Chapter Text
"You have two choices. There's been a new program introduced for inmates. Your first choice? Go to prison and…"
Despite himself, he inhales. A shaky inhale.
"... and get the death penalty. Or, you can work with me and Detective Walnut undercover on this case."
Almond sets down a thin case file on the desk. The person seated across him picks up the file, eyes still locked with the detective. After a few seconds of eye contact, they pick up the look down and read the file. They grin coyly.
"My, my~ detective! Did you specifically want me in this case? I am one of the most famous gays after all! And you- oh you sly detective! This is a date, isn't it?"
Roguefort teases, still skimming over the case details. Interesting, he thinks. A cruise ship company being accused of hate crimes; specifically, homophobia. The cruise director, along with many of the stewards are being suspected of murdering over twenty people who identify under LGBTQ+. Honestly… why the hell are people like this? Well, they know why- people can be ignorant and unaccepting, assholes.
"Wh- no! Do you see what situation you're in!? I haven't even-!"
Almond lowers his voice, rubbing his temples.
"-I haven't even arrested you. I know what the system is going to do to you. They're going to kill you, do you hear me? Kill you. There's been a new program for criminals if they seem fit for reintroduction into society, an officer can decide the 'trial run' for helping the criminal. If you want to help me, I'll get you into this program."
"But why? Seriously, we've been playing cat and mouse for over five years. Now you're helping me after you - and your daughter have been on my case for years."
Roguefort asks inquisitively. Almond sorta answered his question. However, they're petty, he wants to hear the words they want to hear from Almond's mouth.
Almond already regrets not cuffing Roguefort on the spot. He's not going to do that, even if he says no to his offer, Almond will find some way to keep them out of the system. It's ironic, really. Almond is a detective, he's been one for about seven years. He was an officer before that. Time after time, he's seen what happens to people he's caught after they've been arrested. One case specifically made him take a five month break from work. He arrested a girl four years ago, he arrested her for some theft. From his memory, the theft was pretty petty, along the lines of a few burn phones. However, the case became much, much worse. She got blamed for being a drug dealer, even the blame of a murder two years prior got pinned on her. It was obvious the girl was only guilty of theft. She was tried as an adult at only sixteen. She got seventy-four year in prison. She would be eligible for parole after fifty years. Her entire life will be spent in prison. That teen girl got her entire life ruined by one thing. How could justice fail a child so terribly? He still remembers the guttural scream from the girls' family member, her grandmother. That case ruined him for months. It still haunts him often. There are many other cases he's worked on that have ended in tragedy. Call him distanced, but now, the only thing that would hurt him now is if someone close to him gets an even worse fate. Which that's exactly what would happen. Almond knows. He knows from his years of experience what would happen to Roguefort if he turned them in. They would get the death penalty.
"Detective? Hello…?"
Roguefort taps the restaurant table. Almond looks back at him from the window he was glancing out. There aren't many times where Roguefort has seen Almond look unsettled. They can count those times on one hand.
"Sorry. I was thinking."
"Not good things I'm sure."
Almond turns his head again, gee, the window is just fascinating. No, it's totally not pitch black outside. The time being about twelve midnight. Roguefort taps the table again, lips pursed.
"Honestly, detective. You'd think when talking to a very good looking person like myself, you would pay attention to your date!"
"For the last time, this is not a date!"
Almond needs more coffee. He needs coffee. If he's being honest, he needs alcohol. He won't take the latter- he only pulls out the alcohol in dire situations. This situation hasn't become dire, yet.
"Well, anyway-"
Roguefort waves their hand dismissively, as if Almond's declaration this isn't a date is completely ignored. Which it is.
"-you still never answer my question, detective."
"... What question."
"Why do you even care what happens? Like I said, you've been chasing me for years. You got me. Why does it matter to you now?"
Roguefort knows if he really wanted to, they could just disappear in a blink. It's a signature move that they've developed in his years of thievery. He knows that Almond must know this as well. It still does puzzle Rougefort, he hates being the one confused. Why does Almond care? There have been points where the detective has covered for them, even defended them from other detectives. Roguefort thought that Almond only did that to enhance the chase- which isn't something that Almond would do. He just wants things done and over with.
"Who do you think I am, Rougefort? I've seen so many things that I wish I could unsee. I'm not numb to this stuff. I don't know what you think of me, but I care about you. I care about you and what would happen to you if you were sitting in a cell right now."
"Almond. I don't know what you think I think of you. Whatever you think is wrong. I know… okay? I know."
Roguefort sets down the file on the table, which he was gripping because the file is now crinkled on the sides. They're petty, they wanted to hear those words from the detective. But… actually hearing it really is a shock. If he thinks about it, they really shouldn't be surprised that Almond cares. It's still surprising, a nice surprise, but a surprise nevertheless. Roguefort grabs Almond's hands across the table, with their thumb, they rub the top of Almond's calloused knuckles. They've done this a few- many times in the past. It became something that he would do when Almond wasn't chasing them down- and he wasn't in the middle of stowing away precious jewels. Roguefort would occasionally come to visit Almond, still does. It became a regular thing, Roguefort coming over whenever Walnut was at school. He realizes that sounds a little… dirty. Which… well… there have been some times- they're letting their mind wander. Redirecting their thoughts, he realizes that Almond's hands have more calluses than the last time he's held them. Which really isn't too long. A week at most. It's probably their fault. After all, the past few chases have been more… strenuous than the ones in the past. If an outsider looking in took a glance at their thoughts, the onlooker would think something terribly lewd. That onlooker… wouldn't be wrong.
"...thanks."
Almond sighs, not moving from the rather domestic hand-holding. Almond isn't a fan of PDA, emphasis on 'public'. He would never tell anyone this, but he's touch starved. His ex wife- and mother of Walnut, indulged in Almond's non-verbal wishes. He, again, would never talk about that. His ex could just read him like a book, many people, he realizes; can read him like a book. He does wonder how Latte is doing, she was one of the sweetest people he ever met. He just misses her presence. Would Almond want to get back with her? No. Those bridges were burned- on both sides long ago. Almond feels a kick to his ankle, he looks back to Rougefort. He feels a little guilty, he's been caught multiple times staring off into the oblivion. From the look on Rougefort's face, they don't seem to mind. Under some different circumstances, Almond is sure that Roguefort would not be so patient with him as he is today.
"Alright, detective. I'll take up your offer. I'll help you with the case. You obviously need me, detective. The culprit or culprits isn't just going to cuff themselves with your kink cuffs while you distantly contemplate your morning coffee. I have to help save your career. However, I will do all this on one condition."
