Chapter Text
Kyoka drops her head on top of Fumakage’s shoulder as the two make their way to class. She adores Momo, but the worst part of dating the class vice president is how Momo always makes Kyoka breakfast at 5 am. And how Momo then always manages to gently pressure Kyoka into heading to class ahead of her, while Momo stays behind to make sure everyone else wakes up.
Yes, it means that Kyoka always gets to class on time. But, honestly, at what cost?
As the classroom doorway comes into view Kyoka straightens up, stretching her arms above her head, and mumbles a thanks to Fumikage for half-carrying her to class 30 minutes before the school day begins. As usual, Fumikage just gives her a simple nod in response.
Fumikage enters the class ahead of her and, only to freeze in the doorway. The feathers around his neck puff up for a moment, then almost instantly smooth out again. He looks towards the ceiling.
“Why?” He breathes. Dark Shadow peaks over his shoulder, barking a laugh into Fumikage’s shoulder.
Kyoka squints in confusion, and pushes past him into the classroom.
The only student there before them is Bakugou. Which is pretty usual, as the other early risers (Momo, Koda, Midoriya, and Iida) usually stick behind at the dorms to force their other friends awake, and Aizawa is more often than not ten minutes late for class.
What isn’t usual is the two small children sitting with Bakugou.
Kyoka swears she can hear the sound of a record scratch out loud. Maybe it’s a previously unknown part of her quirk.
The kids appear to be a boy and a girl, both around preschool age if Kyoka were to guess. The boy’s settled on Bakugou’s lap, his head nestled under the blonde’s chin, while the girl sits on Bakugou’s desk. She takes up most of the space on it, sitting sideways so her pink legging clad legs dangle and kick off the edge of it. That leaves Bakugou with only half his desk to work with, though if he cares he surprisingly doesn't show it, hunched over a textbook he has to hold up to keep from falling off the desk.
The little girl keeps glancing up from the workbook in her lap to look at them, and waves occasionally. The little boy stares unabashedly, wide eyed behind his long wispy bangs. Bakugou’s eyes never stray from his textbook, though Kyoka knows he definitely knows they’re there and just doesn't feel like acknowledging the two baby elephants he brought into the room.
Kyoka stares at them for a long moment, waiting for someone to break the silence. The kids just continue to stare back at her. Eventually, she has to give in.
“Who are the kids?” Kyoka asks. Bakugou grunts, not looking up from his book.
“Haruki.” Bakugou gestures to the child on the desk, who pouts at the name. “Haruo.” He points to the kid on his lap, gaze still focused on his textbook.
Kyoka blinks, wondering if she assumed the children’s genders incorrectly. Haruki is usually a boy’s name, even if it was sometimes used for girls.
“Can I ask if you’re a girl or a boy? Or neither?” Kyoka asks, this time directed to Haruki. She doesn't want to scare Haruo, who was unsuccessfully trying to hide in Bakugou’s school jaket.
The child beams at her. “I’m a girl and I go by ‘she’, and Haru-nee’s a boy and he goes by ‘he’. I used to also go by ‘he’ but that was before everyone knew I was a girl. But sometimes people get confused because my hair is really short and Haru-nee’s is really long, so try not to get confused. Most people call me Ki and call Haru-nee Haru, but Katsu-nii told me not to tell anyone that because he doesn't want anyone getting familiar with us because he’s a big grump.”
Kyoka blinks at the massive amount of information. The little girl almost vibrates in place, like she’d been waiting for the chance to let the words escape her mouth. Bakugou sighs in frustration. It’s probably the tamest expression of irritation Kyoka’s ever seen from him.
“Ok then. I’ll call you Ki.” Kyoka nods, and makes her way over to her desk. She’s not the most comfortable around kids in general, and being ambushed with them first thing in the morning doesn't help. Fumikage sighs, and shakes his head at her.
