A Dream That Flies Away

Summary:

Yoongi was not supposed to be an Omega.

So when Jungkook presents as an Alpha, everything goes to shit.

Notes:

Lmaoooo, the first fic I write in literally five years and it's BTS and SugaKookie AND A/B/O I can't believe myself rn.

Some important things to note: in this 'verse, Alphas present around 16-18, and Omegas around 19-22. Betas don't really "present". I'm also going with their Korean ages just to keep things consistent.

Please go easy on me, it's been a while since I've written anything, let alone (what's looking to be) multi-chaptered fic.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: You Don’t Have Me, But I’m Filled with You

Chapter Text

Min Yoongi was not supposed to be an Omega.

Before their debut, everyone had assumed he was a Beta. He can step up and be a leader, but he doesn’t have that certain “quality” that all Alphas seem to have – he doesn’t have Namjoon’s natural leadership skills, or Hoseok’s when he goes into “dance captain” mode. He’s not like Taehyung, who’s playfully charming and naturally draws people like a moth to a flame. He’s not like Jin hyung, who’s nurturing by nature – maybe it’s because he’s an Omega, or maybe it’s just because he’s the eldest hyung, and someone needs to look out for them. He’s not even like Jimin, a Beta like him. Jimin’s personality is – for want of a better word – soothing. He knows exactly how to comfort someone when they need it, and his genuinely golden heart makes it easy for everyone to like him.

Yoongi isn’t like that.

He’s quiet, and he’s not exactly good at expressing his feelings – especially when it counts. He cares, but it doesn’t always show as obviously. He isn’t always as willing to throw his arms around someone and hug them, like Jimin or Jin hyung or Taehyung might.

Yoongi hadn’t had any idea how he’d present. But then sixteen, seventeen, eighteen pass him by, and nothing changes. By the time they debut, he’s turned twenty-one, and he’s certain he’s a Beta. The only one left to present is Jungkook, and they all pegged him for an Alpha from the start. Their group would be a little imbalanced, but it wouldn’t be anything dramatic.

It’s only when Jungkook actually presents as an Alpha that everything goes to shit.

It starts out as a normal day. It’s been a year since their debut, and they’re preparing for another comeback. It feels like they’ve been dancing for days not hours. Taehyung is sprawled out on the floor, panting. Jin hyung and Jimin are sitting side by side, leaning against the wall and looking at something on Jimin’s phone. Namjoon is gulping down water like it’s the last time he’ll ever drink it. Hoseok is the only one still standing, facing the long mirror. He’s still going through the moves, though they’re lacking in as much power as when they’d first started.

Jungkook is sitting next to Yoongi with their shoulders almost pressed together. They’re not speaking – Jungkook is playing some inane game on his phone and Yoongi has his earphones plugged in. He’s re-listening to a track he’s been working on, trying to work out why part of the tune is bothering him.

He’s so focused that he doesn’t notice how fidgety Jungkook is at his side.

Jungkook’s been unusually restless all morning, but Yoongi had chalked it up to stress before the comeback. They’ve all been a little more on edge than normal, with only a few days before they have to begin shooting. Even Hoseok’s usual cheery personality has been more subdued than usual.

Jungkook suddenly convulses at his side, and Yoongi pulls out his earphones, turning to him with a frown. It’s then that the smell reaches his nose.

Jungkook’s phone has slipped from his fingers and he’s doubled over, breathing heavily. Yoongi goes to put a hand on his shoulder and Namjoon says, “Wait.”

That's when Yoongi properly registers the smell as Alpha pheromones – Betas have a weaker sense of smell than Alphas or Omegas, but it’s unmistakable now, permeating the room heavily.

“He’s presenting as an Alpha,” Hoseok says, frowning.

Namjoon moves towards Jin hyung before anyone else can say anything. Their only Omega is hunched over slightly, his forearm covering his nose and mouth. Namjoon helps him to his feet and turns to Jimin.

“Jiminie, take Jin hyung out of here,” he says, voice steady and authoritative. Jin hyung looks a little unsteady on his feet, so Jimin quickly wraps an arm around his waist as he ushers their eldest out of the practice room.

“It should be over soon, right?” Taehyung asks. He’s sitting upright now, watching Jungkook carefully.

Namjoon looks a little more relaxed now that Jin hyung is safely out of the way. He nods in response to Taehyung’s question. “Just stay calm, Jungkook,” he tells their maknae quietly.

Jungkook shakes his head, still hunched over. Yoongi scoots back slightly to give him space, and that’s when it hits him.

It’s like the air has been punched out of his lungs. The heat that spreads across his skin is unbearable, and he lets out an inadvertent sound, wrapping his arms around himself. The smell of Alpha is suddenly overwhelming, but Jungkook—

Jungkook’s scent is intoxicating.

Yoongi shifts slightly and lets out another cry – slick is already trickling down his thighs. He can feel himself flushing, and wonders somewhere in the back of his mind how Jin hyung does this every single month.

“Hyung?” Hoseok asks. He sounds concerned, but his voice is weirdly distant. “Namjoon, Jungkook’s still presenting, you don’t think…”

The only thing Yoongi can really focus on is Jungkook, Jungkook who is so close and smells so good

There’s the sound of footsteps and Jungkook growls. Namjoon’s voice is cautious. “Jungkook, you need to get away from Yoongi hyung.”

“No,” their maknae snaps, and Yoongi shivers in response to his voice. Sweat is starting to bead at his hairline and he can’t stand how Jungkook is so close but not close enough—

“Jungkook-ah,” he whimpers. He wants to move back to Jungkook’s side, but his legs feel like jelly.

“Taehyung, help me get Jungkook out of here, now,” Namjoon says. “Hoseok, go find Jin hyung and bring him back here after we’ve left.”

Jungkook growls again at that, and there’s a flurry of noise. He looks up to see Taehyung and Namjoon holding a struggling Jungkook.

“Let me go,” he demands as the other two Alphas pull him towards the door.

“I can’t let you do that,” Namjoon answers. He looks like he’s having a hard time himself. Taehyung’s breathing heavily through his mouth – he’d only presented as an Alpha a few months back, and he’s still learning self-control – as he hauls Jungkook along.

“I can help him,” Jungkook insists.

Yoongi whines as Jungkook moves further away. “Namjoon, just let him,” he manages. He hates himself for how needy he sounds.

“No, hyung,” Namjoon replies. “I’m sorry. Jin hyung will be here soon, okay?”

They’re out of the room before Yoongi can reply. Jungkook’s heady scent still lingers in the room and Yoongi kind of wants to cry. He can feel more slick dripping down his thighs, and his clothes are starting to feel suffocating.

Jungkook – out of all the people it could possibly be, it’s their maknae. In the space of twenty minutes, his life has been turned on its head. And Yoongi hates himself because the only thing he can think about is how much he wants Jungkook to come back here and—

He cuts the thought off before he can finish it.

He doesn’t know how much time passes, but suddenly Jin hyung is kneeling down beside him. He’s still got two spots of colour high on his cheeks, but he easily helps Yoongi to his feet. When Yoongi catches a glimpse of himself in the mirror, it startles him – he’s more flushed than he’s ever seen himself. His hair is dishevelled and his clothes are damp with sweat. Jin hyung is basically supporting all his weight – his legs are so shaky that it’s difficult to walk.

“It’ll be alright, Yoongi-ah,” Jin hyung says soothingly. Yoongi’s not sure that he believes him.