Almond looks at them, brows raised. Shouldn't he be the one giving out conditions because he is the one who's inevitably saving Rougefort's life. Not that Almond would have any conditions. Besides behave. Which Roguefort would definitely say it's some kink thing. Almond never gets a minute of peace over his 'weapon'. Some detectives would use guns, some use batons, Almond wanted to have something that wouldn't hurt anyone but would still get the job done. Thus, he requested his special weapon ended up being a pair of special handcuffs that no-one can break out of. Ever since Roguefort found out about that, he's mercilessly teased Almond from that day since. Almond used the cuffs on them, the teasing became leagues worse. He eventually let Roguefort go, the teasing having given him such a splitting headache that he couldn't get through the paperwork of indicting him. Also the trial program hadn't been introduced yet. Nevertheless, this entire thing is a win for him. Roguefort is going to go with him- ah, the condition.
"Okay… What is it?"
Roguefort grins, letting the tension- which there isn't any- set in. Boy, have they been waiting for this for years.
Almond sighs, again. There comes the- what, seventh splitting headache of today? Roguefort enjoys the melodrama, as if they live in a soap opera. Almond however? He wants things simple. Yet, here he is, holding hands with one of the most famous jewel thieves of all time, of course he wouldn't be a simple person.
"We go on an actual date! Not hang outs at your house or car kisses. I mean a serious date with you and me. Of course, whatever it is, you're paying~!"
Honestly, Almond thought it was going to be much , much worse. Some humiliating thing that Almond would rather not think about again. He's… he's good with a date. He's been on multiple 'dates', if that's what they could be called; couch cuddles, a heated makeout at the back of a pizza place, seeing who could stack the most pingpong balls on their palms. Almond being horrifically drunk that day. But… an actual date does sound good. It would've sounded fine without the pretense of this being a condition. Almond's wallet metaphorically shudders at the thought of possibly spending all his extra cash on one date. If they do ever go on this promised date, Almond will make sure it's a place that has a set price for each person. A theme park, buffet, anything that wouldn't result in Almond being dead broke. Broke by a date, typical.
"... Alright. Sounds good."
Well. That was… slightly unexpected. Roguefort expected at least a little bit of a fight to be put up about this. Almond just goes along with it, great. A little disappointing, Roguefort wanted to tease the detective into a blush- which looks fantastic on the detective.
"That easy? Wow, I didn't realize you were so eager to go on a date with me. Scandalous, detective~!"
"I'm leaving. Goodnight Rougefort."
Almond stands up, making his way out of the diner they both decided to stop at. Roguefort follows immediately after, a coy smile on his face. Almond couldn't leave Roguefort anyway- he has to drive them to Almond's house. Explaining this to Walnut is not going to be a great one. Almond opens up the entrance to the diner, Roguefort walks out first.
"Eugh, burrrr! It's so cold! Goodness, detective, it's freezing."
Oh my god please give me your coat. Roguefort thinks to himself, they give Almond the sweetest look they could give. Which, it's quite a stunning glance, he isn't a heart stealer for nothing. Well, they would be giving that look to Almond, if Almond was even looking at them. Instead, Almond is shrugging off his- oh this man. They didn't have to use their gorgeous giles on Almond, he already wanted to help them.
"Here, will this help?"
Almond hands his overcoat to Rougefort, who is shivering. Almond told him not to wear such a thin sweater. Roguefort didn't listen, fashion over practicality, they said. Roguefort takes the coat, grateful. The cold weather really doesn't affect Almond too much. People always laugh about it and say he's just like his namesake- Almond. He supposes that may be true.
"You aren't any fair! You should be more mean! You should say no and then look into my beautiful face and suddenly, you're compelled to hand me your coat because I am just so stunning!"
Roguefort complains. He pulls Almond's coat around his shoulders. When on earth did it get so cold?! It's freezing! Granted, it's around one in the morning, but still! They hear Almond huff, he opens up the passenger side door for Rougefort. Damn this gentleman. Why do they have to find the very last living gentleman on this planet. Well, Roguefort is the most of a gentle'man'; there isn't a gender neutral term for that- unfortunately.
Almond starts up the car the second he sits down. He turns on the AC, turning up the heat. He pulls out his phone and calls Walnut, he knows she's awake; she makes it a habit to stay awake until he comes home. One ring, two ring, three-
"Dad? Are you coming home? It's late!"
"Don't worry, Walnut, I'm on my way right now."
"Erm… okay. Just- when you get home… there uh- there's a surprise at home!"
A surprise? Surprise can mean many different things in Almond's book. Either his cat took a huge shit on the floor and Walnut doesn't want to clean it up. Or, there's some elaborate gift basket on his doorstep. Then again, Almond has a huge surprise for Walnut. She is going to despise it.
"... are you okay? Is this a good surprise? Do I need to take my xanax?"
"Uh… yeah I'm fine. I… well? Maybe you should, just in case."
Oh jesus. Almond should've just had dogs. His child is going to end him. What in god's name is happening at his house? Almond speeds up a bit, just five miles over the limit, it's fine. His house is only three minutes away.
"... I'm going to be over there soon. Don't do anything rash."
"Okay dad… Just don't freak out!"
The phone hangs up.
"That sounded bad… do you want me to go in your house first?"
"Right, and give my daughter a heart attack. She's just like me, anything anxiety inducing will send her off for hours."
"You're right! Just like you!"
Roguefort teases. Poor Almond, he thinks. The poor guy really has to deal with some shit sometimes. Roguefort definitely is not one of Almond's problems. Roguefort is a bright sunshine, shining on Almond's day.
Almond pulls into the driveway, he parks sloppily, it doesn't matter. Almond damn near flies out of his car. He runs up the steps to his apartment. He pauses and turns back around, he points at Rougefort.
"Stay here, and do not move… please."
Roguefort salutes, grinning. They just hope that whatever is going on inside isn't too bad.
Almond unlocks the door and-
"Surprise!"
Almond drops his keys. Well shit, this is one of the last things he would expect. Inside his own home stand Latte, who's holding one of those mini confetti cannons, she pops it on Almond. Surprised and covered in confetti.
"Latte… it's… it's great to see you again."
"It's great to see you too! I was abroad with my brother for the past three years! I just got back yesterday! Eeee I'm so glad to see you again! I hope you don't mind I came in! My brother and his boyfriend are here too!"
Wait… is that Latte? Roguefort knows that voice. It's definitely her. Roguefort didn't mind Latte back when she was married to Almond. Sure, there was just a tiny bit of jealousy from them, not a lot… sure. He doesn't hold anything against her, though. They were there during Almond and Latte's divorce, from what he saw, it was peaceful. Or, as peaceful as divorce can possibly be. Part of him wants to waltz up and throw their arm on Almond and proudly declare all the things that have happened between the years that Latte's been gone. They won't do that, out of sheer willpower. Also because he is sure that would bury Almond six feet low. He will admit though; it does mildly annoy them that Latte more or less strolled in like she owns the place. For once, they're going to do what Almond tells them to. For now.
"Ah… that's fine. What brings you by, anyway?"
Latte smiles, brightly. She pulls out five shimmering yellow pieces of paper from her purse.
"I bought tickets! Tickets for all of us to go on a cruise! I think it would be so great, all of us, hanging out like old times!"
