Summary
From the moment his cries pierced the air, Nikolai Lantsov was a force of nature.
He would grow to be a prince, a king, and a demon, all in due turn. He would love and lose and love again, his nation, his friends, his body and his mind. He would wear his duty with grace and serve his first love, Ravka, with a smile.
But first he was small, boyish, a child clearly out of place in his surroundings. He knew not what it was to bear the weight of a crown on his brow. He could not understand that no great love waited for him, at least not within his marriage.
He would grow to learn these things, for Nikolai Lantsov was a boy with a future.
(Or: Nikolai Lantsov will not marry for love. That doesn't mean he won't try.)

Summary
Nikolai couldn’t shroud a room in darkness like the Darkling. He couldn’t create that black abyss out of nothing. What he could do, however, was control the shadows. Not the darkness. Not in the pitch black. But give him the slightest bit of light, and he could pull them right from where they lay.
He would stand in the sun for hours, stealing his own shadow and letting the tendrils of black smoke twist and dance around his fingers. Nikolai reveled in the way the other Grisha looked at him fearfully as he walked along the grounds in the midday sun, without a shadow.
In his isolation from his peers, they became his only friend.
There were days when he startled awake from the pain of his own claws digging into his skin. When he woke up with the feeling of falling stuck in his mind. Days where no matter how hard he stared at his books, he couldn’t decipher the words. On those days, his shadows were his only source of comfort. He’d close off the room to all light except a single candle and pull every shadow to form a warm cocoon of darkness around himself. It was there he felt safest.

Summary
Jon wasn’t anything special. He was an ordinary researcher at Bright Eye Watchmen, Inc.; not terribly skilled at his job, and certainly not very likeable, but ordinary. He could be a bit too dedicated to unearthing the truth, at least if you listened to what Tim had to say about it, but Jon tried not to make a habit of doing that.
When Jon catches the attention of Elias Bouchard, head of the local research institute, he finds himself wishing he’d listened to Tim just a little more.
*
Bark-brown, leathery wings pulled away from the creature’s torso, briefly revealing six limbs clinging tightly to the tree trunk above. The eyes that stared down at the man were backlit by a deep, bloody red, except for the pupils. Those were white. Blank, wide, white orbs that watched him.
“What are you?” he whispered.
Jon didn’t know.
