Summary
“I really thought I damned you to death with that hat,” Arthur said after a while, breathless. The confession seemed to cut through the air, like he shouted it instead of the quiet thing it really was. Charles reached across the gap between them and lifted the hat from its dusty resting place, gentle as anything, and held it, examining it. Maybe to see if it was as dangerous as Arthur implied it was, some hidden snake venom or live wire stitched into the hem.
“Give me some credit,” Charles said, looking up at Arthur with a soft smile, “I’m not dead yet.”
On a sweltering hot summer's day, Arthur and Charles run into an old enemy while (unsuccessfully) hunting. They engage in fleeing from certain doom, only to find themselves a little closer than either could have anticipated.

Summary
Charles is a giggly drunk. Arthur’s come to find that out as time goes on, and has come to understand this as the reason he rarely drinks much, even when the gang has a reason to drink. Well, the gang hardly ever has a good reason to drink, but they’d come up with one all the same.
Sean coming home was as good a reason as any to carry the crate of beer out of the provisions wagon and take a round.

Summary
It's been weeks since Arthur escaped the O'Driscolls, but he still can't sleep. Not without Charles nearby. Charles is going crazy. He can't bear being in love with his friend. Not when Arthur is in so plainly in love with this Mary woman. The confession could ruin their friendship. Or maybe not...
“You’re leaving?”
Takes a moment for Charles to look up from fiddling needlessly with Taima’s reins. To face Arthur. And speak. “Yeah.”
“You can’t.”
“Arthur.” He says it with a sigh. “You knew I was gonna leave eventually.”
“But I—” I need you, he almost says. “I thought you was taking me with you.”
Charles looks at him so fondly. “I can’t—"
“Was you gonna say goodbye at least?” Arthur knows he sounds more wounded than angry. And he supposes he is.