Almond gives an awkward smile back, unsure how to deal the news. Almond recognizes the tickets instantly, he already bought three of them. One for him, Walnut, and Rougefort. He already assumed that Roguefort would agree to work with him. Almond didn't expect Latte to arrive with a five- it's going to be a six person cruise trip. He feels guilty, Latte bought these tickets for fun; Almond bought them for an undercover assignment. He knows these tickets are non-refundable.
"Well… thank you for this, it sounds great but I already bought tickets to that exact cruise."
"Really!? Awh, man! I'll just hand these extra two out to other people I guess. Why're you going on a trip, a vacation? Without being forced!? Gee, Almond, you've changed so much!"
Latte whines, giggling all the while. Almond smiles back at her- it feels like old times just speaking with her.
"Well, no, actually. I'm going for some undercover work. That cruise ship is suspected of hate crimes."
"That's the detective I know! But… really? Oh gee, maybe I should just hand out all these tickets. I know the last thing my brother would need is something like that. It took forever to convince him to take a vacation!"
Roguefort can't take it, they cough. It's quiet enough that Almond could just hear him. They haven't gotten over their tiny jealous tendencies apparently. Latte's crew is probably going with them, no matter what. Roguefort is going to be interacting with Latte anyway, it's time to get the pleasantries over. Or, lack thereof. Latte is a sweet person, honestly, Roguefort is just of the belief that Latte may still have feelings for Almond and may be here to try to get back with him.
"Is someone with you? You can't just leave someone outside like that!"
"Uh…"
"Come on over here! I can't believe Almond is rude enough to leave you out- oh! Rougefort! It's great to see you again!"
Latte walked past Almond, and over to Almond's car. She waves at Rougefort, who returns the wave back with a smile. Of course, the person that Roguefort is slightly jealous of is an absolute angel.
"Mom!? Did you say what I think you said!?"
Walnut's head pops out of the door, her eyes blown wide at what she thought she heard. Oh boy, this day. Almond rubs the bridge of his nose.
"I was just about to get to that…"
Walnut runs out the door, right over to Latte. She points at Rougefort, evident horror on her face.
" Phantom Bleu! What are you doing!? Following my dad home, you creep!"
Roguefort raises his hands up in the air, laughing awkwardly. Latte giggles, hiding her expression with a gloved hand.
"It seems you've found me out, gumshoe. I chased your dad down and decided to watch him from a distance!"
" You! I'm calling the department-"
"That's not necessary, kiddo. I drove them here."
Walnut turns around to face Almond, her jaw drops. She looks back and forth between her father and Rougefort.
"You drove them here!? Why?!"
"That's what I was going to tell you when I got home, but Latte got here so I didn't have time. But Roguefort is going to be working with us on the cruise case."
" Whaaaat!?!"
Walnut looks back and forth even more feverishly, her eyes wide as saucers.
" Daad! You can't do this to me! He's my arch nemesis!"
Walnut points at Rougefort. They make an innocent expression at Almond, as if they're being accused and are innocent. He definitely isn't innocent.
"I'll explain it to you later. They told me they will behave-"
Almond gives Roguefort a glance.
"- and will help with this case."
Walnut stops her foot, turns around, then walks back inside.
" Uncle Espressooo!"
All three of them can hear Walnut whine those words.
"Sooo… you're a detective now? That's cool! It's nice you've changed your ways!"
Latte smiles, turning her attention back towards Rougefort. They grin.
"Well… not really. Our lovely detective here forced me to change my ways!"
Latte whips her head to Almond, her jaw drops. Almond's eyes widen, he shakes his head frantically.
"No! I- ugh… I arrested him and-"
"Ohh… I understand. You're a kind man, Almond."
Almond stays quiet, he looks off to the side. Latte was with him during some of his most difficult cases. Latte's own brother was treated horribly by the system at one point. She of all people would understand how unfair the judicial system can be towards specific people.
"Well! I'm glad you're going with us, Rougefort! You're great to be around! Let's all go inside and relax!"
Latte claps her hands together. She walks back inside Almond's apartment. Almond turns to look at Rougefort.
"Do you want me to get you a hotel? I know it-"
"Oh, detective, I love being with you at your house."
Roguefort walks over and puts a hand on Almond's shoulder, they lean over near Almond's ear.
"And… Latte's right, you know. You are a good man."
Roguefort leans away and walks inside Almond's apartment.
Good gods, why does Almond have to know people like this? They aren't good for his blood pressure. He sighs, then follows inside his own apartment. He closes and locks the door behind him.
Inside, everyone's already getting comfy. Almond can't believe this. Latte's already sitting down on his couch. Espresso sitting down on one of Almond's expensive faux leather chairs. At least Espresso's boyfriend has some respect within him, he's not sprawled out on Almond's furniture like he pays the rent, he's standing. Rougefort's already taking a bite of an apple from Almond's fridge; Walnut glaring at them from the other side of the apartment. This feels like a tv show, Almond thinks miserably.
"Ooh! Almond come here! Let's all watch a movie!"
"You should see my newest movie! It's been-"
"Blessed by the Divine, yeah, yeah. Shut up and let us pick a good movie, Madeleine."
Almond walks directly down the hallway, the opposite direction of the living room. He's had too many events happen today, he's not having any more dramatic events today. It's obvious he isn't needed, all his ' guests' are making themselves at home in his house.
"Goodnight, you all. I'm going to bed."
Almond shuts the door to his room before he can hear any of the complaints of his visitors. He'll know about whatever happens tomorrow morning anyway. Everyone is going on the cruise tomorrow night. He hears someone knocking on his door, with misery, Almond opens the door. Rougefort's the one knocking.
"Hey, detective."
Almond's tempted to just close the door in Rougefort's face, he doesn't.
"... what is it? I think every pizza place is closed now."
Roguefort raises a hand to their chest, scoffing.
"Detective-"
They click their tongue three times, just so offended.
"- what if I just wanted to visit you! You're so kind as to open your house to me, I wanted to… repay the favor."
Roguefort winks. Heat rises up to Almond's cheeks, he opens his mouth then closes it. Roguefort isn't… they can't be serious. There's people here! Almond writhes for words within his mind, he comes up with nothing. It's as if all the brain cells within his head just set fire to the 'normal coherence' files in his head. Roguefort laughs, making the situation worse for the unfortunately evident heat on Almond's cheeks.
"What on earth are you thinking about? Oh… oh my goodness! Detective! Aren't you a lewd man! Putting a dirty meaning to my words!"
The incessant teasing begins, again. Almond can't believe this. He offers Roguefort essentially their life, and what does Almond get in return? A splitting headache and the joy of teasing. Almond closes the door, trying to will the blood from his face out of sheer willpower. Almond doesn't have enough willpower to battle the fury of his blush.
" Detective! I was joking! You can't leave me alone!"
Roguefort isn't alone, obviously. There's four people fifteen feet away from them. They're all sweet people, he knows three of them. The fourth one seems decent. Maybe a bit egotistical, Roguefort can't fault someone for that. He just couldn't help himself with teasing Almond. It's just a little too easy, hell, they got to see the very nice looking blush on the detective's face.