Fumikage moves to take Kyoka’s abandoned spot, and offers a hand to Ki, crouching slightly to be on her level. Bakugou looks up from his textbook to glare, while Haruki giggles and takes Fumikage’s hand.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you both.” Fumakage says with a nod towards Haru. “I am Tokoyami Fumikage. I use he/him or they/them pronouns. My friend is Jirou Kyoka, who uses she/her pronouns.”
Ki giggles again, blushing slightly. “Hello. ‘S nice to meet you too.”
Fumikage smiles at her, and straightens up. He nods once at Bakugou, who is still staring back in hostile suspicion, and again at Haruo, before heading to his own desk and pulling out his phone.
Bakugou continues to glare at Fumikage for a moment, before focusing on his textbook again. Kyoka pulls out her own phone, content to simply watch whatever insanity was going to pass from a safe distance.
“Was that Ears and Birdbrain?” Ki asks Bakugou in a poorly disguised stage whisper.
“Yes.” Bakugou grunts. Kyoka muffles a snort.
They sit in relative silence for a while. Ki kicks her legs, antsy. Like she’s waiting for something, though Jirou has no clue what.
Sato and Shoji are the next to arrive to class. Ki waves to both of them, though surprisingly she doesn't say anything. Shoji barely blinks at the sight of the children sitting with Bakugou, instead beelining to Fumikage’s desk to start a hushed conversation. Sato sends a confused look over to Kyoka, but heads to his own desk when she just shrugs in response.
Ojiro and Hakagure show up a little while later. Ojiro freezes inside the doorway just like Fumikage did. Hakugare stalls next to him, rocking slightly from her sudden stop.
“Hey, Bakugou…?” Hakagure asks. “What’cha got there?”
“A math textbook.” Bakugou responds without missing a beat. Ki giggles loudly as Hagakure slumps. Hagakure seems to shake her head- though it's hard to tell- and heads to her seat, dragging Ojiro by the arm.
It’s quiet for another few minutes. Kyoka is so lost in her thoughts, she almost misses it when Bakugou leans down to whisper in Ki’s ear.
“Remember that you can talk first, alright?” Bakugou murmurs, a lot softer than Kyoka thought he was capable of.
Ki blows out a huff of air. “I keep forgetting.” She mumbles back.
Kyoka frowns. She feels bad eavesdropping, even if she usually can’t help it, but that interaction was odd. Who forgets that they can be the first to talk in a conversation? Why would Bakugou need to remind a five year old she’s allowed to talk to people?
Kyoka’s distracted from her questions by noise from outside the class. The loud voices of Mina and Denki float into the room, signaling the approach of the ‘Bakusquad’.
Eijirou is the first in, Mina, Denki, Hanata and Momo following behind him. Kyoka has a clear view of Ejirou’s expression, so she can literally see the smile melt off his face, into a slack-jawed gape of confusion.
Bakugou exhales through his nose, his frustration loud enough to be heard. He knows better than anyone that the arrival of his friends has brought the end to any chance of quiet he might have had before.
“What…?” Eijirou breathes. Momo tilts her head in confusion next to him, while Mina goes wide eyed in suppressed excitement.
Ki grins at the new arrivals. “Hi!” She waves cheerfully. Haru pokes his head out from where he’s hiding in Bakugou’s jacket.
“Hello…?” Momo mumbles, offering a small wave of her own in return.
“Dude...” Denki turns to Bakugou. “Where did you get the kids?”
Ki’s previously innocent grin sharpens into something vaguely off putting, though still adorable.
“Katsu-nii kidnapped us for the day!” She tells them sweetly. “He promised us ice cream if we came with him.”
“What?!” Eijirou splutters. “You can’t just steal kids off the street!” He yells at Bakugou, before whirling on Ki. “And you can’t just take promises of ice cream from strangers!”
Ki pouts. “But he said we could get any toppings we wanted.”
“That doesn't- oh my freaking god-”
“Would you shut it?” Bakugou growls. “I didn’t fucking steal them. Little shits are my boyfriend's kids.”
Everyone in the room freezes.
