A promise made, a promise kept

Summary:

Ruby dreams that Weiss leaves her forever. So Weiss makes a promise that she'll always be by her side.

Notes:

This story doesn't tie into Dragons and White Roses at all. It's just a small project I was working on. Also, I might start posting small one shots like this whenever I get stuck on Dragons and White Roses, like right now. However, I'm doing better with it and you should expect the next chapter soon.

Work Text:

This isn't happening

Ruby watches in stunned silence as Weiss walks towards her father's car, head hanging in submission and her hands limp at her sides. No. This was a dream. It couldn't be real. Weiss couldn't leave them. Leave her.

Weiss," Ruby calls out, but the white haired girl didn't seem to hear her. Ruby tries to run forward, but her feet are planted to the floor. "Weiss!"

Never before had she felt so helpless. Tears streaming down her face, she watches her princess walk into the clutches of a man who has left more scars on Weiss than the one crossing over her pale blue eye.

Ruby fights harder, able to shuffle forward a couple of inches, but whatever is keeping her mounted to the floor increases it's hold, making it impossible to move forward any farther. Invisible hands start pulling her clock, her clothes pulling her away from the one person she wants to live the rest of her life with. The one person she's ever given her heart to.

"WEISS!"

The older girl stops, and Ruby's breath stops with her. Then, slowly, Weiss turns around, and the way those pale blue eyes look at Ruby nearly breaks her heart. Those eyes were broken, defeated. It was enough to make Ruby break down and cry. Weiss watches, grief written all over her face. then, with a single tear falling down her cheek, she turns away from Ruby and continues walking

Ruby Jolts awake, her breathing ragged and tears flowing down her cheeks. Next to her in the bed they shared, Weiss' eyes snap open at Ruby's sudden movements. Looking over in confusion, she immediately notices Ruby's puffy eyes, wet cheeks, and uncontrollable trembling. She reaches out a hesitant hand towards the younger girl. "Ruby?"

The crimsonette's head whips around at the sound of her name and her silver eyes widen.

"Weiss..." she whispers, so softly that the white haired girl could barely hear it. Then, without warning, she dives forward and tackles Weiss back into the bed, burying her face into Weiss' shoulder and sobbing.

"Ruby! What's wrong, is everything okay?" Weiss is genuinely worried now. Never before has she seen the younger girl act like this. Something had definitely happened. Stroking her fingers through Ruby's hair, Weiss tries again. "Ruby, Are you okay?"

"Promise me," Ruby sobs. "Promise me that you won't abandon me." Her hands clench the pale blue nightgown that Weiss' wearing. "Promise me"

"Ruby, of course I'm not going to abandon you," Weiss says startled. "What is all of this about? Darling, what's wrong."

If Ruby was any calmer, she would have blushed at the nickname. But instead, she just pulls Weiss closer, looking up, silver meeting pale blue. Weiss shivers at the amount of desperation in Ruby's gaze. "Promise me, please."

Weiss shivers at the fact that strong willed, powerful Ruby Rose was practically begging her. So, ignoring the voice in her mind that says that this was a mistake, Weiss makes the promise in the best way she knew how. She pulls Ruby down on top of her and kisses her, her hands sliding into the red tipped locks and her body fitting perfectly against the other girl. Ruby gasps, her entire body freezing over. Then she melts into the kiss, her eyes sliding shut and practically pours her soul into the kiss. And so, with gentle hands and even gentler lips, Weiss makes her promise.

Years passed, with many more battles and challenges confronting our four heroines. Yet, despite everything that they go through, Weiss never wavered from her promise.

Now, seventy years later, Weiss Schnee-Rose visits the grave of her dead wife, staring down at a tombstone that reads, "Ruby Schnee-Rose, who always made an effort to save everyone."

Weiss looks up at the stars, a sad smile on her face as she slowly lies down next to the grave. She never did find out what happened the night that Weiss had made her promise. But by now, she didn't care. The only thing that mattered was that the little voice was wrong. How could have been a mistake when it helped them defeat Salem, raise Summer Schnee-Rose, their beautiful daughter, and live on to be happy and content with just each other. Not when it brought Weiss to use the family company to make life easier for so many Faunus, and certainly not when it had helped Weiss reconcile with her family.

So, with a soft smile on her face, Weiss decides to full-fill her promise one last time. She closes her eyes, and with her head next to the tombstone of the love of her life, she falls asleep for the last time, next to the grave of the girl that had changed her life, stolen her heart, and made her who she was today,

And now it was finally time to rejoin her once again.