Almond eventually opens the door- about three seconds later. His blush isn't any less evident.
"So… what do you mean by, repay me?"
Roguefort grins.
"Well, detective, there are many ways that an attractive person can pay someone back."
And… Almond's blush becomes painfully worse. He pulls at his shirt collar. Goodness, is it getting hot in here? It's rather hot in here. Roguefort takes a few steps into Almond's room. Almond closes the door behind them.
"Almond. Are you up for this?"
"... yes."
Almond breathes out. He'll admit, this hasn't happened in a while. The… bedroom escapades haven't happened for about two weeks. Almond's been stressed out of his mind with all the recent cases. Rougefort's been trying to reform himself- still stowing away the pretty jewel whenever they get the chance.
Almond grabs Roguefort by the collar of their sweater, he pulls them into a deep kiss. With deft hands, Roguefort unbuttons Almond's shirt. The shirt falls down to the floor. The kiss deepens with a tongue, hands begin to travel over each other's chests. A small sound escapes Almond. They both part away for just a moment, already becoming flush-faced.
"Detective~!"
Roguefort says in a teasing tone, their own face becoming rose from just Almond being himself. His hair mused, eyes half lidded. With as much care as a man wanting sex can be, he shoves Roguefort down on the bed. Almond straddling them. He fumbles with his pant buttons, fingers not as nimble as they usually are. Roguefort gets the hint and effortlessly unbottons his pants. With hands a bit more steady, Almond unbuttons Roguefort's pants. Them both blushing like freshly bloomed roses.
Almond leans past Roguefort and opens up a drawer, a small bottle and a condom pack in his hands. He looks ddownat them and his breath nearly stops. Roguefort is a gorgeous person. Heart-stoppingly beautiful.
"A-are you ready?"
Almond's own voice sounds more low and deep than it usually is. Roguefort looks up at him from the bed and winks.
"Oh my god, yes."
The condom is opened with teeth.
" Okay! I heard about your new movie, Maddie! We all talked about how good of an actor you would be!"
Latte claps her hands together. She turns up the volume on the tv preemptively, she saw Roguefort go into Almond's room. She's had her suspicions from face-times with Walnut, even from her phone calls with Almond. They seem sweet together, she thinks Roguefort is good for Almond. However, goodness knows what happens when two sexual people who are interested in each other are alone.
"Haha! Thank you! I was hired on the spot for my audition for the lead!"
"Riiight, right. Did they shower you in gold and roses?"
"They showered me with roses at the premiere night!"
Espresso groans, Latte giggles, and Madeleine grins proudly. Walnut pulled out her ds, already playing her favorite game; Rune Factory 4.
"It was for a horror movie, right? I thought you were going to act as the lead in an action movie!"
"Well… I thought about it, but I wanted to do something that would truly stun the next generations for decades!"
Latte opens up Netflix on the smart tv, oh, sweet Almond, he still has the same password he had five years ago. Latte's almost surprised his account hasn't been stolen. Such a sweet man, his password is 'Walnutnlatte1.'
"Hah! Really? Are you sure the audience wasn't trying to bribe you out of the theater?"
"Espresso! You told me I'm an amazing actor too!"
"N-no I didn't! You just imagined it!"
Latte finds the new movie that Madeleine worked on, it's in the today's top ten… Wow! Neither Latte nor Espresso have seen Madeleine in awhile, he's been off acting. Espresso saw him a lot more than Latte did, though. They live together, after all. Latte's seen some of Madeleine's small works before, he seems like an amazing actor. Latte really does adore Madeleine, he's an absolute bear of a sweetheart. Back when Espresso was blamed for a crime, Madeleine risked his career and did every single thing that he possibly could do to help Espresso. Latte's sure that if Madeleine wasn't there back then, Espresso would be rotting away in a cell.
"Ooh! It's rated R! There isn't anything scandalous in here, is there?"
Madeleine raises both his hands in the air, laughing.
"Oh, gods no! I wasn't going to be in the movie if there was! I've already got everything I would ever need here-"
Madeleine hugs Espresso's shoulders. Espresso laughs and puts both his hands on top of Madeleine's.
"- but no. The reason it's rated that is for violence, scary imagery, what people call the 'usual' for horror movies. Except this one is the best one ever! The Divine-!"
"Ugh, you ruined the mood, now."
Espresso rolls his eyes. Latte laughs. She hears the telltale sounds of a bed creaking- oh. Oh goodness.
"Walnut, baby! It's time to go to sleep, sweetheart. It's getting late and us grown ups are about to watch a scary movie!"
"B-but mom! I'm in the middle of my game!"
Oh, Latte's a weak willed woman. She smiles shyly. Walnut gives her that signature wide-eyed, sweet look.
"Weeeell… you can stay up. But! You have to be in your room, okay?"
"Thanks mom!"
Walnut kisses Latte on the cheek and runs off to her room. Thank goodness for that, because once Walnuts door closes, the painfully loud sound of a bed creaks. The walls are horribly thin in this apartment. Latte pities Walnut back when Latte was married to Almond. Until the last seven months of their marriage they had sex almost every night.
"Err… is your ex…?"
" Ooh , hush, Essy! We're watching Madeleine's pride and joy!"
"I have to warn you both, though! This movie had people running out of the theater in terror!"
"Oh, no it didn't. They were running out in horror from your bad acting."
"Babe!?"
Latte laughs, and starts the movie, she has it turned up pretty loudly. It's a little awkward hearing your ex husband having sex a room away. Latte isn't just going to barge in and ask to keep it down.
After three hours- the movie is a long one. Latte turns off the tv, speechless. She turns to look at Madeleine, eyes wide. Espresso stands up and walks into the kitchen for a minute.
"Oh… oh my goodness, Maddie! I thought you were being dramatic when you were talking about that! That was really, really disturbing! I don't know how you could've worked for this company, let alone continue to stay in character the whole time!"
"Haha! See?! I told you! I'm an amazing actor!"
Madeleine proudly declares, a huge proud smile on his face. Latte is almost jealous of her brother, her boyfriend is the sweetest ever. Latte would never date the guy, first of all, it would be horribly wrong, dating your siblings' ex. Second of all, he's a tad too egotistical for her, but he's a sweetheart nevertheless. Also, there is this wonderful thing called sexuality.
"I… I can't watch your movies if they're all like this."
Espresso walks back into the living room, a cup of coffee in his hands. He honestly looks visibly shaken. Latte doesn't blame him, Madeleine did a stunning performance. His character died at the end of the movie, it was graphic. From the corner of her eye while she was watching the ending, she saw Espresso grip Madeleine's arm tightly.
"I didn't know they wanted to kill my character at first! I think it worked great!"
"It did… but it's just weird, seeing you, even though on a screen, seeing you dead just…"
Espresso shudders. Madeleine stands up and walks over, Espresso pulls him into a hug. Latte smiles to herself, she loves these two so much. Latte glances at the clock, ho boy… it's four in the morning. They've all got a trip to make tomorrow evening. Well, they'll be in the car by morning.