“What?!” Kyoka jerks up to attention, clearly eavesdropping at this point.
“How is your boyfriend old enough to have kids?!” Eijirou shrieks.
Sero shakes his head. “Bakubro, that’s really not cool.”
“I’ll disintegrate him.” Mina mumbles darkly, all traces of her previous excitement gone.
“I’ll help.” Denki says, cracking his knuckles.
“Bakugou, if you are in a relationship with an adult that is really not healthy.” Momo says. “If you need help to leave such a situation I’d be more than happy to assist in any way I can.”
Ki blinks at all of them in wide-eyed confusion. Haru buries himself deeper into Bakugou’s jacket. Bakugou practically growls, and pinches the bridge of his nose. A vein bulges on his forehead, probably because he’s clenching his jaw tight enough to grind glass back into sand.
“Listen up, dumbasses, because I’m not going to repeat this.” Bakugou forces out. “My boyfriend is 16, just like the rest of us. He’s like three fucking months younger than me. The kids aren’t biologically his, they’re his siblings. We call them his kids because their parents are deadbeats who haven’t called or sent money in two fucking years and haven’t even set foot in the country for nearly five.”
Everyone’s silent.
“Oh… sorry.” Ejirou says sheepishly.
Momo ducks her head. “I apologize as well. I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions.”
Bakugou grunts, which is basically the same as saying ‘apology accepted’ with him.
“I don’t get it…? Why was everyone upset?” Ki asks, previous attempts at a practical joke forgotten.
“Don’t worry about it.” Bakugou grunts, shifting Haru on his lap. The little boy blinks at Eijirou with wide eyes. Ejirou smiles back, but Haru ducks behind his long purple hair in response.
“Oh.. ok…” Ki agrees, nose scrunched up in obvious confusion.
“Well, anyway!” Mina crouches in front of Bakugou’s desk so she can address both kids, clearly trying to distract them. “I’m Mina! What’re your names?”
“Don’t tell her.” Bakugou cuts Ki off. Kyoka snorts.
“Rude.” Mina pouts.
Ki squints at Mina. “Are you Pink Cheeks or Raccoon Eyes?”
Bakugou barks out a laugh. Mina deflates.
“Bakubro is such a bad influence…” Denki sighs.
“That’s Raccoon Eyes.” Bakugou tells Ki.
Ki nods in affirmation. Kyoka wonders exactly how much info this kid has on them.
“Why don’t you want us to talk to them?” Ki asks Bakugou.
Bakugou sighs, long-suffering. “Because they’re annoying.”
“Oh, ok then!” Ki agrees cheerfully. She then immediately turns back to Mina with a wide grin.
“I’m Haruki! But you can call me Ki or Ki-chan, ‘cus my brother is Haruo and we call him Haru because just ‘O’ sounds stupid and otherwise it gets confusing. Just so you know I’ma girl and he’s a boy. Some people get us confused because we’re twins and I have short hair even though I’ma girl and Haru-nee has long hair even though he’s a boy, so please try to remember which of us is which.” Ki rambles off her introduction. The wide grin on her face makes it pretty clear she’s enjoying purposely going against Bakugou’s wishes.
“Aww, you're so cuteeee!” Mina squeals.
“She’s a little shit is what she is.” Bakugou huffs.
Momo gasps. “Bakugou, you can't swear around small children!”
“Yes I can.”
“Dude, no.” Eijirou groans.
“Hito-nii says he doesn’t care what we say or hear as long as we don’t say swears in front of other kids and don’t hear anything racist or sexual.” Ki recites, like it’s a speech she’s memorized.
Sero blinks at her. “That’s… specific.”
“Is Hito-nii your brother?” Denki asks. Ki nods, smiling almost proudly.
“Well, whatever.” Mina huffs, turning to Bakugou. “Ki-chan is an absolute angel and you can’t say that kind of stuff about her!”
Ki smiles brightly. Bakugou mutters something under his breath about manipulative little brats.
