Tommi’s hands start to shake and he quickly puts the mug on the table. ‘For some reason I get very nervous when I’m in your house,’ he explains.
‘Oh, no worries! We are more than happy to mingle with people from all social classes,’ Joel says softly. Olli and Tommi look at each other and Aleksi laughs nervously. ‘What Joel means is that we love to have you here and please make yourself at home,’ he rephrases, hoping to save face.
Joel invites Tommi and Olli for coffee and makes a lasting impression.

‘Niko knew Joel didn’t like him much.
That was okay. They rarely saw each other, as Joel was the son of their leader, and had many important duties, and Niko was a member of the congregation, just one face among many. The only reason he was ever in the same orbit as Joel was their mutual friendship with Joonas, Olli, and Tommi, and that was fine by the both of them. They exchanged the required pleasantries, but other than that, never spoke to each other. Whenever Niko caught the lingering looks Joel gave him, they always seemed to prick him, haughty derision in Joel’s eyes, and he’d never desired any more contact with him.‘

He sighs, irritated but figuring there’s not much to do but go along with what he’s gotten into at this point.

Joel’s eyebrows shoot up when he registers he’s looking at cherry-red high-heeled pumps. Aleksi’s not seeing any woman that he knows of, he’s not even sure if Aleksi swings both ways but it wouldn’t surprise him. But then he remembers an off-hand comment Aleksi had made when discussing today’s rendez-vous, about the industry party where he’d reconnected with an ex who was into shoes.
Joel and Aleksi have developed some kind of relationship, but Joel hasn't been able to get past certain hurdles. Aleksi shows him a good example.