"Alright, boys. It's getting really late. I'm going to sleep with my daughter. You guys can take the couch!"
"Okay, goodnight sis- ah, shit. It is late."
Espresso comments, glancing at the clock. Latte grins and gets off the couch. She quietly opens the door to Walnut's door, there her daughter is, fast asleep on her bed, her ds still turned on and in the middle of her game. Latte walks over, saves the game and turns off the game system. She sees the bean bag she used to sleep on when Walnut would have nightmares and help her sleep at night. Latte smiles. She lays down on the bean bag and in a few minutes, she's asleep.
The loud drawl of Almond's ringing alarm drags him from his restful sleep. He blindly reaches out to turn off the alarm-
" Owww…!"
A familiar voice cries out. Almond's eyes fly open. The events of last night catch up with him. Oh. Almond looks at Rougefort, who is just waking up. Almond sees a few red marks on their neck and looks away.
"Sorry. I was trying to turn off the alarm."
Roguefort grins, he turns off the alarm without even looking at it. It's been awhile since Rougefort's slept with Almond, but not that long that he forgot how to turn off that blistering alarm. They lean over and rest their head on Almond's shoulder. Almond smiles softly.
"Oh, Almond, you're going to have to carry me everywhere~! My weak ankles just can't hold me up after last night!"
Roguefort teases, winking. Almond sighs, he can't believe this. He's been awake for only a few minutes- and he's already being ruthlessly teased. Of course, he supposes this is slightly his fault. It's just that Roguefort sometimes- well, always looks stunning.
"Ohhh Almond, Rougefort! It's time to start packing for the trip! We've got a cruise to arrive on by tonight!"
Latte knocks on the door, saying her words just loud enough they would be able to hear her if they both were awake.
"Thank you~! We'll be a minute! As I was saying, Almond, you don't mind carrying me, right?"
Almond laughs, he nods.
"Yeah… are you okay? I uh- I'm sorry-"
Roguefort puts their fingers on Almond's lips, cutting him off. He laughs and gives Almond a kiss on the cheek.
"Don't apologize, Almond. We both wanted this, I just love teasing you."
Roguefort winks. He stands up and walks over to Almond's wardrobe. They put on some of Almond's clothes then walk out the door. Almond smiles to himself- like a lovesick fool.
"Goodmorning, Rougefort! Did you sleep well?"
Latte hands them a cup of coffee, they take it, they prefer their coffee to an 8:2 ratio of creamer and coffee. Latte makes the best coffee, she's just like her namesake, Latte. They take a sip and smile. If Latte notices their slightly noticeable waddle from Rougefort, she doesn't say anything. She definitely notices.
"Well, usually we don't have company over, so I sometimes forget how paper thin those walls are."
"Oh I know! It's terrible how thin these walls are! You'd think contractors would take into consideration just what type of people who rent apartments!"
Roguefort and Latte talk back and forth about architecture, them both being slightly ill-informed because goodness- Latte's a teacher and Rougefort's a thief. They're sipping their coffee together, talking topics slowly turning over to the topic they both share- shared; Almond.
"Oh my god, look at them. Socializing at this ungodly hour."
"Sunshine, it's ten in the morning."
"Exactly! I can't speak until I have eleven cups of coffee."
Espresso sighs dramatically, taking a long sip of his coffee. Madeleine drinking a glass of cold milk.
Almond walks in, taking a few minutes to pack two suitcases, he propped them both against his bedroom door. It's obvious who's whose, light blue; Roguefort, brown; Almond. He's wearing his usual outfit, white button up, brown slacks. He's obviously not needed, again. This whole house doesn't need his input, or permission, apparently. Latte and Rougefort, elbows on his kitchen island, chatting while drinking coffee. Espresso and his boyfriend, all cuddled up on his couch. Walnut is either asleep or on her ds, he'll check in on her in a minute. Almond should just go back to sleep. He isn't going to- goodness he wants to.
"Ooh, Almond! You're up! Both you two slept in today!"
"Yeah, yeah. Just hand me my-"
Latte hands him a steaming mug of coffee.
"- coffee… thanks."
Latte nods, taking another sip of her cup. Almond turns around, going into Walnut's room. He knocks three times, he can hear the sound of pillows shuffling, a specific child throwing something under her pillow.
"Come in!"
Walnut squeaks. Almond opens the door, Walnut's laying down, doing an extremely dramatic yawn.
"Whooooh, dad! You came in to see me? Eeh, I'm just so tiiiiired!"
"Walnut. You don't have to hide your game from me, you know you won't get in trouble for that."
"Thanks dad!"
Walnut whips out her ds from under her pillow, flipping sleep mode off. She gives Almond a huge smile, then back to her game. He's lost her now, she's gone to the world of whatever game she's playing- he thinks he hears Animal Crossing.
"Walnut, get your bag packed soon, we're going on that cruise tonight, we're getting in the car in an hour."
"An hour !?"
Walnut booms, she flies out of her bed, her eyes round as saucers. Almond looks at her, confused. Why is she so upset?
"D-dad… you're joking, right?"
"Uh, no…? Why would I be joking? You just have to pack your clothes-"
" Dad ! I'm not like you! I don't just pack seven of the same shirt and the toiletries and out the door! Why didn't you wake me up sooner!?"
Walnut flies out of bed before Almond can answer her cries. She's flung open her suitcase and is already tossing in items. Almond shakes his head then closes the door, walking out.
"Hey, Roguefort, do you need me to take you by your house to get your st-"
"Oh, no, Almond. I already have everything I need here. I've got you, I've got extra of everything I could need, your clothes fit me great."
Roguefort winks at poor Almond, who's face is turning a bright red. Latte giggles, she takes another sip of her drink.
"When did you guys get together? You guys are so sweet, honestly!"
Someone watching from the outside may think that Latte is salty about this, she isn't. Almond was her husband, sure, she even had a child with him. However, she was the one who filed for divorce, it was a joint decision but Latte filed it. They both just fell out of love with each other. Latte's had small relationships here and there but never anything serious since Almond. She's genuinely glad Almond's found someone, she's glad Roguefort found someone. She was always worried about them, worried that one day they would come across a detective that would stop at nothing to capture him, dead or alive. She's glad they found each other, she can tell by how they interact that they are meant for each other.
"Well… we actually aren't. "
"Uh- er…"
Both of them replied at the same time. Almond stammering, Roguefort looking shyly at the detective. Oh dear. They aren't together? Latte was just joking when she asked, she was expecting them to drop a word like 'engagement'. But, no. They aren't even together?
"You two aren't dating? Really? Friends with benefits is what you are?"
"Erm… I didn't even think about our relationship… I just thought it… happened."