Momo clears her throat. “Not to be rude, but why are Ki-chan and Haru-san here and not at their own school?”.
Bakugou tenses, and Ki’s expression falls. She suddenly seems to find the garish green bracelet on her wrist very interesting. It’s hard to tell, but it seems like Haru hides his face in Bakugou’s chest.
“They’re between daycares right now.” Bakugou grunts. Kyoka can practically feel his discomfort.
“Ah… ok. So are you watching them until they get into another daycare?” Ejirou asks, clearly trying to sidestep whatever has caused the weird mood.
“Oooo, if they’re between daycares are you gonna bring them everyday?!” Mina beams with excitement, bouncing on the balls of her feet.
Bakugo snorts. “No, don’t be fucking stupid. Hito’s been taking them to work until we can get them in a new daycare. It was already hard as fuck to get permission just to bring them in today.”
Mina pouts.
“Wait…” Denki frowns, “If your boyfriend usually watches them, why couldn’t he watch them today?”
Bakugou scowls. “He was busy.”
“Katsu-nii locked Hito-nii in his bedroom.”
Silence.
“Dude, what ?” Ejirou asks.
“That’s not legal.” Sero deadpans.
Bakugo shrugs. “Dumbass was sick and refused to take the day off. So I made him.”
“Aww.” Mina coos. “Who knew Bakugo had such a soft side?”
Bakugo huffs. “I’m not soft.”
Momo hums. “Not really but you’re quite… sweet I suppose is the best word. I wouldn’t have expected it from you.”
Bakugo rolls his eyes, then stops as if he’s listening to something they can’t hear, and curses softly under his breath
“Ki budge over, I need to do your brother’s hair.” Bakugou sighs, dropping his textbook to the floor.
Bakugou positions his hands down by his sides and rolls his wrists. Kyoka realizes what he’s going to do right before he does it, barely enough warning to cover her sensitive ears. Bakugou lets off a small series of explosions, something Ejirou explained to her a while back was to clear the nitroglycerin from his hands.
Surprisingly neither kid flinches. In fact, they seem used to it.
Ki scooches over slightly and Bakugou lifts Haru from his lap so that the boy is sitting cross-legged on the desk instead, his back facing Bakugou. Haru blushes deeply when he notices everyone’s eyes on him, and ducks behind his fringe as best he can.
Ki takes hold of Haru’s hand and pauses, similar to how Bakugou did before. She turns a smug grin on Bakugou.
“Haru-nee wants you to braid some flowers into his hair.”
Bakugou scoffs, already started on sectioning off part of the kid’s hair.
“Haru wants flowers in his hair, or you want flowers in his hair?” Bakugou’s movements are smooth and sure, as if he’s done this a thousand times before. He makes a point to avoid the shorter sections from the front of Haru’s hair as he pulls the rest of it into a loose ponytail.
Ki crosses her arms, blowing a lock of her own deep purple hair from her face. The color matches her twin’s exactly, though her hair seems more curly than wavy like his. Though maybe it’s just the length, considering how the uneven ends of Haru’s hair curl upwards at the ends.
“My hair is too short!” Ki cries. “And Haru-nee says he doesn't mind. Can’t I go get some from outside? Please? He’ll look so pretty!”
“No.”
“Katsu-niiiiii.” Ki whines.
“You’re not going outside on your own.”
The rest of the group watches on in confusion, like a game of tennis they don’t know the rules of. Kyoka finds even herself a bit lost, even though she’s not technically a part of the conversation.
“Oh!” Momo gasps, snapping her fingers. “Does Haru-san have a telepathy quirk?”
Ki turns to her and blinks with wide eyes, distracted from her conversation.
“How did you guess?!”
Momo blushes. “Ah, well. You said that you spoke to him, but we obviously didn’t hear anything, and both you and Bakgou seemed to very purposely make physical contact with him before, so…”
Ki squints at her, somewhere between amazed and suspicious.
“Are you sure? You didn’t cheat, did you?”
Momo hides her smile. “I’m pretty sure I didn’t cheat.”
