before it all blew up on m-us. I mean I didn’t even get to tell my parents about this, though I don’t think they would’ve found out about it unless my mom’s close friend wouldn’t have said anything. Anyways, I’ve gotten messages from second cousins and family members, and friends who I haven’t talked to in years keep trying to reach me and I’m sick of it!” She stopped, sighing, “Sorry, it’s just I have not only my family and friends, but the whole world trying to tell me, how can you be my soulmate and giving me their opinions. You’re at least used to this, but I’ve never even been in a newspaper! This is all crazy and I’m trying to be calm and ignore everything. But then you said those sweet amazing things that you want to do with me and I-I want that too, just I need you to be patient, and I know I’ll have these bursts of crazy freak outs and I just need you to be okay and help me through it. I want to be your soulmate too.” Winded, she laid down on her back on the couch and put her feet in the air trying to distract herself.

Tom grinned and pumped his fist into the air, before sighing happily, “(y/n) I will wait for you forever, I will come to you as soon as possible and we can talk even more. I ca- I can clear my schedule for the next two weeks, I can fly back with you and I can stay at a hotel and we can talk then too. Anything you want to do, I will do it. If you want me to fly back to England I will, anything.”

“I would love for you to come fly home with me, but if you do the story will be just as talked about then as now. We can’t be seen together, I still have to figure out how to get home with no one noticing who I am, if you came with me it would just make things worse. Sorry, don’t take that the wrong way please.”

Tom snorted, “if anything I should be apologizing for everything.”

(y/n) shook her head. “No, this was not your fault, it's the damn waitress who decided to blab and feel like she has this whole thing above you.”

“I know.”

“Listen, if you can figure out a way to get flown into my local airport, it just opened back up. I know a couple famous people have had their airplane stopped there to get fuel, if you could get an airplane to divert there and drop you off or however they do it, I don’t know I'm not rich. Anyways if you could get there, I could pick you up and then I can get you to our nicest hotel in town and we can see each other, and you could meet my parents and younger siblings. I don’t know about my older siblings, we’re in the middle of a fight, too long to explain, they probably think that this is all fake anyways.” (y/n)’s voice sounded excited and that made Tom’s heart skip a beat.

He didn’t even think for a second before replying, “I can book with a private jet company that I use and I can have them fly me there, you tell me when you get home and I’ll book for the next evening so we don’t have to be seen.”

He put his phone in between his ear and shoulder, stood up and grabbed his computer from the bed and opened it. Typing in the company’s name and logging in his information, looking at flights from a week out. “What day are you flying out?”

“The seventeenth, I fly out at noon, have a layover in Detroit, arrive around six o’clock, and then it’s an hour plus drive home. Can never get Delta to fly into my city’s airport.” She grumbled playfully. “But they do private flights and like three flights to Florida.

“So does the eighteenth around midnight work to fly in?”

“If I make it home without anyone noticing me, most definitely.” She stretched her back on the chair. “Tom?”

“Yes, darling?” She heard keyboards clicking in the background.

(y/n) didn’t know her heart could flutter like that. “I-I’m sorry, for saying all that. I didn’t realize I had all those worries about us. When you asked what I was feeling all about this, it just…..word vomit ya know.” She scrunched her face realising what she just said. “See, like right now I’m cringing over saying word vomit because of your upbringing, it's just the huge difference of our upbringing and it scared me and still does, but I just had a massive freak out and I am so sorry.”

“(y/n), please do not be sorry, I’m so glad you were able to tell me all that, which we will talk about, but I want it face to face, not over a phone okay. I want to be in the car or the hotel room, where it’s just the two of us and no one can interrupt us and we can just talk...again.” he huffed a laugh. “There’s been a lot of talking recently.”

“Yes, not a lot accomplished from it though.” She giggled.

Tom’s phone beeped, he pulled it away from his ear and looked before sighing. “(y/n) I have to go, it's my agent calling and I have to take this. Listen, I will call you tomorrow, if you’re okay with that. Are--Are you okay with that?”

He heard (y/n) laugh, god her laugh was like…”--ourse I’m okay with that.” He shook his head.

“Okay, I will call you tomorrow afternoon then, goodnight (y/n)” He hung up and answered his agnet’s call.

(y/n) took a deep sigh and stood up, she walked over to the door and saw that Tiffany was still sitting outside the door. She slid down the wall and sat next to her, her face with a smile telling Tiffany how it went without her saying a word. They sat there for an hour in silence, Maddy startling them when she came up the stairs to tell them it was time for dinner. (y/n) didn’t see the few tears that escaped Maddy’s eyes as she headed back downstairs, grateful that the outcome of that phone call was good. Around the dinner table that night the Anderson family hadn’t seen (y/n) that happy in a long time.

Tom, on the other hand, was not happy. He was furious in fact, after an hour long conversation with his agent that ended with some bad news. He didn’t know what to do and how to give his agent the right answer. He could either get an amazing gig for a long amount of time that is in one of his dream locations and make his relationship with (y/n) worse just when the puzzle pieces were all sorted out or he could decline the job and go to (y/n) and spend time with her. He sat in his dark hotel room thinking about the options, the Central Park lights making a warm glow on his face. He sighed, noting the time and decided to have a night of rest before responding to his agent. He grabbed his phone and sent out a text.

Goodnight my darling. <3