" Really?! Almond… you didn't even think about it? Was it just nothing to you? The hand-holding, kissing, sex-"
" No! No, no. I've never not thought nothing about that- about us. I just didn't know how to talk about it with you. I wasn't sure if you just wanted to keep this casual or…"
Almond trails off, suddenly becoming aware of his surroundings. Latte's looking at him, eyes wide. He can see Espresso covering his ears and his boyfriend looking visibly uncomfortable. Roguefort however, they're smiling, a really sweet smile. Almond's face is blush, both from embarrassment at his very what should be private rumblings. Also blushing because the look on Roguefort's expression is quite lovely.
"A- hem… I'm glad you two are… figuring things out but, maybe do it in private?"
Latte feels awkward just seeing these two. It does warm her heart, though. Seeing Almond acting like his old self again makes her so happy. His face bright red after ending up saying something a little too personal in public. She knows Almond really does care for Roguefort, from what she can see, Almond probably loves them.
"... you're right. I- we'll-"
Almond glances at Roguefort, sees his face, then immediately looks away.
"- we'll figure it out in private."
Almond clears his throat, feeling embarrassed.
"Yes, yes we will!"
Roguefort laughs and slings an arm over Almond's shoulder. Almond sighs, still smiling.
"Uhm… anyway. Let's find something to do for the next hour. There's no way that I can witness these two before two p.m."
"Babe... it's ten-thirty."
"Exactly."
Espresso stands up and goes over to the coffeemaker, he pours himself another cup of coffee. Madeleine looks at him, worried for his boyfriend's heart-rate with this much caffeine.
"Actually, I do slightly agree with Essy! We should pass the time until we have to go-"
Latte leans over where she's only within earshot of Roguefort and Almond.
"- but you guys were having an amazing conversation that definitely needs to be continued."
"Don't worry, we will!"
Roguefort grins, he shakes Almond's shoulder. He responds by a heatless scoff.
"Hey, hey, look! There's Spongebob on!"
Madeleine turns on the tv, the iconic yellow sponge on the television. Like a group of captivated children, all five grown adults sit down on the various chairs and couch. Almond leaning against the wall, Roguefort sitting on the nearest chair to the wall. Espresso and Madeleine huddled up back on their spot on the cough. Latte sitting on the only other chair.
For an entire hour, they are all watching the show- only episodes from the first three seasons. Their binge watching season is over because Walnut walks in, complaining at the adults like she's the adult and they're the petulant children.
"Honestly! Look at you guys! We've got a cruise to be on and an important case to solve!"
"Case? What case?"
Espresso turns and looks at Walnut, his brows raised. Walnut steps back, she wrings her hands.
"Uhhh… I thought you knew."
"Uh, no?"
Almond picks up the remote and turns off the tv, just during the best episode. 'Wormy'. Latte clicks her tongue and Madeleine whines like a child. Latte looks over and sees that Walnut is already packed, great! Latte already has her, Espresso, and Madeleine's suitcases are in her trunk. Espresso turns and looks at her.
"What case?"
"Ohh… Well, Essy, don't be upset buuut… the cruise ship is suspected of hate crimes."
" What!?"
Both Madeleine and Espresso say out loud, their eyes wide. Almond walks into his room and pulls out the suitcases, although he's already caused his fair share of drama, he isn't getting involved in this one. If anything gets too out of hand on the cruise ship, Almond has a gun holster on his person, he won't let anyone get hurt on his watch.
"You're telling me this at the last minute? You know what danger that puts me- us in!"
"I know, I know, I'm sorry, Essy! I didn't mean to tell you last minute but you'll be fine! I swear nothing's going to happen to you, or any of us!"
"That's what they all say! That's exactly what that officer said before I got pinned for murder, Latte, murder!"
Espresso yells- the caffeine having an adrenaline buildup for him. He storms out of the apartment. The sound of the backseat door being opened can be heard. Latte knows it's the backdoor because it sounds like an old witch crone when it opens. Madeleine walks out of the apartment right after Espresso.
"Uh… did I say something wrong?"
"No… I just forgot to talk to him, ugh I can be a terrible sister sometimes."
"But you're a great mom!"
Walnut hugs Latte's arm, Latte smiles at her. She feels guilty, gods, that was a presumptuous move of her. Doing that to her brother who's been through a lot within the past year. She sighs.
"Should we switch cars? I can drive your brother and his boyfriend. You can take Walnut and Roguefort."
"No, no, it's okay. I can't let him hold a grudge against me on this cruise trip, it would ruin my consciousness. And you can't just abandon your 'partner' for a six hour drive. Walnut baby, do you have all your stuff packed?"
Latte cuts off the offended gasp from Roguefort at Almond's words. Walnut smiles proudly, lifting her suitcase into the air. No, Latte totally didn't just add in 'partner' she winked at Almond when she said it. Hopefully he gets the hint.
"I'm all ready mom!"
"Okay honey, go and get in your dad's car, we'll be going out soon!"
Latte waves and walks out the door, Walnut following behind. Roguefort stands up from the chair, they have to put their hand down on the chair, a… familiar pain halting their movements. Next time, he's going to ask Almond to think about tomorrow.
"Hey, are you ready?"
Almond walks over, pulling both suitcases behind him. Roguefort smiles, standing still for a few seconds then taking the blue handle from Almond.
"Of course I'm ready! You're going to owe me that date, detective!"
Almond laughs. Roguefort walks in front of him then out the door. Almond locks the door to his apartment, double checking everything is turned off and ready to be gone for a week. He already dropped off his darling pet, Constable Whiskers, with a friend. After checking the door handle one more time to make sure it's locked, Almond gets in his car. Walnut and Roguefort already have both their suitcases in his trunk. Almond turns the key to start his car engine and thus, the six hour journey begins.
"Can I-"
"If you're asking to control my radio, the answer is no. If I have to hear one more pop song when you're in this car."
"But it's Parfait, detective! She's amazing! You've heard her songs, you know how talented she is!"
"Yeah, dad! She's awesome!"
Almond groans. Both passengers, up against him, unbelievable. Almond still has the final say in it, he's driving. He'll be their chauffeur when those two inevitably want to go to McDonald's. Absolutely garbage food, but for some reason, everyone loves it.
"No. Anything besides that."
Roguefort scoffs, shaking their head. Shunned from the radio, again. He hasn't been allowed to even touch the thing in three weeks.
"Ooh, ooh, dad! I have to go to the bathroom!"
"We were at home three minutes ago!"
"I can't control it!"
Almond sighs, he turns into the first gas station he sees. Latte waves at him while she drives by, he waves back.
"Actually, since you're going in there in the first place, will you get me some advil?"
"Are you ok- oh. Yeah, I'll get some for you."
Almond lifts his hand to scratch his face, a flimsy attempt to hide the blush on his face because he realized.
"We'll be back in a minute."
"Okay, don't take too long!"
Roguefort smiles, waving at Almond and Walnut while they walk into the gas station. Roguefort pulls out his phone, mindlessly scrolling through social media.
"Dad! Look! There's a cat squishmallow! Can we get it? Pleeease!"
"I thought you had to use the bathroom?"
"Uh… I do! Bye dad!"