“So if he’s got telepathy, what’s your quirk?” Sero asks Ki.
“Clair-voy-ance.” She takes great care to sound the word out correctly. ”But Hito-nii thinks that we’ll both be able to do more soon, ‘cus me and Haru are twins so our quirks should be the same. And also sometimes I can feel other people’s emotions but I’m just not very good at it, and Haru-nee’s never lost a game of rock-paper-scissors or a coin toss in his life. We even tested it, but he didn’t guess perfect when we rolled dice like I did so Izu-nii thinks we might have the same quirk but it’s just starting out different, but then it’ll be more same-y soon.”
“Izu-nii…” Mina mumbles questioningly. “Why do I recognize that name…”
Momo hums. “A combination clairvoyance, empathy and telepathy quirk would be very powerful.”
Ki nods enthusiastically. “Me and Haru-nee are gonna be a hero team when we get bigger! Right Haru?”
She turns to her brother, leaning into him because of the awkward angel. Haru gives a small nod, his shy smile now visible since most of his hair is pulled back
Denki grins. “Ahh, really little dudes? Lit!”
He holds out his hand for a high five. Haru’s face flushes, and he hides in his sister’s back.
Ki’s whole expression darkens. “Haru-nee doesn't like touching people. Please leave him alone.”
“Ahh, no problem little dude!” Denki says, backing off. “But if you do want a high five I promise I don’t bite.”
Bakugou snorts. “If you try to touch him you’ll get bit.”
Denki blinks. “He bites?”
Ki smiles sweetly. “No, I do.”
Everyone blinks at her. Bakugou smirks. Denki backs away slowly.
“How long have you known these kids again?” Sero asks Bakugou.
“Since they were born.”
Sero nods. “And how often do you see them?”
“We see Katsu-nii every day!” Ki answers for him.
“That…. makes sense…” Sero nods again.
“Wait, how do you see them everyday?” Ejirou asks. “We live in dorms.”
Bakugou scowls. “None of your business.”
Ki grins mischievously, expression flipping like a light switch. “Katsu-nii comes by every morning! Sometimes he brings Izu-nii nee but Izu-nii doesn’t come every day like Katsu-nii. And Katsu-nii always makes us breakfast and helps Hito-nii get us ready for school. Except for today because Hito-nii was sick so instead he locked Hito-nii in his bedroom and took us to school with him.”
It takes everyone a moment to process all the information Ki just dropped on them.
Sero turns to Bakugou. “I think that might still legally be considered kidnapping.”
“It’s not like I’m not gonna bring them back.” Bakugou grumbles.
“That’s still kidnapping!” Eijirou groans.
Bakugo starts to respond but is cut off by the sound of the door opening. Iida marches in, ranting about needing to get to class on time, Todoroki and Midoriya stumbling behind him in a half-dead state. Uraraka and Tsuyu follow close behind, the former leaning heavily on the latter.
“Izu-nii!” Ki shrieks. She jumps down and runs over to hug Midorya’s legs, making him stumble back slightly. Todoroki jumps at the movement, staring at the girl with wide eyes. Uraraka and Tsuyu notice her as well, but seem a bit too tired to react with anything more than a blank stare and a confused head tilt respectively.
“Ki….?” Midorya blinks down at her sleepily. After a moment he seems to snap out of it, reaching down to pick her up and settle her on his hip all in one smooth movement, before walking over to Bakugou.
“Why are Ki and Haru here? Is Hichan ok?” Midorya asks Bakugou.
“Hichan?” Todoroki mutters jealousy. Uraraka pats his back in sympathy.
Bakugou rolls his eyes. “Dumbass is just sick ‘cus he doesn't take care of himself.” He huffs. “I'm heading back after school to take care of him. Hopefully if he gets some actual fucking sleep he’ll be fine by tommorow.”
Midorya hums, considering. Kyoka is kinda weirded out. She knew they had a weird friendship, but now instead of sarcastic barbs being thrown back and forth like a game of badminton, the two are just casually discussing why Bakugou brought two five year olds to school.
