Summary
Daniel remembers his romantic past with Armand when he is turned into a vampire. Armand might be a monster, but to Daniel there is no difference between monster and angel, not when it comes to Armand.
The quiet rhythm of Armand’s blood pumping and the cadence of his heart pounds in Daniel’s head like a lullaby as they soar higher and higher together. Daniel's eyes blow wide open because he has never noticed Armand’s magnificent wings before. He wonders where they have been hiding this entire time. He counts four black feathered wings, beautiful in all their glory as they create a whirlwind of movement. The Angel whispers incantations as old as time immemorial. The landscape around them bends and sways as the words leave his lips.
"Have the gates of death been disclosed to you? Have you seen the gates of deep darkness?” Armand wraps him in ancient scripture and everything about this feels both gentle and ravenous. The Angel’s hair dances with the movement of their flight, the long tresses creating a halo around his face. Wind whips around them as the Angel takes them higher, to a different plane, and Daniel marvels at his surroundings.

Idly, his hand started pressing. Pushing down, down, down as if he could physically force the hunger away. His body molded to the bottom of the coffin as he crushed his abdomen.
His breath caught.
Amadeo turned sharply to his side, gagging as he released the pressure on his stomach. Saliva dripped down his face as he heaved. He wrapped his arms lightly around his middle, resting his head against the cold bed.
This didn’t feel like love.

Amadeo was still regarding the superior imitation of himself that Marius’ brush had brought to life. Was righteousness even possible for him? For someone who had whored and killed and lied?
He was certain the boy in the portrait needn’t worry over such things. He was young and pure. He wasn’t hungry.

"Time is a merciful lover. I shall enjoy watching you fail in your endeavors to deny yourself the truth. Remember this resentment, Daniel Molloy. See how fast it will get snuffed out before there's nothing left for you to use as a curtain of excuse." The words were spoken heatedly against his left ear as his jaw was cradled in a mockery of tenderness.
"My fledgling. My undoing. How long will you last?"