Walnut runs off to the bathroom, Almond shakes his head, laughing quietly to himself. He'll buy Walnut the stuffed animal when she gets out of the bathroom. He stands by the bathroom entrance, just in case. His years of working in the force has made him a much more cautious man.
After about four minutes, Walnut runs out of the bathroom. She looks up at Almond and beams.
"Daaad… please?"
"Okay, okay. I'll buy it for you."
"Yay!"
Walnut runs over to the plush display and she grabs a pink cat, she races back over, excited.
Roguefort peeks out into the gas station, the front wall is all glass, so they can see inside. He smiles a bit to himself seeing the father- daughter duo.
"Hey."
A pound on the car glass makes Roguefort jump in their seat. They look over at the person who's knocking, his heart drops.
"Open the door. Open the door, I know there are children here."
"Why would you need me to do that? We can just talk through this glass."
Roguefort says casually. Internally, they're freaking out. They're tempted to text Almond- no. He can handle this himself. The person he used to work with slams a hand violently on the glass, Roguefort jumps.
" Listen. I'm serious. I know exactly who you're with, I don't want to do this but-"
The person moves their jacket to the side, on the inside is a gun. Roguefort looks at them, eyes wide.
"- I will do what I have to do, open the door."
Roguefort puts their hand on the door handle, what else can they do? If they cause a scene then someone's most likely going to die. They'll just disappear from his ex-coworker the second they get the chance. They open the door, they hear the gun load from the assailant.
"I'm going to have the highest bounty."
" Back up."
The person's head whips up, eyes wide as saucers. Roguefort turns his head slightly, he nearly drops in relief. There's Almond, holding his gun, aimed at the attacker. That person looks back and forth between the car and Almond, they dash. Almond takes off after them.
"Halt in the name of the law!"
Almond yells, ripping out his cuffs from his coat. The runner races in front of him, Almond's faster. The person stumbles a bit, Almond catches up with them-
" Hey! What the fuck are ya doin'!?"
Almond pauses, in front of him, with the criminal is another person with them. This woman looks familiar, he can swear he's seen her from somewhere- irrelevant.
"I'm arresting this person for attempted murder."
" Attempted… murder!? What part of, lay the fuck low, did you not understand, Chili!?"
"Yeah, yeah, I know! I just saw my old rival and had to get payback."
The attempted murder, who was wearing a hood, pulls it down, out pop bountiful red curls. The gears spin in Almond's head, the southern accent, the blond hair, bounty hunter, the other with red hair, has a huge bounty, self-control issues, it all clicks in his head. Chili Pepper and Rye, apparently Chili did not get arrested, as was told for the past seven months. None of this would matter to Almond if this girl didn't just try and murder Roguefort for the dumbest reason. Almond's been a detective for seven years. If she had tried to kill Almond, he would let this go, after he's still alive so it's fine. Sure, Roguefort is too, but Almond isn't going to just drop that.
"Oh my fuckin'... listen, I'm not one for avoidin' the law, work for it ma-self. Would ya consider lettin' her go? I'm gonna give 'er hell for this later."
"Actually, no, she shot my partne-"
"It's fine, really, she failed- obviously."
Roguefort appears seemingly out of nowhere. They put a casual hand on Almond's shoulder. Chili Pepper glares at him, Rye glares at her.
"No, no it isn't fine. She tried to kill you."
Almond looks over at Roguefort, his brows raised. They can't be serious. This certainly is not okay. Almond isn't one to usually cause a scene, but he will. He will on behalf of the people he cares about.
"... can I pay y'all? Yer an officer yerself, I'm sure ya know how shit the system is."
"You aren't giving them any of your money!"
" You're the one who got us into this!"
"It's fine, honestly. Just keep her under control so she doesn't come and try to murder me again."
Roguefort puts an emphasis on 'try'. They nearly laugh seeing Chili get even more irritated. Roguefort pulls Almond back by the arm, everything's fine, he's okay, he doesn't want another messy situation.
"Please, Almond? It's fine. If we make a scene, people could recognize me or the talentless killer here."
"It's not-"
"Please."
Almond looks at Roguefort, who's pouting. Almond sighs, he feels like he's giving in and buying something instead of letting go of a criminal. What a detective he is.
"Just get out of here."
Chili Pepper cheers then leaps off; only to be stopped by Rye ripping her back by her hood.
"Thanks."
Rye bows her hand quickly. With that, she turns around, dragging Chili behind her. The latter screaming incoherent curses.
Almond huffs a sigh, he pulls Roguefort's hand off his shoulder but squeezes it.
"Are you okay? You- you were almost killed…"
"Oh, honestly, detective. I'm fine! F-i-n-e! I knew she wasn't going to kill me, I used to work with her!"
Roguefort shrugs with their available arm. He squeezes Almond's hand back.
"Dad! Phant- R-Roguefort! Are you guys okay!? I didn't call the cops but I was just about to!"
"We're okay, kid. I can still go after them-"
"Oh hush, it's fine. We're okay little gumshoe."
"B-but didn't someone try to shoot you!?"
"Psh, don't worry, it's a usual occurrence! Don't worry!"
"I'm driving us home."
Almond ends the conversation, his free hand pinching the bridge of his nose. Walnut looks at the two then notices something- the hand holding.
"Are you… are you guys holding hands!? You fiend-"
Walnut points at Roguefort, her jaw open.
"- how dare you! Doing… whatever you're doing with my dad!"
Roguefort grins, this is a two in one. Annoy the kid and flirt with the father- perfect. They pull Almond's hand over to their lips and leaves a gentle kiss on the top of his hand. They nearly laugh, seeing both Walnut freak out from the corner of his eye, and the blush spread out on Almond's face.
"Anyway, are we ready to go?"
"Ahem… yes."
Almond clears his throat, hoping that may clear the blood from his cheeks; it doesn't. Roguefort is the first one to get back into the car, Walnut hesitantly follows, her eyes still blown wide. Almond himself is still shaken from that encounter with Chili Pepper, he was terrified he was about to lose Roguefort. He almost shot her right then and there but he didn't. He's glad he didn't- that would have ruined him, his career, and his mental health. He breathes in and out a few more times, counting down from twenty-nine. He eventually follows behind the other two.
"If we have to stop for anything, we're all coming inside- oh, here."
Almond sees a plastic bag on the ground- the things he bought from the gas station a little while ago. He pulls out the bottle of advil and a water bottle, he hands them to Roguefort. The stuffed animal that Walnut wanted so badly is handed to her. With that, Almond gets into the car, Walnut and Roguefort follows suit.
"Thanks dad! I agree, we'll all be safe that way! I can also keep an eye on you!"
Walnut shoots a glare at Roguefort, who smiles innocently at her. They open up the water bottle and pop the two pain meds with a sip of water. Roguefort squeezes Almond's shoulder in thanks.
Thankfully, the car ride with Almond, Walnut, and Roguefort ended up being relatively normal, they all got to their destination without any more hiccups. However the three are a little late.