“Izuku, who are these children and why are they here?” Iida asks, causing Midorya to jump.
Ki frowns. “We’re here with Izu-nii and Katsu-nii. Are you dumb?”
Bakugou bursts into laughter while Midorya splutters apologies. He seems much more flustered by Ki’s rudeness than the girl herself does.
Iida sighs, rubbing at his eyes. “I believe that you’re here with Bakugo-san.” He tells her. Ki giggles.
“I’m so sorry Tenya!” Midorya exclaims, setting Ki back on the desk. “They’re the younger siblings of a close friend who’s sick. There’s no one else to take care of them so Kacchan brought them to school today. But I’m sure he got permission! Right?” He turns to Bakugou.
Bakugou snorts. “The school’s covered in sensors. How the fuck do you think they got in?”
“Knowing you I think you're completely able to break them into UA.” Iida sighs.
Ki giggles.“The big teddy bear let us in.” Haru nods next to her, expression set as if this information was deadly serious.
Midorya raises an eyebrow at Bakugou. “Principle Nezu gave you permission?”
Bakugou shrugs. “I called in a fucking favor with All Might. Can you chill?”
“I wish.” Midorya mumbles.
“Wait, since when does All Might give you favors?” Mina asks Bakugou.
Bakugou scowls, but the door opens before he can respond. Everyone scrambles to return to their seats, as Aizawa stumbles into class in his perpetually exhausted state.
When he reaches his desk he turns to face the class, face blank. Aizawa blinks at the children situated on Bakugou's desk. Haru and Ki blink back at him in unison. Aizawa silently turns back to his desk and pulls out his sleeping bag.
“I suppose we have another study period.” Momo sighs, as their teacher curls up under his desk.
Uraraka, starting to wake up, turns to Midorya. “So are these Hichan’s kids?”
“Yep!” Midorya says brightly.
“Ahh, I should have put that together.” Iida mumbles.
“I’m pretty sure Deku-chan already mentioned him by name.” Tsuyu says.
Iida frowns. “I was distracted.”
“Wait, you guys know Bakugou’s BF?” Mina gasps. “What’s he like?!”
“Well, we more know of him than actually know him.” Uraraka says. “Deku mentions him sometimes when he goes to visit, but we’ve never met him.”
“So we don’t really know much about him either, kero.” Tsuyu says.
Everyone turns to stare at Midoriya and Bakugou, the former staring back stoically, while the latter failed to mask his panic.
“So, Midorya,” Sero grins, “What’s Bakubro’s BF like?”
Midorya pales, his eyes going wide. “Uh.”
“Deku.” Bakugou calls, surprisingly calm. “Say anything, and you die.”
Midorya points at Bakugou. “I can’t say anything I’ll die.”
Despite the fact that he’s discussing his own hypothetical death, Midorya seems almost comforted by the threat.
“Aw, c’mon dude!” Kirishima complains to Bakugou. “Will you at least tell us what he looks like?”
“No.”
Mina groans, burying her head in her hands. After a moment she looks up, a devilish glint in her eyes, and turns in her seat to face Bakugou’s desk.
“Ki-chan, what does your brother look like?”
Ki scrunches up her nose. “Why should I tell you?”
“Because it’ll upset Bakugou?” Kirishima offers. The little girl considers for a moment, before shaking her head.
“He’ll get more upset at you annoying him. So I’m not gonna say anything .” Ki declares, resolute.
Everyone is quiet for a moment.
Fumikage turns to face Bakugou, apparently not as engrossed in his phone as Kyoka though he was.
“Bakugou, bringing these two here was the best thing you have ever done for any of us.” Fumikage says, maintaining piercing eye contact, a hand over his heart. “Thank you.”
“Why?” Shoji sighs, half at Fumikage and half at the world at large.
“This one is a little demon and I love her.” Fumikage announces, pointing at Ki. The little girl beams in response.
