Summary
One of Jack Merridew's most closely guarded secrets is his complicated friendship with Simon Cambourne.
When he stumbles upon Simon's diary, he's afraid of what others might see if they read it.
But there's no one more afraid of what's written in the diary than Jack himself.
Because the diary is proof of everything- his sins, his complicated feelings for Simon, and the vulnerability that he's fought so hard to conceal from everyone else.

Summary
There is a ghost on the other end of the pew, and it is looking directly at him.
Jack is the beast from the island, he realises, horrified, they never killed it, they killed Simon, he killed Simon. And he killed Jack too, and now he’s a beast, standing somewhere that it does not belong, wearing a choir robe, a pair of school shoes and the stolen skin of a twelve year old boy.
He smiles for the choirmaster anyway, because he’s a creature, who’d end the world to hear the last man alive tell him he’s a good boy.
Or: Starting a violent tribe on an island doesn't exempt you from having to go back to school after the fact, it only means the one person who has ever understood you completely isn't there with you anymore. But maybe there are ways to heal.

Summary
absolution · formal release from guilt, obligation, or punishment
or:
Simon didn’t die a martyr. Somewhere, in the back of his mind, Ralph knows this, and knows that this is not a revelation but rather a quiet truth, one that can only be understood by children with heavy weights chained to their hands, dangling on a cross for no one's sins but their own.
Simon didn’t die alone, but he might as well have. Is humanity worth salvation, when Simon’s death had been paraded, a sick, boisterous cavalcade not in his honor but for the sake of his death itself?

“Simon, what are you-”
He was cut off by the vivid boy pushing himself up to meet his gaze and gripping his hands weakly.
“Promise you’ll stay?”