Latte, Espresso, and Madeleine all also arrive on time, things going smoothly with them. They all arrive first to the parking lot next to the cruise.
"Where are they? Walnut texted me a few times but it's been awhile."
Latte leans against her car, she chews on her bottom lip. Espresso is sleepily waking himself up, they all just got there about ten minutes ago. Madeleine's just hauled out their suitcases, he's pulling all three behind him right next to the front of the car.
"Let's be positive, they're fine! Maybe they found something, sweet Walnut could have seen somewhere she wanted to go, a toy store or something!"
Madeleine positively offers. Latte smiles at him warmly. If he wasn't here right now, Latte would be wallowing in her worry. She wouldn't wake up her sleeping sibling because the poor boy barely sleeps. It's a miracle he's done it recently, Latte is so grateful for Madeleine.
"Thanks, Maddie. I hope so. I just wish they would text me or something. If I text Walnut, it could wake her up, or if I call Almond, it would distract him and he could wreck-"
"Ahh, calm down! They're all okay! There are so many different explanations for what happened! Let's give them another ten minutes and if they aren't here then you should call them!"
"Hah! Now I know why Essy loves you so much, you're a sweetheart!"
"Wha… you guys talkin' 'bout me?"
Espresso climbs out of the car, still wiping sleep from his eyes. Latte grins at him, she is about to give him a hug- Madeleine beats her to it. He wraps his arms around Espresso before he can even fully get out of the car, he yelps in surprise.
"Sunshine! You're up! I missed you!"
"Gah-! Why do you call me that… look at you."
Madeleine pulls away from Espresso, he tilts his head to the side.
"Huh? What'd you mean?"
"Er…"
Espresso awkwardly looks side to side, anywhere except for Madeleine, who still has his hands on Espresso's shoulders. Latte rolls her eyes comically at her brother, her sweet emotionally stunted brother. He's such a sweetheart, just like his boyfriend. They're absolutely perfect for each other and that makes Latte so glad. She used to worry incessantly about her brother, he had times where she would have to call the police just to check in on him. Countless times she would beg Almond to make sure her brother hadn't killed himself. She used to have trouble sleeping, knowing that her sweet, caring brother was struggling with the most serious thoughts. Almond in turn, would worry about Latte, and thus began a cycle of them barely sleeping. Espresso met Madeleine five years ago and then the worry slowly went down.
Latte turns her head from the comically awkward lovebirds, she sees a familiar car pulling into the parking lot. Latte sighs a huge sigh. The hideous orange Volkswagen bug that Latte has grown a fondness for.
"Oh thank goodness! There they are!"
Once the car stops, Latte runs over to greet the trio.
"Where on earth have you three been!? I've been worrying out of my mind for you guys!"
Almond barely gets his car door open before being attacked by Latte's flurry of words. It takes a few seconds for those words to kick in with him, he's horrifically exhausted. Driving for six hours takes a toll on someone, along with the constant anxiety he has. Latte must be in the same shape, Almond thinks to himself. It takes Almond so long that Roguefort and Walnut have already gotten out of the car.
"Well!?"
"Aha… Latte, we just had a slight mishap."
"... what mishap?"
"I was almost murdered!"
" What!?"
Latte yells, her blood runs cold at his words. Obviously Roguefort is okay, they look okay and don't seem too unsettled. Latte takes another glance at Almond, it's obvious he's the one who looks like he was attacked. From what she can see- it's dark outside, save for a few street lamps above the parking lot. Almond's face looks much more pale than usual, his hands are even a bit shaky. Latte chews on her bottom lip, she wishes Almond didn't worry this much.
"Well… I'm glad you're okay, Rogue! Are… are you okay, Almond?"
"Fine."
"Don't worry, I did not let him drive the whole trip. He just drove for the past three minutes, I wasn't going to let him hurt himself with his worry."
"Ah… I see… thanks for taking care of him, Rouge."
Walnut runs over and holds Latte's hand, Latte smiles at her. She turns her head back to Roguefort, who's getting suitcases out of the trunk.
"Take care of him a little more, won't you?"
Roguefort smiles wryly at her, they nod.
"Of course, he's safe with me."
Latte smiles, then is pulled off by Walnut. Walnut, who's freaking out with excitement over the cruise ship in the not-so distant distance.
Roguefort pulls the suitcases out of the trunk. Almond walks over to them. Roguefort lifts his hand, stopping Almond before he even says a word.
"If you want to help, you'll take your own suitcase, it's the lightest of them all because you pack like a man."
"... isn't that sexist?"
"No. You just pack like a man; ten of the same shirts, and eight more of the same pants. Everything is the same; typical."
Almond shrugs, he takes his own suitcase, he tries to grab the others but Roguefort rips them away. They gape at Almond.
"Detective! I'm not going to watch while you work yourself to goodness knows! I am going to be the strong one today."
Almond does give in, him carrying his own suitcase, Roguefort carrying off their own and Walnut's. They catch up with Latte, Walnut, Espresso, and Madeleine.
The walk up to the cruise is a few words less than stunning. The ship a gigantic white giant. It looks like it's got over eleven layers, some of them covered by glass so it's see through. Everyone can see that one layer is a massive golden gilded restaurant. In the middle of the ship is a large open area, a deep pool with an open bar, hundreds of lounges. It looks like a place from a dream. Latte hands all six tickets to the man near the ship. The man smiles and lets them all into the deck, he hands them a map. Almond takes a glance at the map then walks off to the staterooms. Roguefort sees him walking off, they hand Walnut's suitcase with her then he follows Almond.
"Well, we'll see you guys tomorrow morning! Au revoir!"
Roguefort gives one last wave at the other four, Latte and Madeleine both enthusiastically wave. Espresso gives one curt wave, Walnut just glares at him.
"Almond! You can't just leave everyone behind like that, not even a goodbye! You were going to leave me?"
"You don't have to come with me right now, I'm just going to take a nap-"
" No, you're going to sleep. Of course I'm going to stay with you, you can't leave me alone!"
Roguefort whines, Almond shakes his head but there's a small smile on his face. He remembers seeing on the website that any cabin can be picked, they're all the same since everyone pays the same price. Almond finds a stateroom that looks nice, he opens it and… it looks great. A cream bedroom with pastel blue highlights. Almond walks in and sees a fluffy blue duvet on the bed, he throws himself down, his body not even fully on the bed at this point. Roguefort laughs to himself.
"Detective… you can't just fall asleep like-"
Roguefort hears a snore. They close their mouth. He walks over to Almond, brushing a few strands of hair out of his face. Roguefort rests a hand on Almond's cheek for just a few seconds. The sleeping detective quietly snores. Roguefort pulls themself up, they take off Almond's shoes and they throw a blanket on him. Roguefort gets himself ready to go to sleep. They curl up into the large fluffy duvet, them sleeping on top of the bed because if they got under, it would shove Almond off the bed.
Nighttime falls, and everyone is ushered to bed, it's the first night the ship is set to sea.
